For now, the only model of hydrogen-fuelled double-decker bus to carry passengers in the UK is the Wrightbus StreetDeck Hydroliner, although that will change soon when Alexander Dennis enters the fray with its Enviro400FCEV. The Wrightbus product can be found in London, the West Midlands, Belfast and - as seen here - Aberdeen, a city that saw its first hydrogen buses some years ago in a batch of now withdrawn Van Hool A330 models.
While the StreetDeck Hydroliner is no doubt at the vanguard of bus technology, the 25 in Aberdeen have encountered mixed fortunes; an earlier batch required rectification work that, despite them being new only in 2020, has kept some off the road for over a year. Those from the second batch, delivered in 2022, seem to be more successful. Here is 39718 (SV22 VXE) on Broad Street in the Granite City. It is operating the route that it's branded for, which a couple of hours of observations suggest is far from universal practice for First Aberdeen. Its zero-emission fleet will grow further this year with the delivery of a batch of Yutong E12 battery-electric single-deckers.

The Yutong brand has seen significant success in the UK, first with diesel coaches and now with battery-electric buses. Another string to the bow of importer Pelican Bus and Coach are battery-electric coaches, with the initial low-height, two-axle TCe12 soon to be joined by a taller and longer tri-axle GTe14.
In the bus world, the E10 and E12 are similar products that are approximately 10m and 12m long, respectively. They have recently been joined by the smaller E9 and the first U11DD double-decker will arrive here soon. The E9, E10 and E12 are all in service in Leicester. Here is an E10 in the Centrebus fleet, 853 (YD72 FFX), operating one of the city's Greenlines services that are among the benefits to have already come out of the successful enhanced partnership involving Leicester City Council and operators.
These E10s were the first Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas part-funded models to enter service anywhere in England and are part of a much wider conversion of fleets in Leicester to battery-electric. Here it passes the railway station while working an 81 journey to Evington.

In 2024 Alexander Dennis built a collection of Enviro400EV battery-electric double-deck demonstrators for the large groups, with most (or all) of them registered with suitable cherished marks. The First Bus example is fleet number 38600 (FB74 ZEB), and it has spent some time running in Glasgow alongside a large number of earlier Enviro400EV models that came from the Alexander Dennis and BYD partnership. It is a smart looking machine and is seen here leaving Glasgow city centre while working a 5 to Castliermilk.

It felt like a dream sequence.
With thousands of incoming requests, I happened to be at the right place at the right time to sign up for the first Tesla Model S Sedan, a fully electric, zero emissions car that can go 300 miles and 0-60 in 5.6 seconds.
(The “S-1” designation is a bit magical for me since the filing of a “Form S-1” with the SEC is the commencement of the IPO process. =)
After the car drove out into the party inside the SpaceX rocket plant for it’s public unveiling, Elon Musk took me for the first test drive of the new machine. I took a video of the whole ride.
One cool detail I missed in the video was the door handles extending linearly outward (providing a big grip for opening) and then retracting back into the door frame for a perfectly smooth surface.
The interior design is as radical as the iPhone; most of the dash is a 17" touch screen. There are no buttons or dials. And with a software-defined UI, various skins and web services are available over the 3G data link (as well as Internet browsing and HDTV). I’ll put another request in for an open interface for downloadable engine ring tones (the car is silent, so why not have the drive-by-wire data feed trigger the sounds of your favorite vintage gas-passing vehicle or rocket…)
The batteries and liquid-cooled AC induction motor (i.e., the entire weight of the drive train) are below the wheel line so it handles unlike any car I have experienced.
And that means that there is a trunk in front and in back and more interior space than any other sedan. Toss bikes with the wheels on through the hatchback. Or seat seven people.
Clearly I am enamored. Another short video from outside as the new customers for the Sedan take test drives around the block.

Two heavy electric motors were mounted on the front wheels of this Hedag, one on each side – but unfortunately one of them is missing.
The batteries are located underneath the driver’s seat and at the rear. Its range was approximately 80 km and its maximum speed 23 km/h. The Hedag had four-wheel brakes, which was unusual at the time.
Indicators in the form of small black boxes are situated on the mudguards. At the press of a button these boxes would open up and a little hand would appear, at the same time as the sounding of a crackling signal. Note the bell at the front which was necessary because you could not hear the car approaching.
The Hedag was designed as a taxi, but this model was privately owned. The original number plate of the Dutch province of Noord-Brabant is still on the car.
Hedag is an abbreviation of Hamburger Elektrische Droschken Aktien Gesellschaft. The company obtained a licence to run taxis after a ban had been
imposed on petrol taxis in cities such as Hamburg and Berlin.

Further investment in Bee Network franchised bus services in Greater Manchester is evident in Oldham, a depot now run by Stagecoach Manchester having previously been with First before the third and final tranche of reregulation at the start of 2025. Stagecoach has placed into service there a batch of Alexander Dennis Enviro400EV battery-electric double-deckers.
These are of the 'next generation' of battery-electrics from the manufacturer, following its earlier work to body BYD chassis for the UK and other markets. A ride on one of these demonstrated that the newer model is impressive, with a total lack of noise - unlike some earlier electrics where motor whine was rather pronounced. The Voith Electrical Drive System is used by Alexander Dennis, a package that has drawn acclaim for its efficiency. Here 80104 (SK74 BJJ) is seen in Oldham bus station while working an 84 journey to Grotton.
A visitor to Glasgow for the COP26 conference photographs an electric bus and its driver. The bus is parked on a normally busy road, but which has been blocked for the conference, so standing in the road is nothing to worry about.
I'm no bus expert, but this seems to be one of the 22 BYD ADL Enviro200EV eBuses from First Glasgow’s shuttle service at COP26.
The security fence round the conference venue can be seen in the distance.
