I think the most striking aspect of the numerous Civil War reenactments in the Washington DC area is the people who make them happen. The foot soldiers, POW's and officers make history come alive, and they do it for the pure joy of feeling the history.

This collage is from my very enjoyable visit to Ft. McHenry with my son and our Flickr friend Toshio .

Must have enjoyed it - either that or the thought of the beer tent was causing the broad grin...

During a Namahage reenactment at the Oga Shinzan Folklore Museum on the Oga Peninsula near Akita, Japan, a pair of demonic ogres are placated with sake and food. The aim is to promote health, good luck, and an abundant crop of cereals.

A confederate reenactor sets camp for the night, prior to the next day's battle, in a demonstration of how many soldiers had very minimal shelter. The Battle of Fredericksburg, fought in December 1862, had brutally cold sub-freezing temperatures, just as it was during this reenactment/picture. the battle of tewkesbury 1471

The Battle of Tewkesbury, which took place on 4 May 1471, was one of the decisive battles of the Wars of the Roses. The forces loyal to the House of Lancaster were completely defeated by those of the rival House of York under their monarch, King Edward IV. The Lancastrian heir to the throne, Edward, Prince of Wales, and many prominent Lancastrian nobles were killed during the battle or were dragged from sanctuary two days later and immediately executed. The Lancastrian king, Henry VI, who was a prisoner in the Tower of London, died or was murdered shortly after the battle. Tewkesbury restored political stability to England until the death of Edward IV in 1483.
