Been following this electric car’s development closely for two years (photos)...
The high speed charger is on the left, and thanks to SolarCity, it connects to the solar panels. No more gas!

The cost of a car/house can be counted in dollars, but the construction and running of a car/house takes a toll on the environment that's harder to measure.
A Porsche Panamera S hybrid is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) that can be charged by plugging the battery into the grid or a renewable power source.
The main function of the small batteries in HEVs – which recharge during braking – is to achieve better fuel economy than a conventional fuel-only vehicle.
A PHEV will not only allow hybrids to be driven further on low-emission electrical power instead of fuel, but will also turn the parked car into a battery bank for our family home.
PHEVs are not new technology but we can modifying them to support a completely unique application, that of using the car as a large mobile battery which can be integrated and used in our homes. Increasing numbers of people are looking to minimize both environmental impact and financial outlay by outfitting their homes with sustainable technology, and the resulting boom in sustainable building is driving new levels of architectural innovation.
Electric vehicles are on my mind.
The design space opens up dramatically for EVs, given the small size of the drivetrain and the various options for battery size, shape and location. I like to call it EV 2.0
It’s like a Cambrian explosion of body plans, from the 3-wheel Aptera motorcycle pod to the Tesla Sedan with weight below the wheel line.
Here, Ian Wright poses with his second Wrightspeed X1 in Monterey, with wider wheels as the car is traction limited in its acceleration. Ian spends about $1/mile for tires, the primary operating expense of the vehicle.
Here’s the video of my ride in the first X1. With the wind noise, it’s hard to hear my discussion with Ian, so here are some interesting tidbits from the drive:
• 1/3 the energy consumption of a hybrid (170 Miles Per Gallon equivalent).
• Like several early cars built by hobbyists, this is a retrofit (of an Ariel Atom)
• Everything you see is in first gear.
• The fast stops are regenerative braking (returning energy to the batteries).
• He accelerates from 0-60 MPH in under 3 seconds with the wider tires. That beats the $1.5MM McLaren F1 and Ferrari Enzo for a fraction of the cost. (Here’s a race with some other gassy supercars.)
Undoubtedly one of the most difficult parts of road transport to decarbonise is the coach market, which is reflected in there being just two such battery-electric models on the UK market. Both are from Yutong, with the larger of the pair being the tri-axle GTe14 as seen here.
While built in China, the GTe14 is otherwise an entirely western vehicle, with the latest examples including a Tesla-esque tablet as the dashboard binnacle. Over 600kWh of energy storage can be had, with a claimed range of over 300 miles; charging at 600kW is possible via twin CCS2 connections (and where sufficient power is available). Naturally, this all comes at a cost, but it is a clear indication that European coach manufacturers have a job-and-a-half in hand if they are to keep up over coming years.
Scottish start-up Ember is by far the biggest customer for battery-electric coaches in the UK so far. It began with the smaller TCe12 but has graduated to the GTe14, of which a large number are in service and on order.
Ember's business model is built entirely around zero-emission and, at least from what was seen here, that is delivering; this GTe14 in Dundee left with a full load bound for Edinburgh. It is SG24 UJJ.

Newport Bus has taken very well to the Yutong brand and now the majority of its fleet is from that Chinese manufacturer in battery-electric form. Recently it became the first UK operator to take delivery of the U11DD double-decker, which itself debuted in demonstrator form around a year ago. The U11DD is a bus that is as distinctive-looking from the front as it is the back. These are also the first zero-emission double-deckers in Wales and utilise the same driveline as fitted to the E10 and E12 single-deck buses, and at least the TCe12 among the two Yutong battery-electric coaches that are sold in the UK. Here 418 (CK24 AUH) departs from its home city bound for Cardiff on a 30 journey.
The first battery-electric buses on Merseyside for trunk services arrived a few years ago in the form of a batch of BYD ADL Enviro200EVs for Arriva. No more have followed, although the Liverpool City Region is in the protracted process of taking delivery of 20 similarly zero-emission but hydrogen fuel cell-electric Enviro400FCEV double-deckers presently. They form part of Mayor Steve Rotheram's plans to revolutionise buses in the Liverpool City Region that also include the now-typical hare-brained intention to reregulate services via the franchising mechanism, despite there being little to no indication where the substantial sum of money to pay for that will come from.
Meanwhile, back in the real world, Enviro200EV 7003 (LJ67 DME) passes the Empire Theatre on the final part of its journey into Liverpool city centre on an 18 journey.

An urban icon signed by a master's hand - that of Peyo, creator of the beloved Smurfs - this is a brand new car offered by the importer of Microlino in Belgium . When Swiss engineering meets the graphic poetry of Belgian comics, the result is as surprising as it is exceptional: a Microlino fully customized in the spirit of Peyo's universe.
Inspired by the iconic microcars of the 1950s and first seen at the Geneva Motor Show in 2016, the Microlino embodies a modern and sustainable vision of urban mobility: compact, electric, elegant, and eco-conscious. Designed by Swiss company Micro Mobility Systems and exclusively distributed in Belgium by D'Ieteren, the Microlino stands out with its rounded silhouette, signature front-opening door, and a range of up to 228 kilometres depending on the battery. Manufactured in Europe with a steel chassis and aluminium body, this retro-designed city car - valued at €25,000 - offers a driving experience that is as unique as it is efficient. Available as either a light or heavy quadricycle, the Microlino can be charged with either a household or Type 2 connector. The 12.5kW (17hp) electric motor is mounted at the rear and there is a choice of batteries in three different capacities giving ranges of 91km, 177km, and 228km respectively. The Microlino seats two adults and has 230 litres of luggage space. Top speed is 90km/h.
For this exclusive edition, the Microlino becomes a canvas for the timeless universe of Peyo. This unique model pays tribute to the Smurfs through an artistic design blending humour, tenderness, and nostalgia. A true one-of-a-kind work of art on wheels, it symbolizes the meeting point between popular imagination and technological innovation.
All proceeds from the sale will go directly to the Heads Up Fund for Brain Tumour Research based in Ghent, Belgium, which actively supports research into brain tumours, particularly among young people. Through this charitable initiative, the Zoute Grand Prix, Bonhams, D'Ieteren, and the Smurfs come together to show that art, mobility, and social commitment can move forward hand in hand.

Five BYD ADL Enviro400EV battery-electric double-deckers are with First Leeds, where they are branded for park-and-ride route PR3 to Stourton in this rather busy livery. They are nothing if not distinctive. Here 38402 (LG21 HZW) passes through central Leeds, in true First style operating a route other than what it is branded for as it heads for Temple Green on the PR2 service. Noticeable on closer inspection is that it has rear-view cameras in place of conventional mirrors - the latest fad, and one that experience suggests still has a bit of a way to go in some cases.
