The Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera, which formed when a large volcano exploded and collapsed in on itself two to three million years ago, is 610 metres (2,000 feet) deep and its floor covers 260 square kilometres (100 square miles).
Estimates of the height of the original volcano range from 4,500 to 5,800 metres (14,800 to 19,000 feet) high.
The elevation of the crater floor is 1,800 metres (5,900 feet) above sea level. The Crater was voted by Seven Natural Wonders as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa in 2013.
This was taken a few years ago at Blackbrook Zoo on a visit with two of my photography friends. It is nice to look back through earlier photographs .. this brought back some happy memories!
I can’t stay away from black and whites for too long can I ? This is one of the very first photos I took on the safari and it continues to be one of my favourites. I mean come on, zebras crossing the road, zebra crossing? The joke practically writes itself! And boy were we excited when we saw these zebras crossing our path! Good times :D
To think about it, this was quite a mundane sight in the savannah; Zebras were everywhere and they were constantly in front of our vehicle. A couple of times we had to stop for quite a bit of time so that they could clear out. Now that’s the kind of traffic I don’t mind!
And also note the dust raked up by the safari vehicles up ahead. Note to all potential visitors- Amboseli is a dust bowl, and it will get in your eyes, hair, ears, mouth - everywhere. But you will be happy. That much I can promise.
