The riders of the Tour the France are certainly not the only ones that attracted attention. The charming staff of the publicity 'caravane' 'did that too, throwing all kinds of publicity material at the public ready to catch it.

The making of the Public Art Depot for the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen (MVRDV architects), featuring exhibition halls, a sculpture roof garden and a restaurant, in addition to an enormous amount of storage space for art. The public can see what’s going on behind the scenes in a museum and private art collectors will be able to store their own collection under ideal museum conditions. The design – a reflective round volume – responds to its surroundings, the Rotterdam’s Museumpark. The building will be completed in 2020, doors will open in 2021.

On several occasions, I’ve told you about the Kop van Zuid urban restructuring zone. To recap: it was once an industrial harbour zone and in some 30 years it’s redeveloped into a mixed recreation/commercial/living quarter. The urbanistic background: the harbour & industry had moved west ‘cause of the containerization of freight and the city needed space ánd an upmarket ‘second city centre’ on the south bank of the Maas.

Shown here is the partly glass façade of an apartment building on the Vuurplaat. Vuurplaat means footplate. From there - in the days of steam - the driver and fireman fed and controlled the locomotive.

Europee, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rottrdam, Wilhelminapier, Zorgheld, Stad met een hart, Marcel Labrie, Aida Aura (cut from all sides)

This statue (City with a hart-Marcel Labrie) and his mates are placed throughout Rotterdam) and aim to express appreciation for the health care employees & to motivate young people to choose the care sector. Rotterdam artists painted them, including Tymon de Laat, Marcel Labrie, Vera Nederlof and Robert van der Kroft. Three statues were painted by young people from Rotterdam.

All the statues images will be auctioned off at the end of June. The proceeds will be used to encourage young people to work in healthcare. The statues are also available in statuette form and will be sold in some shops in the Koopgoot (Beurstraverse) in Rotterdam.

In the BG is another sculpture (representing smoke stacks- one of the art works on the Wilhelminapier, referencing its history as the former location of the head office and workshops of the Holland-America Line, transatlantic shipping company) and the Aida cruise ship, the Aura.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid,, Bower vine (slightly cut)

Here in Holand, we call this 'trompletbloem' (Pandorea jasminoides). Behind it the plane trees of our dike. "It is a woody climber with pinnate leaves that have three to nine egg-shaped leaflets, and white or pink trumpet-shaped flowers that are red and hairy inside." Source Wiki.

We imported this one from the Sotavento some 8 years ago and it's going strong. Ah, the changing climate...

A Bower vine flower is here.

Another 'The View' view, this times lookin' almost straight down. The last of this mini-series.

The front part of the street market is flanked by the municipal library and Blaak station. The library (designed by van den Broek & Bakema in 1983) has a roof terrace - the Stadsterras. Blaak station is a multimodal train/metro/tram/ station (Harry Reijnders 1993) and has a characteristic big metal/lexan ‘lid’ (diameter: 35 m, the lid (structural engineer: L. Válkár).

This is number 663 of Rotterdam architecture.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Cool, Tower cranes, Cool tower (slightly cut from all sides).

In Rotterdam, the high rises seem to sprout from each other ;-) In the foreground is a 50s functionalist 'wederopbouw' residential building (begin 50s) with the new Cool tower behind it. All the way in the BG (right) is a sliver of the Coolse Poort.

The CoolTower (Cool is the city district where the tower is being realized) will reach its final height of 154 m in 2022 and will then offer space for approximately 282 apartments.

The construction is a rather complicated process: due to the limited space on and around the construction site, it is not possible to work with large building parts (so little use of prefab elements) and construction takes place on the building floors themselves. And the supply of materials is done via the JIT (just in time) regime, also to be able to guarantee that the nearby fire brigade fire station is hindered as little as possible. Because the Havenziekenhuis (a hospital) is a neighbour, vibrations on the construction site are avoided. The building is realized by Ballast Nedam, the architects are V8.

This is #574 of Rotterdam architecture.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Zuidplen, High rises, Rotterdamse DagenDagen/Bovenop Zuid,, People (uncut)

Captured during the 'Bovenop Zuid' roofwalk on the roof of the ZuidPlein shopping mall.

The walk is street-at rich and fascinating. The artist(collectives) showcased @ Bovenop Zuid are here.

A number of staircases were installed to pass high obstacles. They were also used by security personnel to monitor the goings on and, if necessary, provide assistance.

Dutch Steigers again realized the scaffolding and stairs. The nature of the construction material sometimes adds a fairground type of thrill. The supporting towers are iron, the walkway planks are aluminium, and they sometimes nicely sag a bit while walking on them.

The metallic sculpture on the roof was also displayed at the 2022 edition of the Rotterdam Roofdays.

The context: "In modern cities, miles of unused flat rooftops await a new function. Rotterdam alone has over 18 square kilometres of unused flat roofs. That must change, and the rooftops can provide the space to realize the housing challenge, energy transition, climate change and inclusiveness in cities". Text: from the Dakendagen website.

By the way: Hurry, Bovenop Zuid closes tomorrow (June 30).

This is, for now, the last of this roof walk series and number 11 of Rotterdamse Daken Dagen 2022 & 2023.

Passenger planes generally don’t engage in aerobatics, but climbing out in the sectored (noise contours) Randstad airspace, they sometimes almost have to. Shown here is the river Schie, shot from a sharply banking Transavia B737-700, a minute after take-off from Rotterdam-The Hague airport, on its way to Faro (Algarve-Portugal).
