The Metéora (Greek: Μετέωρα, pronounced [mɛˈtɛoɾɐ], lit. "middle of the sky", "suspended in the air" or "in the heavens above" — etymologically related to meteorology) is one of the largest and most important complexes of Greek Orthodox monasteries in Greece, second only to Mount Athos.[1] The six monasteries are built on natural sandstone rock pillars, at the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly near the Pineios river and Pindus Mountains, in central Greece. The nearest town is Kalambaka. The Metéora is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List under criteria[2]I, II, IV, V and VII
The Theopetra caves 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) south of Meteora had inhabitants fifty millennia ago.[4] The oldest known example of a man-made structure was found within a prehistoric cave in central Greece, according to the Greek culture ministry. The structure is a stone wall that blocked two-thirds of the entrance to the Theopetra cave near Kalambaka on the north edge of the Thessalian plain. It was constructed 23,000 years ago, probably as a barrier to cold winds. “An optical dating test, known as Optically Stimulated Luminescence, was applied on quartz grains nested within the stones. We dated four different samples from the sediment and soil materials, and all provided identical dates,” Nikolaos Zacharias, director of the laboratory of archaeometry at the University of Peloponnese, told Discovery News. According to a statement by the ministry of culture, “the dating matches the coldest period of the most recent ice age, indicating that the cavern’s inhabitants built the stone wall to protect themselves from the cold.” Excavated since 1987, the Theopetra cave is well known to palaeontologists as it was used and inhabited continuously from the Palaeolithic period onwards (50,000 to 5,000 years ago).[5]
In the 9th century, an ascetic group of hermit monks moved up to the ancient pinnacles.
They were the first people to inhabit Metéora. They lived in hollows and fissures in the rock towers, some of which reach 1800 ft (550m) above the plain. This great height, combined with the sheerness of the cliff walls, kept away all but the most determined visitors. Initially the hermits led a life of solitude, meeting only on Sundays and special days to worship and pray in a chapel built at the foot of a rock known as Dhoupiani. As early as the 11th century AD hermit monks were believed to be living among the caves and cutouts in the rocks.[1]
The exact date of the establishment of the monasteries is unknown. By the late 11th and early 12th centuries, a rudimentary monastic state had formed called the Skete of Stagoiand was centered around the still-standing church of Theotokos (mother of God).[1] By the end of the 12th century, an ascetic community had flocked to Metéora.
In 1344, Athanasios Koinovitis from Mount Athos brought a group of followers to Metéora. From 1356 to 1372, he founded the great Meteoron monastery on Broad Rock, which were perfect for the monks; they were safe from political upheaval and had complete control of the entry to the monastery. The only means of reaching it was by climbing a long ladder, which was drawn up whenever the monks felt threatened.
At the end of the 14th century, the Byzantine Empire's 800-year reign over northern Greecewas being increasingly threatened by Turkish raiders who wanted control over the fertile plain of Thessaly. The hermit monks, seeking a retreat from the expanding Turkish occupation, found the inaccessible rock pillars of Meteora to be an ideal refuge. More than 20 monasteries were built, beginning in the 14th century.[1] Six remain today.
In 1517, Nectarios and Theophanes built the monastery of Varlaám, which was reputed to house the finger of St John and the shoulder blade of St Andrew.
Access to the monasteries was originally (and deliberately) difficult, requiring either long ladders lashed together or large nets used to haul up both goods and people. This required quite a leap of faith – the ropes were replaced, so the story goes, only "when the Lord let them break".[6] In the words of UNESCO, "The net in which intrepid pilgrims were hoisted up vertically alongside the 373 metres (1,224 ft) cliff where the Varlaam monastery dominates the valley symbolizes the fragility of a traditional way of life that is threatened with extinction."[7]
In 1921, Queen Marie of Romania visited Meteora, becoming the first woman ever allowed to enter the Great Meteoron monastery.[8] In the 1920s there was an improvement in the arrangements. Steps were cut into the rock, making the complex accessible via a bridge from the nearby plateau. During World War II the site was bombed.[citation needed] Many art treasures were stolen.[citation needed]
Until the 17th century, the primary means of conveying goods and people from these eyries was by means of baskets and ropes.[9]
Six of the monasteries remain today.[7] Of these six, four were inhabited by men, and two by women. Each monastery has fewer than 10 inhabitants. The monasteries are now tourist attractions.

1. This is for a wonderful little boy whose parents, perhaps without knowing it or meaning to, have helped so many preemie and micropreemie parents through what is an awfully scary time.
2. I had my idea of what this was going to look like and then my husband had his. He sent me to www.futhark.com to study some runes. It was a good idea.
3. I think I'm pretty obsessed with these misty blue-grey backgrounds. I would like to say it is the influence of winter here in southeastern Pennsylvania, USA, but actually our winter is this seemingly endless expanse of grody, frozen brown. So, these misty blue-grey backgrounds are what I wish winter would look like. And then I wish winter would dump some good sledding snow on me and go away really quickly.
4. Yes, this does make me feel like unpacking flat boxes of unassembled furniture and cursing over Allen keys. We got the Sverker series of shelves when we were first married and Sverker became an expletive in our home. It's still handy.
5. I went scrounging after some Swedish music too and the best I had was a-ha (Norwegian). I loooooooooved a-ha when I was a youngun. Forget "Take On Me," the other stuff is lovely and dramatic and totally 80's and I think my friend Keri should put it on loudly and write novels to it.
6. Speaking of writing and books and best loved poems, I miss my friend Julie so much, and Julie never says no to a good book.

5. I've never broken a bone in my whole body. Although I did have to get 8 staples in my head. Probably why I am the way I am! (Better not be any smart remarks ;))
6. Not getting chicken pox twice is a myth...I've had them twice!
7. I got bit by a spider when I was younger. My Dr. believes it was a black widow. My foot blew up and I couldn't wear shoes for a month. Then I accidentally popped it with my other foot while at a picnic. (It was itchy) It oozed everywhere. Eew. Sorry. Gross!
8. I really love to clean. It relieves stress. I tend to do alot of it when I am agitated. And my house is usually spotless....hmmm. :/ (SEE NUMBER 1)
9. I LOATHE talking on the phone. It makes me really nervous.
10. I am an only child. I wish more than anything that I wasn't. I can't imagine having siblings. :( But, friends and in-laws help fill the gap. I love you guys. More than you could possibly know.

a recreation of the Sabre Jet from Lego Indiana Jones 2. I love the amount of stylization that was done when designing this, its fantastic. He was apparently able to fit an engine into this? I couldnt figure that out, it would have been too weak.

Today was my 12th week of chemo treatment - Cycle 3 Week 2. I realised I had just taken bland photos with the pills I take each week in addition to my Velcade chemo treatment at the hospital - thought that flowers would be nice today.
There are 10 dexamethasone pills and 10 cyclophosphamide pills in the shape of a 12. Each cycle is 5 weeks so this is Cycle 3, Week 2.
My chemo session went well (two needles 140ml, 150ml in my right side this week) and I'm staying positive!

PJP 2. I could have knocked his hat off if I really had wanted to. We were that close. I was pretty shocked at how shitty the people that went to this mass treated each other. There was a lot of pushing, shoving, and running...even by priests and nuns.
Side skirts and 16" teledials say this a Veloce trim as it was called then, having previously been called Sport Pack 2 (I think) It was definitely Veloce by Y plate as mine was recorded as such.
Anyway - the picture was taken as I spent more time than I'd expected trying to find some sort of tray to put on my roof bars so I could attach things other than a roof box to them. In the end I ended up with a 'Mont Blanc 102u' which was approximately one sixth the price of the Thule offering, but is a bit shorter than I envisaged.
On spotting the rack on this car I thought 'aha - that's a decent size - I wonder what make it is?' On closer inspection it appears to be an old gate or something, but a few U bolts have transformed it into a perfectly good load deck.

The Metéora (Greek: Μετέωρα, pronounced [mɛˈtɛoɾɐ], lit. "middle of the sky", "suspended in the air" or "in the heavens above" — etymologically related to meteorology) is one of the largest and most important complexes of Greek Orthodox monasteries in Greece, second only to Mount Athos.[1] The six monasteries are built on natural sandstone rock pillars, at the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly near the Pineios river and Pindus Mountains, in central Greece. The nearest town is Kalambaka. The Metéora is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List under criteria[2]I, II, IV, V and VII
The Theopetra caves 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) south of Meteora had inhabitants fifty millennia ago.[4] The oldest known example of a man-made structure was found within a prehistoric cave in central Greece, according to the Greek culture ministry. The structure is a stone wall that blocked two-thirds of the entrance to the Theopetra cave near Kalambaka on the north edge of the Thessalian plain. It was constructed 23,000 years ago, probably as a barrier to cold winds. “An optical dating test, known as Optically Stimulated Luminescence, was applied on quartz grains nested within the stones. We dated four different samples from the sediment and soil materials, and all provided identical dates,” Nikolaos Zacharias, director of the laboratory of archaeometry at the University of Peloponnese, told Discovery News. According to a statement by the ministry of culture, “the dating matches the coldest period of the most recent ice age, indicating that the cavern’s inhabitants built the stone wall to protect themselves from the cold.” Excavated since 1987, the Theopetra cave is well known to palaeontologists as it was used and inhabited continuously from the Palaeolithic period onwards (50,000 to 5,000 years ago).[5]
In the 9th century, an ascetic group of hermit monks moved up to the ancient pinnacles.
They were the first people to inhabit Metéora. They lived in hollows and fissures in the rock towers, some of which reach 1800 ft (550m) above the plain. This great height, combined with the sheerness of the cliff walls, kept away all but the most determined visitors. Initially the hermits led a life of solitude, meeting only on Sundays and special days to worship and pray in a chapel built at the foot of a rock known as Dhoupiani. As early as the 11th century AD hermit monks were believed to be living among the caves and cutouts in the rocks.[1]
The exact date of the establishment of the monasteries is unknown. By the late 11th and early 12th centuries, a rudimentary monastic state had formed called the Skete of Stagoiand was centered around the still-standing church of Theotokos (mother of God).[1] By the end of the 12th century, an ascetic community had flocked to Metéora.
In 1344, Athanasios Koinovitis from Mount Athos brought a group of followers to Metéora. From 1356 to 1372, he founded the great Meteoron monastery on Broad Rock, which were perfect for the monks; they were safe from political upheaval and had complete control of the entry to the monastery. The only means of reaching it was by climbing a long ladder, which was drawn up whenever the monks felt threatened.
At the end of the 14th century, the Byzantine Empire's 800-year reign over northern Greecewas being increasingly threatened by Turkish raiders who wanted control over the fertile plain of Thessaly. The hermit monks, seeking a retreat from the expanding Turkish occupation, found the inaccessible rock pillars of Meteora to be an ideal refuge. More than 20 monasteries were built, beginning in the 14th century.[1] Six remain today.
In 1517, Nectarios and Theophanes built the monastery of Varlaám, which was reputed to house the finger of St John and the shoulder blade of St Andrew.
Access to the monasteries was originally (and deliberately) difficult, requiring either long ladders lashed together or large nets used to haul up both goods and people. This required quite a leap of faith – the ropes were replaced, so the story goes, only "when the Lord let them break".[6] In the words of UNESCO, "The net in which intrepid pilgrims were hoisted up vertically alongside the 373 metres (1,224 ft) cliff where the Varlaam monastery dominates the valley symbolizes the fragility of a traditional way of life that is threatened with extinction."[7]
In 1921, Queen Marie of Romania visited Meteora, becoming the first woman ever allowed to enter the Great Meteoron monastery.[8] In the 1920s there was an improvement in the arrangements. Steps were cut into the rock, making the complex accessible via a bridge from the nearby plateau. During World War II the site was bombed.[citation needed] Many art treasures were stolen.[citation needed]
Until the 17th century, the primary means of conveying goods and people from these eyries was by means of baskets and ropes.[9]
Six of the monasteries remain today.[7] Of these six, four were inhabited by men, and two by women. Each monastery has fewer than 10 inhabitants. The monasteries are now tourist attractions.

16 things… this must be better than therapy… I hate introspection… but it looks like I like … three little dots… now is that three things…. I think not.
1.I tend to ramble, when I talk or write… it is like an association game… generally I dislike games… but it is fun to win… oh I ramble.
2. I am retired after working for 30 years and one day… which I loved until the last two years… hence my present condition.
3.I love to cook… hence my present condition… cause I also like to eat my cooking… and so does my wife … friends… ooops.
4.I have also been known to enjoy a beer if scots or Irish… a whisky if Irish… even red wine if American.
5.I prefer bottled water to tap… if you lived in Atlanta you would understand… I prefer sparkling to still water… hmmm seem to be fixated on food.
6.My priority in life is to find a way to slow down time… it is not right that as you get older time speeds up… even if you just sit and do nothing, which I tried, it still just speeds by… so you might as well keep moving.
7.I love the a good film… fine dinning, plays, live music… picnics, friends… just a few at a time… family can be a pain but I tolerate… but to tell you the truth I would rather be with my wife sitting on the couch watching TV and holding hands.
8.I get a real kick outta my dogs… they have replaced my son as someone I have to take care of… he is on his own… has his own mind… and we go through spells… right now we are good… he is thirty years younger…so… let’s see, I hate math… oh he is 33.

6. I once took a cow for a walk into a city centre then put it in a lift. It didn’t survive but I was very drunk and it was funny

9. I played hockey a lot when was younger and played for the South Yorkshire Police side when I was around 16 years old and didn’t work for them

The Metéora (Greek: Μετέωρα, pronounced [mɛˈtɛoɾɐ], lit. "middle of the sky", "suspended in the air" or "in the heavens above" — etymologically related to meteorology) is one of the largest and most important complexes of Greek Orthodoxmonasteries in Greece, second only to Mount Athos.[1] The six monasteries are built on natural sandstone rock pillars, at the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly near the Pineios river and Pindus Mountains, in central Greece. The nearest town is Kalambaka. The Metéora is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List under criteria[2]I, II, IV, V and VII
The Theopetra caves 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) south of Meteora had inhabitants fifty millennia ago.[4] The oldest known example of a man-made structure was found within a prehistoric cave in central Greece, according to the Greek culture ministry. The structure is a stone wall that blocked two-thirds of the entrance to the Theopetra cave near Kalambaka on the north edge of the Thessalian plain. It was constructed 23,000 years ago, probably as a barrier to cold winds. “An optical dating test, known as Optically Stimulated Luminescence, was applied on quartz grains nested within the stones. We dated four different samples from the sediment and soil materials, and all provided identical dates,” Nikolaos Zacharias, director of the laboratory of archaeometry at the University of Peloponnese, told Discovery News. According to a statement by the ministry of culture, “the dating matches the coldest period of the most recent ice age, indicating that the cavern’s inhabitants built the stone wall to protect themselves from the cold.” Excavated since 1987, the Theopetra cave is well known to palaeontologists as it was used and inhabited continuously from the Palaeolithic period onwards (50,000 to 5,000 years ago).[5]
In the 9th century, an ascetic group of hermit monks moved up to the ancient pinnacles.
They were the first people to inhabit Metéora. They lived in hollows and fissures in the rock towers, some of which reach 1800 ft (550m) above the plain. This great height, combined with the sheerness of the cliff walls, kept away all but the most determined visitors. Initially the hermits led a life of solitude, meeting only on Sundays and special days to worship and pray in a chapel built at the foot of a rock known as Dhoupiani. As early as the 11th century AD hermit monks were believed to be living among the caves and cutouts in the rocks.[1]
The exact date of the establishment of the monasteries is unknown. By the late 11th and early 12th centuries, a rudimentary monastic state had formed called the Skete of Stagoiand was centered around the still-standing church of Theotokos (mother of God).[1] By the end of the 12th century, an ascetic community had flocked to Metéora.
In 1344, Athanasios Koinovitis from Mount Athos brought a group of followers to Metéora. From 1356 to 1372, he founded the great Meteoron monastery on Broad Rock, which were perfect for the monks; they were safe from political upheaval and had complete control of the entry to the monastery. The only means of reaching it was by climbing a long ladder, which was drawn up whenever the monks felt threatened.
At the end of the 14th century, the Byzantine Empire's 800-year reign over northern Greecewas being increasingly threatened by Turkish raiders who wanted control over the fertile plain of Thessaly. The hermit monks, seeking a retreat from the expanding Turkish occupation, found the inaccessible rock pillars of Meteora to be an ideal refuge. More than 20 monasteries were built, beginning in the 14th century.[1] Six remain today.
In 1517, Nectarios and Theophanes built the monastery of Varlaám, which was reputed to house the finger of St John and the shoulder blade of St Andrew.
Access to the monasteries was originally (and deliberately) difficult, requiring either long ladders lashed together or large nets used to haul up both goods and people. This required quite a leap of faith – the ropes were replaced, so the story goes, only "when the Lord let them break".[6] In the words of UNESCO, "The net in which intrepid pilgrims were hoisted up vertically alongside the 373 metres (1,224 ft) cliff where the Varlaam monastery dominates the valley symbolizes the fragility of a traditional way of life that is threatened with extinction."[7]
In 1921, Queen Marie of Romania visited Meteora, becoming the first woman ever allowed to enter the Great Meteoron monastery.[8] In the 1920s there was an improvement in the arrangements. Steps were cut into the rock, making the complex accessible via a bridge from the nearby plateau. During World War II the site was bombed.[citation needed] Many art treasures were stolen.[citation needed]
Until the 17th century, the primary means of conveying goods and people from these eyries was by means of baskets and ropes.[9]
Six of the monasteries remain today.[7] Of these six, four were inhabited by men, and two by women. Each monastery has fewer than 10 inhabitants. The monasteries are now tourist attractions

I've been tagged by a few people here on Flickr, and now the "tag thing" seems to be going around on Facebook ... so I figured I'd write one of these things.
I'm not going to tag anyone else ... but if you're really interested in boring 'ol me ... read on. ;-)
(BTW, the Flickr tag asks for 16 things, the Facebook one for 25, so I'll split the difference, sort of, and do 21).
So, 21 things you may not know about me.
1. I believe that the key to happiness is balance, I'm very much a yin/yang person. Folks who are too extreme about anything tend to make themselves miserable, and hence, those around them miserable.
2. I was brought up Catholic, but the older I get, the more frustrated I've become with organized religion (of any kind). That said, I think Jesus Christ was one heck of a guy ... really smart, and really morally sophisticated. Was he the Son of God? I honestly don't know (I hope so), but in any event, I think the world would be a better place if more people followed his example.
3. Related to #2 ... I've read the New Testament to the Bible twice, cover to cover, and the old Testament once. If you want to be religious, I respect that, but I do believe you should be informed in the way you practice. I also think the world would be a better place if people spent more time worrying about this life rather than an afterlife (which I'm not even sure exists).
4. I'm a cancer survivor ... I was diagnosed with metastatic testicular cancer when I was 25. I did surgery and chemotherapy. It was a surreal, miserable experience ... but I do believe it made me a stronger, wiser person.
5. You wouldn't know it by looking at me, but I'm kind of a rebel (as evidenced by the fact that I'm not doing this Tag thing the way you're supposed to!) ;-) If I think something is wrong, silly, or a waste of time, I'll probably speak out against it, even if it isn't politically smart or ends up hurting me.
6. The thing I hate most in life is bullies ... those who prey on weaker people or creatures. I'm not usually a violent person ... but this is one situation where I will make exceptions. Close behind on my "I hate list" are hypocrites ... and unfortunately I believe that many so called "great" people are hypocrites. For this reason I have very few "heros" (and most are humble, ordinary, hard working people you've never heard of ... the teacher, the nurse, the stay at home Mom, the police officer etc.)
7. I'm very shy in small group social situations. Ask me to lecture to a group of 100 Ph.D.'s ... no problem. Ask me to make small talk with 3 or 4 people I don't know, and I break out into a cold sweat.
8. I don't really watch organized sports (football, basketball, baseball, hockey) but do enjoy strongman competitions. I like the elemental simplicity: either you can lift the big heavy object, or you can't, no excuses, no bull$hit.
9. Physical fitness is very important to me, so I tend to keep myself in pretty good shape. I lift weights regularly (have since I was about 15) and do a moderate amount of cardio. That said, I'm the world's biggest klutz, so I tend to suck at sports.
10. The inner child is strong with me ... I collect Lego and Star Wars toys. Marie (my wonderful wife) recently bought me two replica lightsabers and a Star Destroyer Lego set (the thing has about 3500 pieces ... I haven't finished it yet).
11. On the other end of the spectrum, I also collect American Brilliant Period glass (antique cut crystal from the 1880s - 1910s). The hand made precision and prismatic beauty really appeals to me. I've written a number of articles for antique magazines on the subject.
12. I work to live, I don't live to work. Don't get me wrong, I love teaching and like doing research, but I'd rather be home with my family, out with friends, or outside enjoying the weather than at the office. If I never make Full Professor, but retire as a good family man, valued mentor, trusted friend, and am fulfilled in other parts of my life, that'll be OK with me.
13. As is obvious from my photostream, I love and am awed by nature. I find a simple insect more amazing than the most complicated device human beings have ever built. Moreover, I really like all animals, wild and domestic. Although, unfortunately, I'm allergic to cats, so I have to stay away from them. :-(
14. Most of my political views are moderate, but I can be very conservative about certain things and liberal about others. For instance, I'm unusual among academic criminologists in that I support the Death Penalty. For certain crimes I think nothing else will bring justice ... in fact, I'd like to see the method of execution be more painful. On the other hand, I believe just about all victimless crimes (i.e. acts between consenting adults, or acts where a person makes a decision that only affects themselves directly) should be decriminalized. I think it's completely unjust that there are people in this country serving life sentences for non-violent drug crimes.
15. I may have been born Canadian, but I like firearms. I enjoy target shooting and am pretty good at it. I do not support gun control policies except in a few very specific cases. Because of #13 I don't believe I could ever go hunting though.
16. I take vows and promises very seriously. The ones I take most seriously are my marriage vows. I believe people should only get married if they're really willing to make a lifetime commitment to one another ... particularly if they intend to have kids. If you want to date or live together ... that's cool ... but then you should be very careful about bringing children into that union.
17. That said, my wife and I don't intend to have kids. Don't get me wrong, I love my nieces, nephews and God kids to pieces. The smile of a young child melts my heart. But for a variety of reasons, I don't think parenthood is right for me ... and I do strongly believe that people who don't REALLY want to be parents, shouldn't be (because this does a disservice to their children). I don't understand "career couples" who have children and have them spend all of their time in daycare or with Grand ma and Grand pa. If you want to be a career couple, cool. If you want to be parents, cool ... just don't try to do both.
18. I believe that commitment, and a shared sense of love, are the defining characteristics of marriage. I also believe it isn't my place (or society's place) to tell anyone else who they should love, or be committed to. For this reason I support gay marriage. Homosexuality may not be my thing ... but if two same sex people love and are committed to one another, who am I to tell them that they shouldn't form a legal union?
19. I am now, have always been, and will always be, a geek. I was President of my high school Chess Club (doesn't get any geekier than that, does it!?)
20. I'm offended by people who get offended too easily. ;-) I think political correctness is a load of crap: as if sticking a nice label on something is going to make serious problems like racism and sexism go away! I generally think folks should spend more time working on being good people themselves, rather than telling others how to live.
21. I'm generally a more right brained person than left brained. Photography is about the most artistic thing I do (I did study piano very briefly as a child but gave it up ... I regret that now). Whatever left brainedness I have I got from my Mom (she's a brilliant creative writer). My Dad was an Engineering Professor and my brother is a Ph.D. chemist. They've both forgotten more about math and science than I'll ever know.

They were the first people to inhabit Metéora. They lived in hollows and fissures in the rock towers, some of which reach 1800 ft (550m) above the plain. This great height, combined with the sheerness of the cliff walls, kept away all but the most determined visitors. Initially the hermits led a life of solitude, meeting only on Sundays and special days to worship and pray in a chapel built at the foot of a rock known as Dhoupiani. As early as the 11th century AD hermit monks were believed to be living among the caves and cutouts in the rocks.[1]
The exact date of the establishment of the monasteries is unknown. By the late 11th and early 12th centuries, a rudimentary monastic state had formed called the Skete of Stagoiand was centered around the still-standing church of Theotokos (mother of God).[1] By the end of the 12th century, an ascetic community had flocked to Metéora.
In 1344, Athanasios Koinovitis from Mount Athos brought a group of followers to Metéora. From 1356 to 1372, he founded the great Meteoron monastery on Broad Rock, which were perfect for the monks; they were safe from political upheaval and had complete control of the entry to the monastery. The only means of reaching it was by climbing a long ladder, which was drawn up whenever the monks felt threatened.
At the end of the 14th century, the Byzantine Empire's 800-year reign over northern Greecewas being increasingly threatened by Turkish raiders who wanted control over the fertile plain of Thessaly. The hermit monks, seeking a retreat from the expanding Turkish occupation, found the inaccessible rock pillars of Meteora to be an ideal refuge. More than 20 monasteries were built, beginning in the 14th century.[1] Six remain today.
In 1517, Nectarios and Theophanes built the monastery of Varlaám, which was reputed to house the finger of St John and the shoulder blade of St Andrew.
Access to the monasteries was originally (and deliberately) difficult, requiring either long ladders lashed together or large nets used to haul up both goods and people. This required quite a leap of faith – the ropes were replaced, so the story goes, only "when the Lord let them break".[6] In the words of UNESCO, "The net in which intrepid pilgrims were hoisted up vertically alongside the 373 metres (1,224 ft) cliff where the Varlaam monastery dominates the valley symbolizes the fragility of a traditional way of life that is threatened with extinction."[7]
In 1921, Queen Marie of Romania visited Meteora, becoming the first woman ever allowed to enter the Great Meteoron monastery.[8] In the 1920s there was an improvement in the arrangements. Steps were cut into the rock, making the complex accessible via a bridge from the nearby plateau. During World War II the site was bombed.[citation needed] Many art treasures were stolen.[citation needed]
Until the 17th century, the primary means of conveying goods and people from these eyries was by means of baskets and ropes.[9]
Six of the monasteries remain today.[7] Of these six, four were inhabited by men, and two by women. Each monastery has fewer than 10 inhabitants. The monasteries are now tourist attractions.

We booked a sunset tour with Bay Voyager on their rigid hull inflatable, and it was such a blast! Our captain was skilled and knowledgeable, pointing out many different landmarks, recounting local lore, and all the while handling the boat flawlessly through some pretty good sized, but exciting, chop.

The MetLife Building, formerly and way better known as Pan Am Building, towers over Park Avenue just north of Grand Central Terminal. One can see here the southeast corner of the building, which opened in 1963 as at the time largest commercial office building in the world. Designed by Emery Roth & Sons with the assistance of Walter Gropius and Pietro Belluschi, the Pan Am Building is an example of an International style skyscraper. As an iconic New York landmark, the building has been seen in a few films such as Coogan's Bluff, Armageddon, Catch Me If You Can, Godzilla, Knowing, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The building is seen in the video game Grand Theft Auto IV as a parody called the GetaLife Building, and in the game Crysis 2, in which it is hit by alien artillary fire and collapses onto Grand Central Terminal. The building once provided helicopter service to John F. Kennedy International Airport, a seven-minute flight that left from the rooftop helipad. This service was offered from 1965 1968, by New York Airways and for a few months in 1977. It ended after a major accident that killed five people. (More about all this on Wikipedia.)
