The three regions of Slovakia look very different. In the west, one could easily be in the Willamette Valley, or in Illinois, or eastern Missouri. The highway connects the major cities, and the landscape is not that remarkable, but pleasant in its own way. Central Slovakia is dominated by mountains, the highway is intermittent, and you twist and turn through valleys and gorges, watching the peaks grow higher and higher as you continue east. Once past the mountains, heading into the hinterlands where the culture turns east and west, the land changes again. It becomes rolling hills with broad vistas, quilted with fields that look lovingly tended and bountiful. Truly, my heart was joyful driving through this place.
We come to the end of our time in Slovakia. We traveled from Bratislava, a mere hour from Vienna, all the way to Bardejov, neighbor to Poland and Ukraine. It was time to head west again and press on to Hungary.
Somehow, east Slovakia was special. I don't know what it was, but Mom and I both felt peaceful here. It was easy to be there, if that makes sense. Maybe it was the power of suggestion, as we had heard from the English-speaking gentleman of the Mountain Rescue Service that the Fedaks were from east Slovakia, and the woman at the ticket kiosk in Bardejovske Kupele was certain she and Mom shared ancestors. But maybe it's true, and deep in our DNA lies a gene that turns on when we are in this land. Maybe it was just the sense of completion, knowing that this was the end.
I paused to take this one last shot. We loved Slovakia. We went with no expectations and it charmed us completely.
