This showy fritillary visited at suppertime the other night. She may have been the biggest Great spangled frit I've ever seen - a good 5-6" across with her wings spread wide. Definitely bigger than the few that visit in Spring. These are much more common in late summer & fall as they expand southward to us. We're at the southern-most edge of their range or below it - but I have seen them breed here. Much more common north of us in the mountains, while I've never seen one at our nature center about 15 miles south of us.

Gas Works Park in Seattle, Washington is a 19.1 acre (77,000 m²) public park on the site of the former Seattle Gas Light Company gasification plant, located on the north shore of Lake Union at the south end of the Wallingford neighborhood. Gas Works park contains remnants of the sole remaining coal gasification plant in the US. The plant operated from 1906 to 1956, and was bought by the City of Seattle for park purposes in 1962. The park opened to the public in 1975. (Source - Wikipedia)

The photo reminds me somewhat of the most expensive photograph ever sold - Rhein II by by the German visual artist Andreas Gursky. ;-)
Not to put too fine a point on it. :o)
My second entry for the Macro Mondays group theme for the week of 7 May 2012: "water play". The first one is in the first comment below. Like that one, these were naturally occurring drops after a spring rain – in this case, the weight of which bent the reed down right to the perfect angle. These reeds are Equisetum spp (I believe it's Equisetum giganteum) – we call them "horsetails" around here.
Happy Macro Monday everyone!

Pindus mountains, Thessaly, Central Greece.
The Pindus Mountains form the principal range and backbone of mainland Greece, trending north-northwest–south-southeast from Albania to central Greece north of the Peloponnese. The highest point of the range is 8,651 feet (2,637 metres) in the Smólikas massif, near the Albanian border. Forested with oak, fir, beech, and pine, the Pindus creates a barrier for the westerly weather fronts, which puts the Thessalian plain to the east in a rain shadow. The mountains, snowcapped in winter, receive heavy rainfall that feeds such rivers as the Achelous and Mégdhova on the western slopes and the Pineiós and Aliákmon on the eastern.

I thought these clouds were quite interesting. It looks like a wave pattern. I liked the reflected light on the sea too.

The second day of our BootCamp photoscursion led Micah and I to Mono Lake just outside Lee Vining, Ca. It was the first time I have gotten ANY color at the lake, and I tried to take full advantage. I really do love the Eastern Sierras. I already can't wait to get back. Cheers and happy shooting everyone. -Jared R.
Miami is a seaport city at the southeastern corner of the U.S. state of Florida and its Atlantic coast. As the seat of Miami-Dade County, the municipality is the principal, central, and the most populous city of the Miami metropolitan area and part of the second-most populous metropolis in the southeastern United States.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Miami's metro area is the eighth-most populous and fourth-largest urban area in the U.S., with a population of around 5.5 million.
Miami is a major center, and a leader in finance, commerce, culture, media, entertainment, the arts, and international trade. In 2010, Miami ranked seventh in the United States in terms of finance, commerce, culture, entertainment, fashion, education, and other sectors. It ranked 33rd among global cities. In 2008, Forbes magazine ranked Miami "America's Cleanest City", for its year-round good air quality, vast green spaces, clean drinking water, clean streets, and citywide recycling programs.
According to a 2009 UBS study of 73 world cities, Miami was ranked as the richest city in the United States, and the world's fifth-richest city in terms of purchasing power. Miami is nicknamed the "Capital of Latin America" and is the largest city with a Cuban-American plurality.
Miami has the third tallest skyline in the U.S. with over 300 high-rises. Downtown Miami is home to the largest concentration of international banks in the United States, and many large national and international companies. The Civic Center is a major center for hospitals, research institutes, medical centers, and biotechnology industries.
For more than two decades, the Port of Miami, known as the "Cruise Capital of the World", has been the number one cruise passenger port in the world. It accommodates some of the world's largest cruise ships and operations and is the busiest port in both passenger traffic and cruise lines.
Metropolitan Miami is the major tourism hub in the American South, number two in the U.S. after New York City and number 13 in the world, including the popular destination of Miami Beach.

In addition to the roseate spoonbills that I posted previously, one of the other bird species that I had most wanted to photograph on my trip to Florida was black skimmers. I'm fascinated by these beautiful and interesting birds, and I had seen them only a few times in northern California (and always at quite a distance). It was really cool to be able to approach them on the beach (well, more accurately on a sand bar out on the tidal flats), and to see such a large flock of them in the morning light.

Quartz crystals on bed of muscovite, Vale Gallery, Canadian Museum of Nature, Ottawa.
Fab specimen from Minas Gerais, Brazil. Two leading other locales with a variety of large gemmy minerals on muscovite are Gilgat Pakistan and Xuebaoding China.
And unlike topaz, beryl or spodumene crystals of size on mica, quartz is often quite a bit more affordable.

A hint of blue sky but depressingly huge clouds rolling in.
We had a quick trip to a nearby lake to see what was about. I found plenty of wildflowers trying to bloom but no butterflies on the wing and only a few damselflies and dragonflies.

Adaptive Optics Sodium Beacon: Laser Guide Star at the W. M. Keck Observatory at the summit of Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii.
From it's Wiki :: Sodium beacons are created by using a laser specially tuned to 589.2 nanometers to energize a layer of sodium atoms which are naturally present in the mesosphere at an altitude of around 90 kilometers. The sodium atoms then re-emit the laser light, producing a glowing artificial star. The lasers are often pulsed, with measurement of the atmosphere being time-gated (taking place a few microseconds after the pulse has been launched so that scattered light at ground level is ignored and only light which has traveled for several microseconds high up into the atmosphere and back is actually detected).
Science is cool.

"Chashma-Ayub Mausoleum is located in Bukhara, Uzbekistan. Its name means Job's well, due to the legend in which Job (Ayub) visited this place and made a well by striking the ground with his staff. The water of this well is still pure and is considered healing. The current building was constructed during the reign of Timur and features a Khwarazm-style conical dome uncommon in Bukhara."
