Une légende africaine demande si le zèbre est blanc à rayures noires ou noir à rayures blanches. Cette question a généré de nombreuses légendes ou réponses fantaisistes mais des explications plus scientifiques existent.

Zebras are several species of African equids (horse family) united by their distinctive black and white stripes. Their stripes come in different patterns, unique to each individual. They are generally social animals that live in small harems to large herds.

Had to take one last Zebra shot before putting away the big gun lenses before boarding our plane.

This zebra had a fresh gash in its bottom. It looked painful but the ranger said it would heal. We found the culprits a little further on...

also called the plains zebra, Equus quagga, formerly Equus burchelli Body stripes are less numerous and broader than that of the Cape Mountain Zebra, whereas body stripes extend around the belly. Leg striping is less prominent. Faded shadow stripes rest between the bold, broad stripes on the haunch.

The Ngorongoro crater is one of the largest volcanic calderas in the world. The crater houses about 25,000 animals of very different species. It is considered one of the smaller areas where it is possible to see the big five, the five most representative animals of Africa: the lion, the leopard, the elephant, the buffalo and the rhinoceros (if the hippopotamus is included, then it should be enlarged the denomination to the big six). In addition, in the circle it is possible to observe, with a bit of luck, the exotic black rhinoceros, possibly the biggest attraction of the park.

The plains zebra (Equus quagga, formerly Equus burchellii), also known as the common zebra or Burchell's zebra, or locally as the "quagga"[2] (not to be confused with the extinct subspecies), is the most common and geographically widespread species of zebra, and wild perissodactyl (odd-toed ungulate).[3] It ranges from the south of Ethiopia through East Africa to as far south as Botswana and eastern South Africa. The plains zebra remains common in game reserves, but is threatened by human activities such as hunting for its meat and hide, as well as competition with livestock and encroachment by farming on much of its habitat.

I felt like pulling one from my Africa archives. Taken in Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe in October 2013.

Many thanks for your visit and comments. They are very much appreciated.

A threatened species these zebras have found their natural habitat more and more encroached upon. There are active programs to relocate some to other areas and so to give them a chance to recover.

One of my favourite animals in Tanzania, after the leopards, were the zebra. They are fantastic to see in the wild and are really interesting animals
