The Plains Zebra (Equus quagga) is one of three species of zebra, and is also the most widespread equid on earth. Because it is able to survive on grasses with low nutritional value, it is often the first animal to colonize new and unused grasslands. In fact, it will often travel great distances to do so! It is believed that the zebra's stripes evolved to combat predation--when lions or other predators are hunting at dusk or dawn, the stripes make it difficult to pick one animal out of a herd. When herds form, they are typically comprised of smaller harems, which consist of one male, between one and six females, and their offspring.

I now have 155 zebra photos in my stream but one more can't do any harm.

Pilanesberg Game Reserve is in the Bojanala Region of the North West Province, adjacent to Sun City. Set in the crater of a long extinct volcano, the Park ranks among the largest of the parks in South Africa (it is in fact the fourth largest park) and covers an area of 55 000 hectare.

The beauty of Pilanesberg is reflected in a large central lake, the Mankwe Dam. Over time, wind and water have carved a spectacular landscape with rocky outcrops, open grasslands, wooded valleys and thickets. Pilanesberg National Park accommodates virtually every mammal of southern Africa. Also home to the Big Five.

Playing Zebras in Burgers Safari, a part of Burgers Zoo in Arnhem, the Netherlands.

The Grant's Zebra (Equus quagga boehmi) is the smallest of six subspecies of the Plains Zebra. The Plains Zebra (Equus quagga, formerly Equus burchelli), also known as the Common Zebra or the Burchell's Zebra, is the most common and geographically widespread form of zebra. It once ranged from the south of Ethiopia right through east Africa as far south as Angola and eastern South Africa.

The Plains Zebra is mid-sized and thick bodied with relatively short legs, and are white with black stripes. Adults of both sexes stand about 1.4 meters high at the shoulder, are approximately 2.3 meters long, and weigh up to 300 kg however males may weigh 10% more than females.

Zebra! Always wanted to have a go at this simple black and White shot of a Zebra but they are hard to come by in London!!!

Taken at Newquay Zoo, seemed an ideal subject for a black and white conversion.
