Leiden (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈlɛi̯.də(n)] in English and archaic Dutch also Leyden) is a city and municipality in the Dutch province of South Holland.

The island Tiengemeten in the Haringvliet, was originally used for agriculture but has now "been given back to nature". Large parts have been flooded and the isle is part of the National Ecological Network. The last farmer left in 2006.

The Maas estuary existed in Roman times from Helinium, a large estuary at Hellevoetsluis. In the Middle Ages, the Meuse flowed through two branches towards the Maasmond: the Ancient Meuse and the Roman-Medieval Meuse. To the north, the Merwede (along Dordrecht and Rotterdam) flowed the largest part of the Rhine to the sea (but also fed the Meuse). Later the name for Merwede between Slikkerveer and Rozenburg was changed to New Maas.

Bulbs have been cultivated since the sixteenth century. The first in Haarlem and surroundings, the Haarlem bulbs. Gradually, the cultivation expanded on the spiritual grounds . The present Bollenstreek arose between Haarlem and Leiden from the second half of the 19th century. Even today , most bulb fields are still found in the Bollenstreek and the north of the province of Noord-Holland , but also elsewhere in the country, including near Venlo , on Texel , in the northwest of the province of Friesland , in the Noordoostpolder and on the Zeeland and South Holland islands you can find bulb fields.

The Sand Motor at Monster, near The Hague, Zuid-Holland, The Netherlands.

The Sand Motor is an innovative method for coastal protection. The Sand Motor (also known as Sand Engine) is a huge volume of sand that has been applied along the coast of Zuid-Holland at Ter Heijde in 2011. Wind, waves and currents will spread the sand naturally along the coast of Zuid-Holland. This is called ‘Building with Nature’. The Sand Motor will gradually change in shape and will eventually befully incorporated into the dunes and the beach. The coast will be broader and safer.

Between March 2011 and October 2011, Rijkswaterstaat and the provincial authority of Zuid-Holland created the hook-shaped peninsula. It extends 1 km into the sea and is 2 km wide where it joins the shore. Trailing suction hopper dredgers picked up the sand ten kilometres off the coast and took it to the right place. There are also two offshore replenishment locations alongside the peninsula. The construction of the Sand Motor was completed in November 2011. Now, the forces of nature will take over and spread the sand along the shore, thereby reinforcing the coastline and creating a dynamic area for nature and recreational purposes.

Anyone who has ever seen these bunkers through the side window of the car on the Maasdijk. This small German 'Widerstandsnest 34' is indeed striking close to the water. This water was once a tank ditch of about 11 kilometers and was the primary defense of the Outer Landfront Fortress Hook of Holland.

Originally cultivated in the Ottoman Empire (present-day Turkey), tulips were imported into Holland in the sixteenth century. When Carolus Clusius wrote the first major book on tulips in 1592, they became so popular that his garden was raided and bulbs stolen on a regular basis. As the Dutch Golden Age grew, so did this curvaceous and colorful flower. They became popular in paintings and festivals. In the mid-seventeenth century, tulips were so popular that they created the first economic bubble, known as "Tulip Mania" (tulipomania). As people bought up bulbs they became so expensive that they were used as money until the market in them crashed.

It is not clear when the island was first inhabited. It is known from excavations that Romans lived on Goeree from the first to the third century AD. After that the population moved away, but in the seventh century partial repopulation followed. The village of Ouddorp already existed in the time of the Vikings , circa 800-1000 AD. At the turn of the first millennium, there was a tuff church here. Later, the population in the southeast corner of the island in the new Oostdijk polder founded a town for good reason, so a suitable mooring place for vessels. This new city of Goedereede was strategically located along an outer dike and was granted city rights as early as 1312, but siltation caused the city to move further away from the sea in later centuries.

(Bron: Wikipedia)

A bulb field is a field on which bulbous plants (initially only tulips ) are grown commercially. In the fall, the bulbs are planted again, after which straw is spread and run on the land in order to protect the bulbs from frost. After the bulbs have blossomed in the spring, the (usually virus-sick) bulbs and wandering (of other varieties) are selected and removed. Although it takes energy to flower, it is necessary to find the diseased bulbs. Then the bulbs are mechanically headed . The bulbs are then harvested and exported all over the world, where the buyers plant them in their own garden .
