Pioneer Sergeant.

Pioneer Sergeant.

He is the Pioneer Sergeant of the 73rd Regiment of Foot and he is wearing the uniform that was worn in the era circa early 1800’s.

As a Pioneer Sergeant which incidentally is not a rank but it rather an appointment and it is only applicable to an infantry regiment.

Being the largest man in the regiment was a good indicator that you would be or already were appointed the Pioneer Sergeant and the reason being was that it was your role to act as the carpenter, joiner and also as the regimental blacksmith.

Hence the beard, the Pioneer Sergeant was allowed to grow a beard and the reason being was that it would offer some protection to his face whilst he was working the forge.

However this Pioneer Sergeant does little of those assigned tasking as he is a member of the 73rd Regiment of Foot re-enactment society which boasts societies around Australia and as such has a very extensive membership.

The 73rd made an appearance at the Back to Belgenny weekend which was held on 17th August 2024 and the historic Macarthur farm where the regiment participated in a number of activities which related to their past.

Included was a mock battle which enabled spectators to again a much great insight into the art of warfare from the early 19th century.
