Goeree and Overflakkee were once two separate islands. Little is known about the origins of Goeree. The island has a high age. Overflakkee is considerably younger and entirely made by human hands with some help from nature here and there.

The first reclamation is Dirksland in 1416, other dikes would follow soon. In 1751 a dam is laid between Goeree and Overflakkee and there is one island.

A bulb field is a field on which bulbous plants (initially only tulips ) are grown commercially. In the fall, the bulbs are planted again, after which straw is spread on the land and broken in to protect the bulbs from frost. After the bulbs have blossomed in the spring, the (usually virus-sick) bulbs and wandering (of other varieties) are searched for and removed. Although it takes energy to flower, it is necessary to find the diseased bulbs. Then the bulbs are mechanically headed . The bulbs are then harvested and exported all over the world, where the buyers plant them in their own garden .

I have seen this Renault Megane a few times parked at the station, so it is presumably owned by a permanent resident. Nevertheless, it still makes a nice spot.

The colorful tulip fields on Goeree-Overflakkee have become a rural attraction. Visitors come from all over the Netherlands to take photos of the flowers. Almost one in ten tulips sold in the Netherlands comes from the South Holland island. The big advantage is that, unlike Keukenhof, you don't have to pay a cent for it and its open.

The tulips are very popular abroad. Most tulip bulbs in the Netherlands go abroad. The typical Dutch flowers are particularly popular in Scandinavia and countries such as the US, Japan and nowadays also China. Traditionally there were many bulb growers on Goeree-Overflakkee. The soil is very suitable for this, according to tulip growers.

But please don't walk trough the flowers !!

Oostpoort (Eastern Gate) with its typical Dutch drawbridge, Delft, Zuid-Holland (South Holland), Netherlands

Some background information:

Oostpoort is the only remaining medieval city gate of the city of Delft. Built around 1400, it is an example of brick Gothic Northern European architecture. In 1514 the towers were enhanced with an additional octagonal floor and high spires. Today Oostpoort is one of the city’s most prominent landmarks. It has landmark status and is numbered among the Dutch Rijksmonumenten (Dutch national heritage sites). The gate currently serves as an art gallery and private residence. By the way, the other four city gates of medieval Delft were all demolished in the 19th century.

Delft is a city in the Dutch province of Zuid-Holland (South Holland). It has about 100,000 residents and is located in the north of Rotterdam and in the south of The Hague. The city is primarily known for its historic town centre with many little canals, Delft blue pottery (also known als Delftware), the famous painter Johannes Vermeer and its connection with the Dutch royal family, the House of Orange-Nassau.

Delft came into being as a landlord court aside a canal in the 11th century. The canal was the "Delf", which comes from the word "delven", meaning "digging". Two more canals were dug in the following decades. From a rural village in the early Middle Ages Delft developed to a city, which received its charter in 1246. Circular canals were dug, which surrounded the town and along these canals, fortifications were built. These fortifications fixed the shape of the historical inner city of Delft.

The town's association with the House of Orange started when William of Orange, nicknamed William the Silent, took up residence in 1572. At that time he was the leader of growing national Dutch resistance against Spanish occupation of the country, which struggle is known as the Eighty Years' War. By then Delft was one of the leading cities of Holland. It was also equipped with the necessary city walls to serve as a headquarters.

After the Act of Abjuration was proclaimed in 1581, Delft became the de facto capital of the newly independent Netherlands, as the seat of the Prince of Orange. When William was shot dead in by Balthazar Gerards in the hall of the Prinsenhof in 1584, the family's traditional burial place in Breda was still in the hands of the Spanish army. Therefore, he was buried in the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) in Delft, starting a tradition for the House of Orange that has continued to the present day.

On 12th October 1654 the Delft Explosion occurred, which is also known in history as the Delft Thunderclap. The explosion of a gunpowder store destroyed much of the city and also killed more than one hundred people. Fortunately many citizens were away, visiting a market in Schiedam or a fair in The Hague. Fortunately too both main churches of Delft, the Oude and Nieuwe Kerk, weren’t damaged too heavily.

In the 17th century the production of pottery developed, which was modelled on the imported Chinese porcelain. The city of Delft had an early start on this field since it was a home port of the Dutch East India Company. Today Delft is still famous for its mainly blue pottery, which is still produced at pottery factories like De Delftste Pauw and De Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles resp. Royal Delft.

Finally it has to be mentioned that the famous painter Johannes Vermeer (1632 to 1675) was born in Delft. Vermeer often used the streets or home interiors of Delft as subjects or backgrounds of his paintings.

Nowadays Delft is not least a city of tourism. With more than one million visitors each year, Delft is the second most popular destination in the Netherlands, only outclassed by the Dutch capital Amsterdam.
