100 Strangers

This is Leanne. As with all(4)of my Strangers from the Genesee Country Village and Museum Civil War Re-enactment Weekend, Leanne has been a re-enactor for many years. She told me both she and her husband participate in re-enactments and most of their weekends are taken with this hobby. It was a pleasure meeting Leanne and chatting about the Re-enactment weekend at Genesee Country Village and Museum. Thanks Leanne! One early morning, I headed to the flower mart downtown and bumped into Alfred on the street. Well, not acutally bumped into him but he began to ask for directions. He had this piece of paper that had been folded for sometime. He was looking for a street that I think was in Hollywood but couldn't be exact. He said he asked the security guys on bikes, a cab driver and they did not know either. I suggested he ask the next bus driver. I told him I was sorry I could not help and he was really sweet and said no problems. He did not have a phone number but just the address of a family friend that he wanted to get to. Alfred was from out of state, had no knowledge of the LA area. Alfred began to tell me he was let out of jail at 2:30am in the morning with no money and no where to go. He could not believe that they would let someone out at that time of the morning on the streets. I unfortunately can. I have heard the stories too many times. Alfred did not ask for anything, but I did. I asked for a photo. He said no problem and just asked if I would pray for him. I have no idea what he was picked up on or what his story was but I do know he was kind, lost, and no where to go. I put a few bucks in his hand and walked away. I hope Alfred found his way.

I finally did it, I took the 100 stranger plunge... I’ve been hesitating for several reasons BUT, this morning it was meant to be.

I was shooting some pics along a quite road and pulled over next to a busted up mailbox

to take a few more when this lady pulled up in a truck and parked right in front of my shot!

Needless to say, I was irritated. Here I am in the middle nowhere (well, almost) and this

lady decides to pull up next to me?

I got out my car curious to see what she did next and then she asked if I was stranded. This nice lady had seen me squating on the ground and thought I was trying to get cell reception! LOL

I told her I was just taking pictures but was so touched that she turned around and came back to help me.

Then, I told her about the 100 stranger project and that I had been wanting to try it and would she be my first?

She was more than happy to.

Her name is Paula and she drives down this road 3 times a week for light treatments at Kaiser. I should have asked her what those are but I didn’t want to be too nosy.

After the fact, I kicked myself for not putting the camera into ProFocus mode. This blurs the background even more than normal and sharpens up the subject just a bit.

Either way, I am happy to have finally started!

100 Water Houses was created especially for the Threads of Change exhibition and since the idea was to use recycled textiles I was excited by being able to call upon all the wonderful fabrics I've been collecting from thrift shops for the last couple of years.

These are reference images I'm using to test my new Velvia 100 RVP Film Simulation presets.

It's pretty well nailed down. With DMAX increases to Greens and Reds, and careful attention to how Velvia F used to make Reds orange and Yellows green, I made the adjustsments to reflect with known parameters of Velvia 100 RVP.

Like RVP, lighting conditions, exposures and subjects work differently with this simulation, but I used this reference set of 16 images to really stress test the preset.

In some cases, only two of the sliders need to be adjusted to suit the shooting conditions which are Exposure and White settings.

White balance needs to be adjusted manually. RVP tends to have a coolish tendency to it's images (which kind of makes sense because projector lights tended to be warmer.

White balancing with this preset requires you find your optimal results and then pull back towards cool just a little bit.

I met Antonia near the Westgate Shopping Centre in Oxford and she kindly agreed to be part of my 100 Strangers project. Antonia is from Maidenhead in Berkshire and is a 3rd year Maths student at Hertford College. I tentatively asked what aspect of mathematics did she particularly liked and she replied Applied Maths. That just about exhausted my repertoire of maths-related questions! She didn't have any definite career in mind. I joked that with a degree from Oxford she might like to run the country, but she thought that this was unlikely. If you see this photo, Antonia, please tell me what you think of it. I hope you like it.

2009 Thanksgiving Cruise

I took my camera to the Union Square Holiday Market to photograph some strangers, but had been turned down a few times, when I noticed her purple hair. She agreed to be a part of my project, but we couldn't chat very much since customers approached her stall. I took a few photos, and continued on.

I plan to go back in the next few days and learn more about her!

Edit: I went back twice to ask her name, but she had lots of people in her stall. I thought it best to not disturb her.
