The Hawkesbury is the area that our first settlers made homes in Australia this is the wonderful river they lived by. From here inland the water is fresh.

Small gray gull with red legs. Adult has red bill (younger birds have a darker bill), white head and body, pale gray "silver" wings, which have prominent black and white tips. Abundant across much of New Zealand and coastal Australia, including inland areas around waterways and rivers. (eBird)

The first bird I photographed in Australia. They were everywhere around the quay, looking for food, calling loudly and generally being gulls.

Winter blooming succulent. It is a genus of about 125 species of tropical, succulent flowering plants in the family Crassulaceae, mainly native to Madagascar and tropical Africa. Kalanchoe was one of the first plants to be sent into space, sent on a resupply to the Soviet Salyut 1 space station in 1971. Most are shrubs or perennial herbaceous plants, but a few are annual or biennial. The largest, Kalanchoe beharensis from Madagascar, can reach 6 m tall, but most species are less than 1 m tall. Kalanchoes are characterized by opening their flowers by growing new cells on the inner surface of the petals to force them outwards, and on the outside of the petals to close them. Kalanchoe flowers are divided into 4 sections with 8 stamens. The petals are fused into a tube, in a similar way to some related genera such as Cotyledon. 25026

The Australian magpie (Gymnorhina tibicen) is a medium-sized black and white passerine bird native to Australia and southern New Guinea. Although once considered to be three separate species, it is now considered to be one, with nine recognised subspecies. A member of the Artamidae, the Australian magpie is placed in its own genus and is most closely related to the black butcherbird (Melloria quoyi). Currawongs have yellow eyes, whereas Magpies have red-brown eyes and Butcherbirds have very dark brown, almost black eyes. It is not, however, closely related to the European magpie, which is a corvid. The adult Australian magpie is a fairly robust bird ranging from 37 to 43 cm in length, with distinctive black and white plumage, gold brown eyes and a solid wedge-shaped bluish-white and black bill. The male and female are similar in appearance, and can be distinguished by differences in back markings. The male has pure white feathers on the back of the head and the female has white blending to grey feathers on the back of the head. With its long legs, the Australian magpie walks rather than waddles or hops and spends much time on the ground. Described as one of Australia's most accomplished songbirds, the Australian magpie has an array of complex vocalisations. It is omnivorous, with the bulk of its varied diet made up of invertebrates. It is generally sedentary and territorial throughout its range. Common and widespread, it has adapted well to human habitation and is a familiar bird of parks, gardens and farmland in Australia and New Guinea. This species is commonly fed by households around the country, but in spring (and occasionally in autumn) a small minority of breeding magpies (almost always males) become aggressive and swoop and attack those who approach their nests. 6966

CLF1, C501, 852, S303, 4908 and CLF4 work 4MC5 empty grain through The Rock to Uranquinty so they can run around and return to the loader for The Rock on the Boree Creek Line.

Alot of people ask why is the place called "The Rock" well it is hard to include it in a photo, but at the right time of year and right time of day it can be shown and what better train to do that with. I've had my eye on this shot for many years since seeing a photo of an XPT passing through on sunrise, back in the Riverina XPT days. These days no trains are timetabled past here regularly at the right time, so to score an adhoc here was pretty good with CLF1 leading aswell. The SSR standard livery wears so nicely on the Streamliner shape bodies.

Bondi Beach in Australia just south of Sydney has got to be the one at the top. Just goes on for miles. As you can see this was high season - i was prepared to use my megaphone and yell "SHARK, POISONOUS OCTOPUS, POISONOUS JELLFISH, STINGRAY" to clear the beach but it would have made no difference to these people. I suspect high season is Christmas in Australia - and instead of shoveling snow they are playing in the sand in their bathing suits. Stoic people enduring all this.

Gerbera L. is a genus of plants in the Asteraceae (daisy family). Gerbera is native to tropical regions of South America, Africa and Asia. Gerbera species bear a large capitulum with striking, two-lipped ray florets in yellow, orange, white, pink or red colours. The capitulum, which has the appearance of a single flower, is actually composed of hundreds of individual flowers. The morphology of the flowers varies depending on their position in the capitulum. The flower heads can be as small as 7 cm (Gerbera mini 'Harley') in diameter or up to 12 cm (Gerbera ‘Golden Serena’). Gerbera is very popular and widely used as a decorative garden plant or as cut flowers. 10324
