After two years, I have just realized the 100th portrait of my project...

On Saturday afternoon in Cabourg, we walked, when my wife found on the pavement a mobile phone. We called one of the numbers in memory, and the woman who answered was able to warn the owner of the telephone, whom we met in the place of our discovery.

We spent a moment very pleasant to discuss. I told her that I liked very much her hat, then I asked her if I could do her portrait for my project, what she accepted at once with the biggest kindness.

Rosalie is dashing, smiling, charming, sparkling all this at the same time! She comes from Louvecienne and spend this weekend in Cabourg, just like us, and as a lot of people with this good weather...

We also spoke about music, and more particularly about singing, because she adores singing, a habit which her parents gave her when she was young.

I could not dream about a more beautiful meeting to enclose the first part of this project of photos, because yes, there will be other unknowns!

It had been raining all day; the cool damp air held whispers of autumn and the streets were notably less populated. After half an hour camped on a corner photographing people wandering by, I grew restless and had to move on. These past few months have taught me to walk slowly and pay attention because you never know when something will happen. I noticed a flash of bright red hair, and despite my misgivings about train stations, approached the woman as she sat awaiting her train.

This is Alyssa. She gave me a wide smile and agreed without hesitation: I’m always pleased when my request is so enthusiastically met. We talked briefly, before she eagerly inquired what I needed her to do, so I moved her in front of a less distracting background. The light was soft but flat due to the overcast weather, but fortunately Alyssa’s deep red hair and green eyeshadow provided a touch of drama. I discovered that Alyssa is an apprentice tattoo artist, so I showed her a photo of Sam (073),and asked a bit more about tattooing the palms of the hand. This launched into a conversation about tattoos and the process of her becoming a tattoo artist. Alyssa then showed me some of her personal artwork, a gesture that I really appreciate, and we became two artists sharing a passion for our work.

Thank you Alyssa for your time and for teaching me about your craft, it was awesome.

I choose to tone this slightly green to tie into Alyssa eye shadow and continue on with the cinema look.

Exactly one year after starting the 100 Strangers project I went on the prowl for stranger 100 today - my target to complete the project within 1 year was 13:51:53 and I found my #100 with a little under one hour to spare. I had a couple of ideas how I wanted to close my project and I was delighted to find my stranger happy to partake in both ideas - one requiring a bit of technical mucking about by me and one quite cheesy.

That stranger was Steph - an education consultant which basically means that she finds jobs for teachers. I don't often ask much about people's jobs any more, realising that most of the time they are on their lunch and therefore enjoying a break from work so instead I moved onto what Steph likes to do outside work.

Steph enjoys socialising, how often does that one crop up ;), and going to the cinema to watch all sorts, action / adventure / chick flicks ... and most recently The Hunger Games - most definitely not a chick flick!

Steph also enjoys going out for nice meals with her fiance ... who will be her husband in 10 weeks time! Steph has just come back from her hen night and although everyone had a great time and survived, they are also full of the cold - it didn't show though. After the big day Steph and her husband will be honeymooning in Cuba.

For my 100 Stranger finale I couldn't possibly fail to ask my maddest thing question and yet again "falling" featured as Steph has bungee jumped three times in New Zealand and sky-dived once in Australia.

Whilst chatting to Steph I took the opportunity to dig out an Agfa Isolette II that I have been carrying with me for weeks now and so began my technical mucking about ... first I switched my DSLR to ISO400 to match what I hoped was in the camera then used it to take a meter reading in shutter priority @ 1/200 which is the fastest the Isolette could manage ... I dialled in the settings on the Isolette and clicked the shutter ... nothing - I'd forgotten to wind the film on (the recommended approach with the Isolette is to wind on the film before taking a shot, not after). So I wound the film on and tried again ... still nothing - this time I had forgotten to cock the shutter so all that I achieved was to lock the shutter again. So I tripped the shutter using the manual override but after all that I wanted a clean no mistakes shot so I wound the film on, cocked the shutter and finally took a photo in a manner that suggested I knew what I was doing. Steph's smile did not falter at any point throughout this and it was great to be able to point the camera at her and not have to worry about timing my shot with a smile as well.

Taking advantage of the good nature of my final stranger I now dug out a poster that I had prepared comprising my previous 99 strangers - I knew I would get glare from the laminated sheet but nonetheless I achieved my basic aim of taking a single shot with all 100 of my strangers in it - corny I know but I like it!

Making my final analogue error of the day I thanked Steph and explained that her photograph would be available tonight ... completely forgetting that I would first need to wait to get the film developed. With that I disappeared and took a few snaps with the Isolette to use the film up and handed it in to be developed - only 2 weeks to wait to see if the film shot is in any way usable.

Steph, thanks very much for helping me with my project today - I was lucky to find someone so obliging and comfortable in front of the camera (2 in fact). I hope your big day is everything you hope for and that you enjoy your honeymoon - I bet that Cuba is a beautiful and interesting country.

And so ends my 100 Strangers project. First up I would like to thank everyone that has helped me on my journey - all 100 strangers that have taken part (and also those that turned me down but nonetheless stopped to listen) plus everyone on this group and amongst my contacts and the wider Flickr community that has encouraged me and provided help and advice throughout. I have learned many things even though I still fail to put several into practice but I have grown comfortable with the project and I have enjoyed many many conversations with an incredible, diverse and interesting group of people.

Putting my project aside I have greatly enjoyed following other's projects and will continue to do so - there are so many fascinating stories on here and a wealth of styles and approaches to enjoy. I think this is also the right point to thank the moderators for all their hard work keeping the group true to its ideals.

To anyone just starting out I hope that you enjoy the project as much as I did - it took all my courage to approach my #1 but I'm glad that I did and I settled into the project quite quickly and it really has been the most amazing experience. To anyone struggling to get started - 10 seconds of courage is all that it takes - just do it!

If anyone cares to indulge me and is willing to donate a little time, I would love to know what people's personal favourites amongst my project are.

Thank you.

Ivor

Close Clones..

This isn't exactly what I had pictured in my mind, original intentions were to do 100 clones, in a panorama long exposure....

Its tough. 10 seconds is not that much time. and figuring out 5 clones is a challenge. Unfortunately i believe i threw in the towel around 75 clones. and only 69 made the cut....31 short of my goal. its all i had, i was tired and coughing like a bonzai

I thought of this idea last friday while driving home, and most of the time when I think of something, I need to do it. so at least i put forth a valid attempt today.

Ironically Mr. PUMA :D did the same idea and luckily for him he was only on day 50.

Sorry for the wait, and if the "anticipation" bothered you i do apologize, and Sorry for not living up to the Hype...bit off a little more than i could chew.

beyond the clone-ing all is SOOC

When I met Jazz (77/100) there was guy with her who was getting putting some stuff in his car. He sorta look on when I first talked to Jazz slightly less enthused about what was going on I think.

After I explained myself and began to take the shots he seemed more interested and I asks him if he'd pose for a portrait as well.

I was really glad that he agreed - that is how I met Gaz. Gaz is also a dancer. I liked his bright top and the OBEY cap - I used to skate when I was younger and have always liked Obey street wear.

Thanks for agreeing to the shots Gaz.

I met this man and his family while working on my 100 Strangers Project at the National Mall in Washington, DC. I had been telling the people who posed for me to make a serious face, to not smile. So I had this guy pose for a very serious portrait when he joked that he should give me his daughters phone number in Columbia. He started laughing and I still had my camera up so I just kept shooting. It ended up being one of my favorite images.

Today was the long awaited 100 Stranger Photographer's meet up in London. I arrived a little early and went off in search of a suitable stranger so that I could make sure that I had at least one in the bag before I met up with everyone else.

Emily was walking fast when I spotted her and I had to vector in on her fast before she got away. I've been looking for a subject with bright red lipstick for some time now and she was perfect! I asked if I could take a picture and she said yes as long as I was quick as she was in a hurry. No problem: I took the picture, thanked her and wished her well.

Thanks Emily, I hope you like the picture.

100 things about me #7

I seem to be letting the beard just grow unfettered lately, and it's getting white, which makes me look like I do documentaries on life in the antarctic.

There have been very few times in my adult life when I've been without some form of facial hair, though.

But, I hate doing self-portraits. Plus, I look weird without my glasses on.

Possible moonpool module build. Final would be very yellow, tiled, smooth. Gaps filled. Industrial. This is lifted from dave eaton's dodecahedron model.

Will have 3 flared out entrances to moonpool and a connection to the standardized tubes that will hook the 3 modules to the seatower hub.

Immediately after the session with Nadine (#002) Susanne took her place and we continued shooting.

..

Susanne works as a consultant for business development in a big enterprise and gives the impression of a tough business woman, who knows what she wants. But when she smiles relaxed her eyes are shining bright - I hope the chosen picture gives an impression of the effect, which triggered my fotographic mind.

I was pleased that the two were spontaneously willing to participate in my photo project and I hope they enjoyed the short shooting and the results.

***

Charlotte: was my 4th stranger photo. Just something about her stood out. My approach line was.... 'It's your lucky day, I'm doing street photography of good looking people and I've pick you out, as everyone else looks inbred'.

She took a really nice photo too, didn't get anymore info.. sorry :(

Her hair colour and make up made me want to photo her. I'm glad she allowed me to, as I think this is a really good photo.

Sonic Youth - 100%

I can never forget you - the way you rock the girls

They move a world and love you - a blast in the underworld

I stick a knife in my head - thinking 'bout your eyes

But now that you been shot dead - I've got a new surprise

I been waitin' for you just to say

He's off to check his mind

But all I know is you got no money

But that's got nothing to do with a good time

Can you forgive the boy who - shot you in the head

Or should you get a gun and - go and get revenge?

A 100% of my love - up to you true star

It's hard to believe you took off - I always thought you'd go far

But I've been around the world a million times

And all you men are slime

It's goin' to my head, goodbye I am dead

Wastewood rockers is time for cryin', hey!

Living near a park meant that I was really keen to get a 100 strangers portrait making the most of the autumn colours. In addition I have recently been trying to adopt a more thoughtful approach in my use of colours (some successful and some not so).

In any case, I had been reading a series on composition by the street photographer Eric Kim and specifically wanted to use colour wheel theory in line with the Autumn hues.

Although there were a number of colours I could use, purple/mauve was the holy grail. Now all I had to do was find my purple clothed (or purple haired) stranger. Easier said than done. Greenwich park is a very popular park with lots of tourist visiting. However, after 3 trips and 5 hours of waiting, that perfect stranger was proving elusive. By now I was getting nervous that all the leaves would disappear from the trees.

On my 4th trip I hit gold (or purple :-) ). The location I had in my mind was no longer useable as the leaves had gone but there were still other spots I could use.

Vanessa was on her way to Royal Navel museum with her mum and as soon as I saw her scarf and hat combo I knew that she was the one.

Thankfully she agreed to a shot and I took took her to the spot I had in mind. I shot a few with and without the reflector and am generally pleased with how this came out.

Vanessa lives nearby and had only moved there recently with her partner. Her partner was interested in photography and was looking for a course and I recommended a few options. When I asked her mum's name she said "Vanessa's mum"

Reggie

You can tell from the photo that this gentleman looked too interesting to not ask to make his portrait. I had seen him from the inside of the restaurant; I came back to ask to make his portrait. He saw me walking up, took off his headphones, shook my hand. I introduced myself through shaking hands, and asked if I could make his portrait. He asked why, and I said he just looked really cool.

Of course, he wanted to give me a hard time (which was well worth it and in good fun!). He wanted to know something that he didn't know about me, and I said I spoke two languages. He asked where I was from and I said Puerto Rico. Reggie then said sure, and put the headphones back on. I asked him if he could look into my camera, and he said I was pushing it now. But he did, and said I only had one shot. This was my one shot and it seemed like he liked it. I know I did, and I feel so good to be starting this project!

Thanks Reggie!
