Robert Burr Smith Band of Brothers
Paratrooper Robert Burr Smith was an NCO and one of the original 140 Toccoa men of Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, in the 101st Airborne Division. His first combat jump into Normandy on D-Day was nearly his last…
Smith was a T/4 rank when Easy Company prepared to jump into France in the early morning hours of June 6th. Just a few seconds before take-off in England, Smith and Paratrooper Joe Hogan were taken from the Easy Company HQ aircraft and placed on the next plane in line….much to their dismay. The pair would soon become the only two survivors of Easy’s HQ Company.
As Stick #66 approached their drop zone, the aircraft exploded from a direct hit while crossing the French coast, killing the Company’s Headquarters section including their new commmading officer, Lieutenant Thomas Meehan, and three of its most senior non-commissioned officers: First Sergeant Bill Evans, Staff Sergeant Murray Roberts, and Sergeant Elmer Murray. In total, 17 men of Easy Company would be lost in the downed C-47.
As Smith recalled later in life, “I, better then anyone alive, know the story of the lost aircraft. I served with Company HQ for many months prior to D-Day and knew each and every member of that section, personally and closely. We lived together in a Quonset in Aldbourne. My special buddy was Elmer "Moe" Murray, the operations sergeant. We served together at the divisional jump school at Chilton, Foliat in the months before Normandy and we were great friends.”
The 746th FEAF Band recorded the only known album by a frontline band unit in the jungles of the Pacific. Stream the music of front line WW2 on Spotify and Apple Music or download a digital copy of the album for free on the band website. Streaming is free….freedom is not.
