Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Cool, Coolhaven, Little C (uncut)

The ‘rustic’masonry of two of the 15 towers of ‘Little C’ are shown here. And, well, what can I say about the 'Little C Lofts & offices' complex in Rotterdam? For graphically inclined photographers like me it’s surely eye candy. But the architectural choices are debatable. Little C doesn’t aim to be original, it just tries to copy 'New York style' tenements (they do resemble 'The Projects'....) with their external fire staircases and the London Docklands with their sky bridges. While doing this, it follows the contemporary 'red industrial brick paradigm' closely. And it is only a partial solution for the big housing scarcity in Holland since it offers no affordable housing.

Little C consists of 15 towers, connected thru sky bridges. It offers 320 apartments and 10.000 square metres of office space and was designed by CULD and Inbo and is the winner of several architectural prizes, one of them praising the liveability and the social cohesion, so maybe I’m just being a little grumpy here ;-)

This is number 1341 of Minimalism / explicit Graphism.

Eorope, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Museumpark, Het Depot (Boijmans van Beuningen), Art, People (copped from B&T and very slightly cropped from L&R)

I dare say that a radical building like the Depot could only have been designed by Rotterdam based architecs MVRDV.

It is basically a giant glass-clad reinforced concrete bowl that is the depot of the Boijmans van Beuningen museum (which is currently closed due to a renovation). The inside structure of the building is a metal skeleton and many of the walls, ceilings and even some floors are made of laminated glass (not for the faint of heart).

One of the unique selling points of the edifice is the vast roof terrace with its expansive Rotterdam views. Its entrance hall is situated next to the restaurant. In winter blankets/plaids are offered there.

This shot is captured on one of the concrete floors in the atrium towards a stairway and a glass-floored connection bridge (not for the faint of heart) and the elevator shaft. On the right is an excursion group in their ‘lab coats’.

This is number 12 of the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen album.

Trompenburg is a landscaped botanical garden (8 hectares) with a large museum collection of trees, shrubs, perennials, bulbs and tubers. As part of the Hortus Botanic Guardians, the garden contributes to the conservation of tree and plant species and the biodiversity of Rotterdam. Trompenburg houses a unique collection of oaks, over 700 different rhododendrons, the national hosta collection, and more than 100 varieties of holly and has been around since 1850. It started as a country estate - the oldest part of the garden has been laid out in English landscape style. Source: Trompenburg.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Den Haag, Binnenhof, Uitkijktoren (uncut)

The Binnenhof, the seat of the Dutch parliament and senate, is currently being renovated. To enable the public to observe the goings on at the building site, a 28 m high tower has been erected. It has 149 steps and was engineered by Arcadis. It will be there during the renovation, which will be completed by the end of 2028 at the earliest. The structure is engineered so that it can be easily deconstructed and rebuilt at another site.

The tower is surrounded by a wire mesh screen to prevent people from performing (self-)destructive actions.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Centre, Markthal, MVRDV (slightly cut from all sides)

During the realization of the Rotterdam Market Hall (2014) emotions flared. The hall would economically disrupt the nearby street market and mess up sightlines. Well, it probably still does the latter, but it proved to be no problem for the street market - the two customer bases were sufficiently different.

Covered market halls can be found in many cities in the world. But due to the fact that apartments straddle the Rotterdam one, makes is quite unique. The 228 apartments are draped over the market in a horseshoe form. In the hall itself (6200 m2 there are about 100 sales units food stalls and food shops and several restaurants including a supermarket. Design: MVRDV. One of the striking things is the artwork ‘Horn of plenty’ (Horn of Plenty) on the ceiling. It is 11.000 m2 and was designed by Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam.

3D techniques have been used to produce it. To render the huge 1.47 terabyte file, the servers of the Pixar Studios were utilized.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Kralingen, Arboretum Trompenburg, Dahlias (uncut)

"Dahlia is a genus of bushy, tuberous, herbaceous perennial plants native to Mexico and Central America. A member of the Compositae (also called Asteraceae) family of dicotyledonous plants, its garden relatives thus include the sunflower, daisy, chrysanthemum, and zinnia. There are 42 species of dahlia, with hybrids commonly grown as garden plants. Flower forms are variable, with one head per stem; these can be as small as 5 cm (2 in) diameter or up to 30 cm (1 ft) ("dinner plate"). This great variety results from dahlias being octoploids—that is, they have eight sets of homologous chromosomes, whereas most plants have only two. In addition, dahlias also contain many transposons—genetic pieces that move from place to place upon an allele—which contributes to their manifesting such great diversity.

The stems are leafy, ranging in height from as low as 30 cm (12 in) to more than 1.8–2.4 m (6–8 ft). The majority of species do not produce scented flowers. Like most plants that do not attract pollinating insects through scent, they are brightly colored, displaying most hues, with the exception of blue. (Source: Wiki).

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Den Haag, Laakhavens, Haagse Hogeschool, Atrium (uncut)

Shot in the round atrium / central square of the 'Haagse Hogeschool '(University of Higher Professional Education The Hague) in the Laakhavens quarter, a redeveloped industrial quarter in The Hague. The atrium encircles the yellow iconic auditorium.

The building houses some 1,200 teachers and 17.500students. And the atrium is its heart. It has the function of a covered square where the students gather and then find their way to the various education wings and spaces.

The building (1996) was realized in neo-modernist style and designed by Atelier PRO (Hans van Beek, Leon Thier, René Hoek).

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Wilhelminakade, World Port Days 2022, Aqua Helix (uncut)

An Ampelmann system is an offshore personnel transfer system developed from a design dreamed up by young engineers of the Delft University of Technology (the ‘TU – Delft’). Its ramps are telescoping and motion compensated, allowing easy and safe crew access from moving vessels to offshore structures, even in stormy conditions.

The Ampelmann factory can be found at the RDM (Rotterdam) - a former and redeveloped shipyard. You might have guessed that the name is based on the iconic Berlin Ampelmännchen traffic light for pedestrians.

The Amplemann (S type) shown here is mounted on the Aqua Helix, a high-speed crew ship (capacity: 122 passengers), built by Damen Shipyards (check out the previous post).

The making of the Public Art Depot for the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen (MVRDV architects), featuring exhibition halls, a sculpture roof garden and a restaurant, in addition to an enormous amount of storage space for art. The public can see what’s going on behind the scenes in a museum and private art collectors will be able to store their own collection under ideal museum conditions. The design – a reflective round volume – responds to its surroundings, the Rotterdam’s Museumpark. The building will be completed in 2020, doors will open in 2021.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Kop van Zuid, Vuurplaat, Apartmentbuilding, Reflections, Balconies (uncut)

On several occasions, I’ve told you about the Kop van Zuid urban restructuring zone. To recap: it was once an industrial harbour zone and in some 30 years it’s redeveloped into a mixed recreation/commercial/living quarter. The urbanistic background: the harbour & industry had moved west ‘cause of the containerization of freight and the city needed space ánd an upmarket ‘second city centre’ on the south bank of the Maas.

Shown here is the partly glass façade of an apartment building on the Vuurplaat. Vuurplaat means footplate. From there - in the days of steam - the driver and fireman fed and controlled the locomotive.
