Castell is a municipality in Unterfranken, Bavaria in Germany.
Its history is closely connected to the Counts of "Castell zu Castell"
whose seat still remains there.
The origins of the Castell family can be traced back to the year 1057. Rupert de Castello was the first ancestor to be mentioned in archives. The oldest record of the family’s right to bear the title of Count is found in a royal charter of 1202. The Castell family was an influential force and reigned over a number of well-known places in Franconia. In 1901, the Count of Castell was promoted to the Prince of Castell, demonstrating the recognition of Castell by the royal family of the Wittelsbacher (Bavaria).
Following World War II, Albrecht Prince of Castell-Castell (being only 20 years of age) took over the responsibility for the family and business side and developed – among other things – the Domänenamt to one of Germany’s largest private wineries. Nowadays, Prince Castell is the head of the family, while his son Erbgraf Ferdinand (Hereditary Count) manages the winery and all other business ventures.

Goldener Herbst in Unterfranken (2)

Every evening there are some people sitting on the bridge truss, enjoying the sunset and the following dusk...
When looking in the other direction, one may admire the maze of tracks leading to the Hauptbahnhof (central station).

A.k.a. Night light snakes or in other words light trails. :-D Image taken along Siel-Einsteigehäuschen from atop the Elbpromade in Hamburg.
A female Downy Woodpecker lacks the red area on the back of her head that is found on the male Downy. But she is quite strikingly patterned (as is the male Downy) with black and white feathers.
Actually not. This is a Douglas C-47 Skytrain mounted above the roof terrace of the Deutsches Technikmuseum (German Museum of Technology).
This particular C-47 was delivered to the USAF in 1945 and was initially used by the weather service based on Jamaica.
From 1962 to 1977 it was used by the Spanish Air Force, in 1986 it went back to the USAF, who displayed it on Tempelhof Airport to remember the Berlin Air Lift.
In 1994 it was handed over to the Deutsches Technikmuseum.

Buckingham Fountain is a Chicago landmark in the center of Grant Park. Dedicated in 1927, it is one of the largest fountains in the world. Built in a rococo wedding cake style and inspired by the Latona Fountain at the Palace of Versailles, it is meant to allegorically represent Lake Michigan. It operates from April to October, with regular water shows and evening color-light shows. During the winter, the fountain is decorated with festival lights.
I've photographed this scene a number of times but this was the first time at night. It was taken amongst the tumbled rocks on the River Massan in Glen Massan. I'm well used to wee accidents during my night photography sessions and this one was no different ... a slip on some wet rocks resulted in a few thorns in my hand, but I managed to keep out of the water :)
Northern Red-billed Hornbill (Tockus erythrorhynchus). Hornbills are noisy, conspicuous birds easily distinguished by their bold black and white feather patterns, accented by long, colorful bills and patches of bare skin around the eyes or throat. Their first two neck vertebrae are fused to support their large bill. Samburu National Reserve, Kenya.

Part two of the whimbrel squabble over a sand crab. The indignant one on the left is the one that originally dug up the crab from the sand and the one doing the snatching is the interloper.
