Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Afrikaanderwijk, Afrikaanderplein, Biological garden (slightly cut from B)
In the middle of the high density Afriaanderwijk is the Biological garden of the quarter. About this garden, by the organization behind the garden:
“Come by for a visit to our special garden: in the middle of the city and yet an oasis. You will find native and exotic plants, original inhabitants and newcomers who feel at home in our climate. Discover our special collection of so-called 'Rotterdam plants': plants that have been blown in and now have a safe place in our garden. Never seen a Mandragora or Black Blue Rapunzel? Come by and let us tell their story.
We are committed to preserving biodiversity. This is important because in the stony environment of the city there is less and less space for plants and insects. Together with other Rotterdam parties such as the Natural History Museum, Arboretum Trompenburg, Diergaarde Blijdorp, Stadskwekerij de Kas, Rotterdamse Munt, Stichting Natuurstad and Stichting Steensoep, we have united in the Public Platform for Biodiversity. We want to tell Rotterdammers - adults and children - more about biodiversity and the ecosystem in the city and why it is important that we, as people, live together with plants and animals.”

A bollard in the Binnenhaven. It was a very modern harbour for the time, equipped as it was with steam and hydraulic cranes and coal tips. It was realized by the Rotterdamsche Handelsvereeniging (RHV Lodewijk Pincoffs). At the time, the ports (including the Entrepothaven) were avoided by ships if possible because of the quay dues levied by the RHV (which did not occur in the Dutch ports at the time) and the difficult manoeuvring in and out of the harbour. In 1892, the profitable operation was no longer possible and it was taken over by the municipality of Rotterdam.
Nowadays the harbour is partly filled in and used as a berth for yachts and houseboats - often decommissioned tugs, trawlers and pilot/coast guard vessels.
This is number 311 from the Rotterdam Harbour and industry album.

One of the unique selling points of the edifice is the vast roof terrace with its expansive Rotterdam views. Its entrance hall is situated next to the restaurant. In winter blankets/plaids are offered there.
This capture: Behind the Boijmans van Beuningen museum (1937, Bodon and Van der Steur, currently closed due to renovation), the 'brandgrens' (the edge of the part of Rotterdam's centre that was not destroyed during WW2) is still discernable.
This is number 13 of the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen album.
Eorope, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Museumpark, Depot (Boijmans van Beuningen), Art, People
I dare say that a radical building like the Depot only could have been designed by Rotterdam based architecs MVRDV.
It is basically a giant glass clad reinforced concrete bowl that is the depot of the Boijmans van Beuningen museum (which is currently closed due to a renovation). The inside structure of the building is a metal skeleton and many of the walls, ceilings and even some floors are made of laminated glass,

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Coolsingel, Rotterdamse Dakendagen, Passerelle, Dutch Steigers, Winy Maas, MVDRV, People
After returning from a holiday, nothing works better to adapt is taking the role of tourist in your own city.
Shot from the roof of the Beurs (Merchant's exchange) towards Breuer's Bijenkorf building (1957) and IMHO the most spectacular part of the Dakendagen (Roof days) Rotterdamse Dakendagen: the pedestrian bridge passing one of Rotterdams main thoroughfares, the Coolsingel. The scaffolding was realized by Dutch Steigers. The nature of the construction material adds a fair ground-type of thrill. The supporting towers are iron and the planks of the walkway are aluminium, and they sometimes nicely sag a bit while walking over it.
The context: "in modern cities, miles of unused flat rooftops await a new function. In Rotterdam alone there’s over 18 square kilometres of unused flat roofs. That must change, and the rooftops can provide the space to realize the housing challenge, energy transition, climate change and inclusiveness in cities". Text: from the Dakendagen website.

The Rotterdam World Port Days - cancelled in 2020 'cause of the Covid pandemic, a crippled edition (partly online) in 2021 (same reason). And now fully back.
Against the backdrop of the RPA 10 patrol and firefighting vessel of the Rotterdam Port Authority, shown here is a LCVP (Landing Craft Vehicle Personnel) used by the Royal Dutch Navy and the Royal Marines. Its max speed is 25 knots and it's powered by 2 Volvo Penta 0,5 MW engines.
The Royal Navy (including the Marines) is a house guest of the World Port Days.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Overblaak, Kubuswoningen, Blaakse Bos (slightly cut)
The `Kubuswoningen` (Cube houses) aka the `Blaakse Bos` (Blaak forrest) have the phycical appearance of a set of cubes, flipped to one of their vertexes and placed on variable height pillars. It was designed by Dutch architect Piet Blom (1934-1999) who followed his structuralist agenda here, trying to create an integrated urban living space (`Living in an urban roof`' it was called) that both stimulates/facilitates the communal spirit of the dwellers of this urban forest and create a strong rhythmic architectural pattern in the process. In `A structuralist's embrace` here there’s more about Dutch structuralism.
The 7Artisans fisheye was utilized again here. The lens‘ album is here.
For an architecture shot like this, minimalist music is called for, but in this case let’s settle for the basic drumwork of the Cure’s Lol Tolhurst in A forest.

Today (30 November, 2021) on the news: this coal-fired power station (one of biggest polluters of the Netherlands, build in 2015) will be closed, maybe as soon as within the next two months. Necessary for NL to be able to live up to the Paris Agreements. There's three more coal fired power stations to go.

Europe, The Nethelands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Daken Dagen 2022, Bijenkorf roof, Innovative agriculture, People (slightly cut)
One of the goals od the Rotterdam Dakendagen (Roof days) is to make people aware of the many new uses flat roofs can have.
One of these uses is shown here – hydroponic agriculture. It’s not soil based. On the bottom of the tubing is a thin layer of growing media like coconut coir, vermiculite or perlite. Via a drip system water and nutrients are pumped in. The principle is to remove as many barriers as possible between a plant’s root system and the water, oxygen, and nutrients it needs.
The main benefit of hydroponic agriculture is the greatly increased growth rate of most plants. It’s not uncommon for a plant to grow at least 20% faster than in soil. And plants will typically yield at least 25% more than their soil-based counterparts.
In the BG are the Lijnbaan flats, Calypso and a hotel whose name shall not be mentioned.
This number 620 of Rotterdam architecture and 6 of the new Rotterdamse Dakendagen 2002 album.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Den Haag, Amare education & culture centre, muziekgebouw (slightly cropped)
The Amare education & culture building with its 4 concert halls has a delightfully intricate structure to accommodate the concert halls, lobbies, foyers and restaurant.
The building was designed by NOAHH/Patrick Fransen, JCAU/Jo Coenen en NL Architects/Kamiel Klaasse. Jo Coenen left the project prematurely.
The building houses the Dance and Music centre, the Residentie Orchestra, the Dutch Dance Theatre and the Royal Conservatory and actually consists of five separate buildings: the outer shell and four separate boxes - the concert halls. They each have their own foundation to prevent the rest of the complex from being affected by ‘crosstalk’ vibrations of one building hindering the others.
This construction allowed two of the four concert halls to slightly sag. As a result, the doors of one of halls and the hall of the royal conservatory can hardly be closed anymore. As a temporary solution, parts of the floor covering has been removed. Building sinking is by the way a not uncommon thing but sagging isn't. It's problematic since it's happens partially / a-symmetrically.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Hoek van Holland, Hoek van Holland Strand metro station (cut from B&T)
Lookin' at the almost brutalist shape of the new and almost completed new terminus of the former 'Hoekse Lijn', one could think that the architect was inspired by the architecture of the WW2 bunkers that once skirted the Dutch North Sea coast.
The 'Hoekse Lijn' is converted to light-rail and is an integral part of the Rotterdam metro system, exploited by the RET, now. Like the other stations of the line, the terminus was designed by Marc Verheijen. He used colours to create stylistic unity. Along the line he presents the voyager with different shades of yellow. The specific colour scheme of the terminus station shown here is meant to refer to the sunset.
.
A shot of the station's interior, taken a year later, is here.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Wilhelminakade, World Port Days 2022, Aqua Helix (cut from B&T)
Propulsing a sleek but big ship like the Aqua Helix at 40 knots (=74 km/h) is no mean feat. It takes 4 of these MTU (Motoren und Turbinen Union) 20V 4000 M73 twin turbocharged diesel engines. The output of its 20 cylinders in V configuration is 3,6 MW and their total displacement is 83 litres. At full speed the engine consumes 900 l/hour.
