Electrification of larger bus fleets in Scotland is progressing well, with funding from the Scottish Zero Emission Bus challenge fund being a major contributor to that pace. Stagecoach has been a major beneficiary of such Scottish Government funding. Its West Scotland business has a good number of battery-electric vehicles, including a decent batch of the latest-generation Alexander Dennis Enviro400EV. Here one of them - 80198 (SK25 AZD) is seen here arriving in Kilmarnock while working an 3 service to Shortlees.

When EV ‘retrofit’ conversions were authorised in France, in 2020, Renault became interested and partnered with R-Fit, a pioneer in the field, to develop kits to convert an ICE model into an electric car. The kits were sold by the Méhari Club de Cassis and were subsequently homologated for use on the road. One of them was for the Renault 5: developing 30bhp and keeping the original gearbox, it offered a range of 80km.
In 2022, Renault seized a double opportunity – on the one hand, its new partnership with the Roland Garros tennis tournament, and on the other, the 50th anniversary of the Renault 5 – to convert a few R5 GTLs into electric cars for use as official shuttles to transport players and members of the organising staff. The interior design was entrusted to Renault Design, who selected fabrics and materials regardless of cost.
Finished in canary yellow, this three-door R5 R-Fit has special blue cloth upholstery with yellow piping which is also to be found on the door cards, while the base and back of the seats are trimmed in grey to match the white dashboard. Yellow carpets and a dark blue headlining with black flame motifs round off this spectacular interior. The body carries the official tournament logos, while under the bonnet sits the electric motor, with a badge on top marked ‘Renault 5, 50’. This rare and exclusive version of the Renault 5, the sixth-bestselling car in France with more than 5 million units sold, is sure to appeal to enthusiasts. It has the advantage of having been customized by the Renault Design staff regardless of cost and of being homologated for road use in France.

Stagecoach London has 26 examples of the latest-generation Alexander Dennis Enviro400EV battery-electric double-deck in its fleet. Most are in Superloop livery for the SL3 route, but nine are in standard Transport for London red. All 26 run with the Selkent arm of the operator in south-east London.
Here 80423 (SK25 BCV) works a 61 trip from Chislehurst to Bromley North, seen passing the Orpington War Memorial in some excellent weather.

The Netherlands is making great progress in moving its bus fleet to battery-electric, a technology that in many locations already seems to be dominant. Chinese manufacturer Yutong now has examples of its U series buses in various places. The R-NET operation has various of those models in use. Largest is the U15 tri-axle, as seen here. It is QBuzz 8718 (80-BZR-9), seen in Leiden working a 401 journey to Zoetermeer. Many of this type and the shorter U13 are to be see in Leiden.
Another operator busy on rail replacement between Stockport and Manchester Piccadilly in February 2026 is municipal Warrington's Own Buses. It has several Volvo BZL battery-electric double-deckers at work. Regular punters along the A6 could be forgiven for mistaking these for Bee Network services given the similarity in livery, something I believe may not be a coincidence. Warrington was the only provider of zero-emission buses for this big rail replacement job as far as I could seen. Here 2020 (BU74 YTR) crawls along in dreadful traffic through Stockport shortly before arrival at the town's railway station. As with all BZLs in the UK it carries MCV bodywork.

The BYD BD11 battery-electric double-decker has quickly gained traction in London, with deliveries to at least four operators in good numbers. A trip on one gave an indication why; the ride is good, pretty much silent, and comes with no rattles, crashes and such over poor road surfaces.
Some of those with Arriva are for Superloop route SL5 between Bromley North and Croydon. Superloop is an express concept and stops are often some considerable distance apart, although the effect for travellers making longer journeys is highly beneficial. In the process of running to the layover point in Croydon at journey's end is ED68 (LF25 TPZ), running through a part of the town that has more in common with the worst days of the South Bronx than Greater London, although regeneration is no doubt underway.

This electrically powered car has an electric motor in each front wheel. The horseless carriage is made of light wood. With a range of almost 100 kilometres and a top speed of 40 kilometres per hour, it was one of the best electric cars of that time.
