Nestled in forest at 600 metres above sea‐level, the Château du Théret was built to control and tax the passage of salt to the Loire Valley and Paris and considerably extended during the reign of Louis 14th. It is reached on foot down a long drive flanked by dry stone walls, and surrounded by a moat, giving the impression that you are leaving the 21st century behind as you approach. It is currently in private hands, being slowly and authentically restored with a view to opening to the public “eventually”. The nearby wolf‐park provides a reminder that this area was inhabited by wild wolves as recently as 1901, when the last was trapped at Théret.
Downtown Dallas’ Chase Tower is reflected in the windows of the north tower of the adjacent Plaza of the Americas.
As DBS Tug 60100 disappears towards Lostock Works in Northwich on this placid wintry afternoon, it's hard not to reflect on whether this may be one of the last times we see them down this way given the rumoured mothballing of these fine machines.
Or maybe it's a mere dream .........?

The Laugavegur is a famous trekking route in South-West Iceland from the hot springs area of Landmannalaugar to the glacial valley of Þórsmörk . It is noted for the wide variety of landscapes on its 55 km (34 mi) path. The route is typically completed over 2–4 days with potential stops at the mountain huts at Hrafntinnusker, Álftavatn, Hvanngil and Emstrur. An ultramarathon is held on the route each July. It is possible to combine the trek with the Fimmvörðuháls route which goes over the pass from Þórsmörk to Skógar for an additional one or two days or an additional 25 km (16 mi). Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk, and Skógar are all reachable by bus during the summer. A bus from Hella connects with Álftavatn once a day during the summer.

On the path from le Plan de l'Aiguille to Montenvers, there is a bifurcation to the right leading to le Signal Forbes, which offers an exceptional point of view on la Mer de Glace. Here, this view has been captured on the way down from le Signal Forbes to Montenvers. More at www.flickr.com/photos/132192297@N04/albums/72157653597089933.
