In 1908, the DĂĽsseldorf-based Central-trade-ssociation for Rhineland, Westphalia and neighbouring districts praised a competition for a fountain in front of the DĂĽsseldorf Art Palace.

As a "figurative representation of the iron industry and the mining industry," it was to be sent to the 1902 on the site on the banks of the Rhine (then Kaiser Wilhelm Park, now Rheinpark) the industrial and commercial exhibition was held.

Among the 44 designs submitted, the jury, which was prominently occupied by the painter Fritz Roeber, the painter Georg Oeder, the architect Wilhelm Kreis and the DĂĽsseldorf garden director Walter von Engelhardt, was Prize awarded, so also do not recommend a design for execution. It was initially planned to give the authors of the shortlisted drafts the opportunity to revise them in a second stage of competition (a closer competition).

The fountain was built in its original form between 1911 and 1913. While the DĂĽsseldorf architect Gotthold Nestler designed the actual well complex, the sculptor Friedrich Coubillier created the three bronze figures "Schmied Vulkan," "Bergmann" and "HĂĽttenarbeiter." Miner and cottage worker are depicted in the loincloth. The bronze casting of the figures took place at the KunstgieĂźerei Lauchhammer.

On the occasion of the opening of the Grand Art Exhibition in 1913, the industrial fountain in front of the former Art Palace was inaugurated. In 1925 the fountain was dismantled there because of the extensive new buildings at the Ehrenhof.

In 1939, the three sculptures were erected in a new facility on FĂĽrstenplatz in Friedrichstadt. In 1942 the figures were to be melted down as metal donations by the German people for armaments and were removed. However, they remained intact, and in 1950 they were restored.

The Externsteine is a distinctive sandstone rock formation located in the Teutoburg Forest, in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The formation consists of several tall, narrow columns of rock which rise abruptly from the surrounding wooded hills.

The site draws about a million visitors a year, for a variety of reasons. Most are tourists who come to admire the beauty of the majestic rock formations that jut out from the flat, forested landscape.

But it is not only a geological curiosity, Externsteine is also reputed to be an ancient and sacred palaeolithic worshiping ground, and an astronomical calendar. Therefore, Externsteine became a mecca for Neo-pagans, Neo-Nazis and neo-pagan-Nazis.

The pagan ceremonies held at Externsteine take place three times a year: on the longest day of the year ‏(June 21‏), the shortest day of the year ‏(December 21‏) and on Walpurgis Night ‏(“Night of the Witches”‏) on April 30.

Beautiful old pier of Sellin

A Renaissance highlight in the Southwest of Germany.

Set in the scenic landscape of the Tauber valley, Weikersheim Palace (Schloss Weikersheim) lies at the heart of the small town of Weikersheim.

With its beautiful garden, the palace embodies the Renaissance ideal of a country estate. In 1586, Count Wolfgang of Hohenlohe took up residence in the former moated castle, and promptly ordered the construction of a new palace. With an unusual three-sided floorplan, the palace reflected the Renaissance style of the time, but foreshadowed the Baroque era that was to come.

The most distinctive feature of the palace grounds is the many Baroque statues that populate the garden.

A few weeks ago I was in the Black Forest and a colleague came there from Switzerland. Together we photographed the night sky from the Feldberg. The yellow-orange light you see below is not a sunset nor a sunrise, it is the heavy light pollution that we have here in Germany.

(The human eye doesn't perceive this as strongly as a camera.)

The St Peter's Dom (German: Wormser Dom, Worm's cathedral) is a highrising church in Worms, southern Germany. It was built from about 1130 to 1181. It houses the tombs of Emperor Conrad's II family and also got its status as imperial cathedral because of its size and glory. The Dom is located on the highest point of the inner city of Worms and is the most important building of the romanesque style in Worms.

This view is on the north-east side.

The photo is taken from the market place and the so-called Siegfriedbrunnen can be seen as well, the Siegfried-fountain.
