Gli stagni di Cagliari sono l'altra faccia di una città ricca di fascino che oltre alle spiagge e ai monumenti ha anche un grande patrimonio naturale. Sono le oasi di Molentargius e Santa Gilla, che si trovano agli estremi opposti del centro abitato: si tratta di due grandi specchi d'acqua dove vivono tante specie di volatili. Lì, nelle strisce di terra che separano i vari stagni d'acqua dolce e salmastre, fanno il loro nido. Tra tutte le specie, i fenicotteri rosa (chiamati dalla popolazione Sarda, "sa genti arrubia" "la gente rossa" per il loro vociare simile a quello degli esseri umani), che da più di dieci anni nidificano nelle acque salate delle lagune e sono diventati uno dei simboli della città.
Durante le migrazioni dalla Camargue, sulle foci del Rodano, all’Africa mediterranea e fino al Senegal, questi volatili sostano negli stagni costieri della Sardegna Occidentale, che offrono loro condizioni di vita ideali (non a caso dal 1993 migliaia di fenicotteri nidificano nello stagno di Molentargius presso Cagliari).
La suggestiva immagine di questi trampolieri si offre ai nostri occhi se abbiamo la pazienza di sostare presso gli specchi d’acqua di Molentargius e di Santa Gilla, siti naturalistici protetti dalla convenzione di Ramsar per la tutela delle zone umide di importanza internazionale.

Auf dem Weg zur Arbeit kommen wir an einem prachtvollen Blumenfeld vorbei.
Heute musste ich einmal die vielen Schmetterlinge bei ihrer Nahrungssuche kurz stören.
Es war nämlich am frühen Morgen recht ansprechendes Licht.
Nach knapp 10 Minute beendete ich die "Ruhestörung" dann auch schon wieder.

Painted in 1983... and I guess restoration in 2006.. as we were visiting Chemainus. 6.5M X 6.4M (21’ X 20’), Waterwheel Crescent. Loggers at the V L & M Co. Ltd. Camp 2 (circa 1902) would spend part of their Sundays around the bunkhouse. It was the day for washing up and tending to one’s personal grooming. Half barrels and 18.18 litres (four gal) coal oil cans were used as washtubs, while a rail spike keg made a great barber’s chair. At about this time, mining fever erupted, with rich strikes of gold and copper resulting in new mining operations opening up at Mount Sicker, Tyee and Lenora. These competed for the loggers’ labour and commitment to the company.

Another favorite from the chase of my 8th successful Batten Kill day that brought my 'batting average' up to .500.
This is one of the signature shots along the line and one I'd longed to do with some fall color on 1300 ft Mt. Tom to the east. While it was late in the day and the overcast necessitated that I creep up the ISO I'm still thrilled with this shot of the colors near peak here surrounding the old weather beaten wooden silos.
Very much on home rails, G&J 4116, a veteran ex D&H Alco RS3 (blt. Sep. 1952) is seen crossing Brownell's Corner Road at about MP A139.2 on the old Delaware and Hudson Washington Branch as measured from Albany the long way around via Catleton, Whitehall, and Mechanicville.

This photo came from my first night shooting sunset at Mohave Pt. in Grand Canyon National Park, April, 2024. Hopi Pt. is more recommended in travel books but we spent more time here late in the day because (1) you get good 270 degree views as you work around the point (including a ribbon of the Colorado River), and (2) on a practical basis, the shuttle doesn't stop at Hopi on its way back.
Photography taken at Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage (Sinhala: පින්නවල අලි අනාථාගාරය), is a captive breeding and conservation institute for wild Asian elephants located at Pinnawala village, 13 km (8.1 mi) northeast of Kegalle town in Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. Pinnawala has the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. In 2023, there were 71 elephants, including 30 males and 41 females from 3 generations, living in Pinnawala.[1]
The orphanage was founded to care and protect the many orphaned unweaned wild elephants found wandering in and near the forests of Sri Lanka. It was established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC).[2]
On 31 August 2021, a 25 year old elephant named Surangi gave birth to twin male baby elephants at the orphanage.[3][4] It also marked the first instance of the birth of twin elephants in Sri Lanka after a gap of 80 years since 1941.

Pociąg jedzie torem niewłaściwym, gdyż tor nr 2 tej linii był na tym odcinku w tak kiepskim stanie, że maksymalna prędkość zostałą ograniczona do 10 km/h, więc większość pociągów używała toru 1. jadąc w obu kierunkach. 13 kwietnia 2003 roku.

Viele Freunde des Sekretärs kennen wohl Pedro, den Bären. Aber kaum jemand weiss von seinem guten Freund Bruno. Bruno ist ein Kissen-Hund, der nun schon seit vielen Jahren bei der Familie des Sekretärs ist. Die beiden können ganze Tage zusammen auf dem Sofa verbringen und einvernehmlich schweigen (Na gut, manchmal ist schon ein freundliches Brummen zu hören, auf das als Antwort ein gemütliches Bellen ertönt, oder anders herum).
(Bemerkung: Die Aufnahme entstand mit einem alten Leitz Summar f=5cm 1:2 an einem Fujifilm X-T4 Body.)

Many of Secretary's friends probably know Pedro the bear. But hardly anyone knows about his good friend Bruno. Bruno is a cushion dog who has been with Secretary's family for many years now. The two can spend whole days together on the sofa and remain mutually silent (well, sometimes a friendly growl can be heard in response to a cozy bark, or vice versa).

A Utah Railway coal empty from Provo Yard marches east up the Mapleton Bench near Spanish Fork, Utah on April 14, 1996. Leading the charge is former Santa Fe SD45-2 No. 5855, a locomotive that for eight years was powered by a 4200 horsepower Caterpillar Model 3612 engine. By 1996, Morrison Knudsen pulled the Cat engine and replaced it with a standard EMD 20 cylinder, 3200 horsepower prime mover, about two months before this portrait was captured on Kodachrome.

As the SD50's were quickly falling from favor in 2007 on the UP and going into storage and retirement, it was a great catch at the time to see one leading. This Mo-Pac veteran is accompanied by an Ex-SP SD40M-2 on UP Train MTRLI 23 south at MP 44 on the UP Jonesboro Sub., former Cotton Belt territory.
At the time I knew the SD50's were on borrowed time, but as it turns out both of these engines had run out their last miles for the Union Pacific by the end of 2008 with the massive storage lines that turned into a motive power purge.

A westbound Metra commuter train passes Tower A-2 in Chicago, IL on Nov. 11, 2024 with SD70MACH No. 503. The SD70MACH's were one of the reasons I wanted to shoot at A-2 on the way back from Beecherfest. I really like them.
With a 38-year-old SD40-2 on the head end, CP 259-21 roars through the crossover at Seidel on Reading & Northern trackage.
