Chicago & North Western liveried Dash 9-44CW 8681 leads a pair of Union Pacific SD60Ms and a SD40-2 on a Union Pacific stack train, as they enter Sullivan's Curve, Cajon Pass, California.
As the SD50's were quickly falling from favor in 2007 on the UP and going into storage and retirement, it was a great catch at the time to see one leading. This Mo-Pac veteran is accompanied by an Ex-SP SD40M-2 on UP Train MTRLI 23 south at MP 44 on the UP Jonesboro Sub., former Cotton Belt territory.
At the time I knew the SD50's were on borrowed time, but as it turns out both of these engines had run out their last miles for the Union Pacific by the end of 2008 with the massive storage lines that turned into a motive power purge.

A westbound Metra commuter train passes Tower A-2 in Chicago, IL on Nov. 11, 2024 with SD70MACH No. 503. The SD70MACH's were one of the reasons I wanted to shoot at A-2 on the way back from Beecherfest. I really like them.
With a 38-year-old SD40-2 on the head end, CP 259-21 roars through the crossover at Seidel on Reading & Northern trackage.
It's been a while since I've uploaded any local photos.

Two snowdrops growing through the undergrowth in February 2017. The background is a mixture of last years fallen leaves and a distant tree trunk, all diffused by using f3.2 on a macro lens.
VIA Rail No. 2, the Canadian, is approaching the outskirts of Thunder Bay Ont. on July 15, 1984. The train will be moved to the CN route and skip Thunder Bay in January 1990.
A westbound Union Pacific manifest works its way up-grade with two unusual visitors from the Northern Rockies. Distant rumbles of thunder from a building storm is drowned out by the howl of prime movers lifting tonnage up one of the most challenging grades on the continent, While the Moffat averages about 2% on its climb from Denver, the grade at this spot is almost 2.5%, making this the most challenging section of track for westbound trains on The Moffat Road. 5/17

Union Pacific GE B40-8 5635 led a SD40-2 on a M-PRIT on a backlit morning along the Milwaukee Subdivision in 2003.
The former Southern Pacific GE was crossing West Lake Street in Glenview on its way out of Chicagoland. I have no idea what those tarped things were.
8134, 8133 and 8173 skirt the coastline between Omega Tunnels 3 and 2 on the approach to Kiama with loaded Manildra container train 9138 from Nowra to Enfield.
The clock is ticking with Pacific National hauling this service. Starting on the 1 of November 2024, Southern Shorthaul Railroad will commence haulage of all Manildra services.

The story of this photo:
I have been exploring macro photography lately. You probably know me for my HDR work, and don't worry, I will keep on creating HDRs. But I was always fascinated with macro photos. However, I was fully aware that creating stunning macros is very difficult. So I studied macro photography (without practicing it) until I had a pretty good idea of how to approach it.
A few weeks ago, I bought myself a Nikon Micro 105mm lens (also a nice portrait lens), some flash equipment and a few other thing, and I started exploring the world of the small actively. This is the very first macro shot I publish. It was set up using a blue cardboard as a background, three flashes, and a Gerbera flower (of course) on my table top.

An unusually late CSXT/Pan Am train LA-2 (local freight from Lawrence) that normally comes down to Boston under the cover of darkness surprised me when they showed up right in the midst of the morning rush hour as I was getting off work. The Terminal dispatcher made quick work of them allowing them to come down off tbe New Hampshire Route High Line up to the front ladder and then make their reverse move back east toward Reading Junction and over on to the Eastern Route to clear up in the Coke Works at Everett Junction.
Here are the pair of B40-8s (MEC 5976 and 5958) shoving 22 cara over the hump of Draw 7 bridge crossing the Mystic River at about MP 2.2 on the MBTA/Keolis Eastern Route mainline. All of the new development in the background,at what is now known as Assembly Square, sits in the middle of what was once Boston and Maine Yard 21 that as late as the early 1980s was bustling with cars and rated its own switcher. Less than four decades on and you'd never know it existed....

There are only 10 units in CP's marvellous Heritage scheme on the roster, so getting 2 on one train is a rare find. The leader in block, the second in script have 421 starting up the Mactier Sub in Toronto on their way to Winnipeg....with a lot of followers.
With a Heritage I SD40-2 on the point, BNSF train R-HLA6911-30I holds on Main Track 1 of the BNSF Ft. Scott Sub at Charlie as it's passed by coal train crossing over from 2 to 1 in front of it. Operating out of BNSF's Murray Yard, this train has just finished setting out cars at Lenexa, and now its trying to make its way to Moss Siding near Bonita. 4/30/23.
Blossom on our cherry tree is coming on nicely. I took this with a Helios 44-2 on an extension tube after a rain shower.
A former Conrail Quality GP38-2 leads an unusual consist on 18G. The consist (not visible) includes an NS C39-8 and CSX SD50. The train is approaching Prospect Ave on Conrail's Lehigh Line.

Late afternoon winter sunlight shines through a light haze between tunnels 1 and 2 on Tehachapi as a north bound BNSF intermodal drifts down grade.

Last Monday someone had spotted a subadult black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) (in dutch: Kwak) in a certain place. But I couldn't go and look. On Tuesday another birdwatcher had seen 2. On Wednesday I could finally go and look and they were nicely visible. I could photograph number 1 and 2 species. On Thursday I went back and then there were three!!! Number 3 is possibly the third, but the other 2 were behind too many branches for a good photo. In this photo you can see the blue beak of a second one at the left of the night heron.

I went into Iona Beach today hoping to spot a Yellow-headed Blackbird. I wasn't holding out a lot of hope as the past couple of times I have been there I either dipped on a sighting or spotted one so far away a photograph was impossible. Today however I hadn't even stepped out of the car and there was one waiting for me. Not only was he waiting but he hung around for a good long time while I took pictures. I love it when bird co-operate.

A while back a Flickr friend said he was gong to try and photograph all the birds he spots this year. It sounded like such a fun project that I decided I would do the same. As birds never stay still long enough for that ideal photo I expect there to be a lot of so/so shots. Possibly a few decent ones and then the duds which will have no other purpose than to be record shot. I have held off posting any photos to the album thinking I may get better shots later but now have decided it is time to take the plunge. Either way it should be fun to see how this turns out.

Shot originally with Pentax Spotmatic 2 on Ilford HP4. Negative photgraphed with Fujifilm X-T3, 18-55, and MCEX16 extension tube. Reversal and processing in Lightroom.
The European Service Module-2 and Orion crew module adapter for the Artemis II Orion spacecraft was moved into the Final Assembly and System Testing (FAST) cell inside NASA's Operations and Checkout Building at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA, on 22 May 2023. The spacecraft modules will be integrated with the crew module before being handed over to NASA's Exploration Ground Systems for fuelling. The European Service Module holds 8000 l of fuel in four tanks that is distributed to 33 engines.
The first European Service Module exceeded expectations on the Artemis I mission, powering the Orion spacecraft around the Moon and back on its test flight. It supplied temperature control, propulsion and electricity for the spacecraft. For the two-week Artemis II mission the European Service Module-2 will have even more critical tasks as it needs to supply drinking water and breathable air to the four astronauts in the Orion capsule: NASA’s Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch and Canadian Space Agency’s Jeremy Hansen.
In June ESA formally hands over the European Service Module-2 to NASA, ready for integration with the Orion crew capsule and then on the road to the launchpad, set for liftoff around the Moon in 2024.

Leaving Junland Siding on the UP Hoxie Sub. and passing by a Proctor landplane is UP Train AARAS 06 getting underway after sitting 5 hours waiting on a relief crew.
The Southern Pacific SD40M-2 on the point was a welcome sight even then as their numbers were quickly dwindling. The NS GP60 3rd out also wasn't exactly common. Today you won't find a single engine operating with SP reporting marks, and I doubt you'll find an NS GP60 wandering off their system at all.

I've been running low on Monorail Monday shots, lately, so when the sky turned cloudy a couple weeks ago, I grabbed my camera and headed to the park with the goal of getting a few monorail shots between showers. I had been trying to get another shot from this location ever since getting a night shot from here last Spring, but the bushes had grown over a bit and it was only recently that the landscaping guys trimmed back the verge enough to open up this view again from the opposite side of the lagoon.

This is what the borg looked like shortly after its first assimilation. G&W C424m's 63 & 62 lead Northbound R&S train RS-2 on the little bridge over Battin Road in Rock Glen, NY on August 9, 1986. Power was initially the pair of C424m's along with leased P&LE SW switchers. Chessie power would also run through from Salamanca. By this time the fleet of GP40's were arriving on the property too.
