I bought this at a garage sale for $2 on Monday, but didn't really have a way to get it home because I had biked that day. My friend held onto it for me until today. I ordered the missing part on Adorama, and it should be here... eventually.

I can't wait to use it.

Grumman F3F-2 on display at The National Naval Aviation Museum, NAS Pensacola. This aircraft was flown by Medal of Honor recipient Brigadier General Robert Edward Galer. It was the first of 5 aircraft he abandoned during his career. In 1990 it was recovered off the coast of California after 50 years under water.

Southern Pacific Flume No 2 on Cartwright Creek, 1907-1915.

In late 1906 and early 1907, the Southern Pacific Railroad built three mills and one lumber camp in the Mohawk valley to cut railroad ties and bridge timbers. SP Mill 1 was north of Marcola and was connected to the Wendling Branch railroad line at Hyland station via short spur. SP Mills 2 and 3 though had no such easy connection to the railroad.

These two mills cut railroad ties and floated them to a loading dock in Marcola via flumes. Here we see the start of the flume on Cartwright Creek from Mill 2. You can see railroad ties stacked and ready to be placed in the flume. The pile of smaller wood is a stack of slats used as spacer when stacking the ties.

The loading dock was along the tracks just north of the old Marcola grade school.

Now transferred over to Chester-le-Street but only temporary as its on a depot tour this will tour all the depots except for Peterlee as that is an outstation Social Distancing was observed seen here in Newcastle on Angel Service 21 to Durham

‘Scene’ in the SouthWest. Exeter 2

on ‘Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk

The City of Exeter is one of my many favourite places. A small City (as cities go), near the sea, compact, clean and busy.

It used to have a good bus station and parking area that at the end of March 2017 unfortunately was supposed to close for re-developement.

This was delayed until September 2017 and was again delayed until February 2018 ‘at the latest’.

We shall have to wait and see what (if any) sort of facility replaces it.

Very much a ‘Stagecoach South West’ (SSW) stronghold but there are some intruders.

New to ‘Stagecoach Bluebird’ but now allocated to ‘SSW’s training fleet.

Incidentally, I saw another of this batch in Kyle of Lochalsh, Scotland last year.

Impala is branching out into sailing: I have since I was a boy, had a passion for the rivers and broads of Norfolk. An opportunity to sail in traditional wooden yachts that were built in the 1930’s and 40’s came my way a few years ago so I grasped it firmly with both hands.

These yachts have no engines, so casting off and eventually coming back alongside require a lot of skill and thought. You have to take into account the wind (often contrary) and other boats with engines (often not really under control) and the speed that your boat is slipping through the river, as the staithe hove’s into view. The planned approach has to be a flexible one due to the aforementioned wind, boats and speed. It is very satisfying coming alongside with the way of the boat coming to an end as you step gently off the bows and onto the shore. Sometimes the stepping of is a little hurried so as to stop the last bit of way yourself, but not very often.

I am toying with the idea of setting up skippered sails using this type of traditional boat so keep an eye on our website for further news. I am going to call this arm of Impala - Whispering Willows sailing.

This picture of Hustler 2 ridding to her anchor under a blue, blue sky was taken during this week of hot sunshine after rather a long time of rains.
