We started our training of OSP today via interactive webinar from threecanoes.com.
Here are my notes. There were four other programmy people in the room who fundamentally understand a lot of what was covered. I belong in the category of instructional designer who gets the sense of what's going on and was able to follow along until we got into the "predicate" discussion portion (see bottom right).
Essentially, here's the scoop, as I understand it- Sakai (our learning management system, called Isaak here at Brock) has optional tool called Open Source Portfolio (OSP) which allows you to plug in Resources (primary place for files) and Assignments (primary place to accept files/text from students) into a larger assessment framework. The primary mode of assessment is through Matrices which allow you to set up via Forms a structure for the criteria at a course, program or university-wide level.
The forms are created by the developer using XML.
For those of you still with me, XML is a hierarchal, markup language that consists of artifact, meta-data, structured data, schema.
Sample forms exist in the tools that we can customize as per our needs. We are currently running a pilot with Psychology 4th year capstone class with Dr. Tanya Martini. Ideally, she will consult with us on desired inputs and the developers will modify the xslt templates to create a structure that works with her desired assessment.
Users will then interact with the matrices to complete the forms which will include instructions and the option to multiple select or answer via free text.
The primary means of showcasing the data is via the portfolio itself. Which if rendered properly should look just like a nice clean webpage that links to all the input the user has entered.
That's as much as I understand. I'm expecting Matt to now chime in with some of his notes and then we'll have a fuller picture. I may have to edit this as a result :)

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class XML-11 49459 ( stenciled XML ) at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in October 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is excerpted from the book, CB&Q Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment, by Michael J. Spoor: CB&Q #'s 49400 - 49799 were built at Havelock ( CB&Q shops in Nebraska ) during 1966 ( as Class XML-11 ). Built to a Northern Pacific design, these were the only boxcars on the Q to feature the waffle pattern on the car side. All of the cars featured the combination 6' and 8' plug doors with grain access doors ( at the top of the 8' door ) originally introduced in 1963 on the Class XM-4's. Also like the XM-4's, they had an inside length of 50' 6" and a 5,080 cu. ft. capacity. While the XM-4B's of 1966 came with roofwalks and ladders, these cars never received either, even though both groups of cars were being built at the same time.
The waffle side cars featured protrusions on the exterior which held load tie-downs on the interior. Between 1967 and 1970, 126 cars had their loading devices removed and were re-classed XM-4C while retaining their former numbers. The only visible difference was the class stencil - XML or XL ( loader equipped ) or XM ( loaders removed ) - to the right of the CAPY data.

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class XML-1 23013 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in January 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is from the book, "CB&Q Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment", by Michael J. Spoor:
Built in 1955 at Havelock (CB&Q shops in Nebraska), the 100 cars of the Class XML-1, numbered 23000-23099 were all equipped with Evans DF (Damage Free) Loader Equipment.
The re-weigh date was: CH 7 77, although below the re-weigh stencil it is also stenciled: Fort Madison 6 68. I believe the trucks were known as Chrysler trucks, and once had a shock absorber (snubber) mounted in brackets between the coil springs, which have been removed by the time of this photo. There are two notes in the October 1971 Official Railway Equipment Register (ORER): Note # 4 says that cars in the 23000 to 23099 (among other numbers) are specially equipped with belt rails and cross bars. Note # 19 says that this car specifically (23013, among other numbers mentioned) is equipped with fork lift truck pallets, platforms or skids, which will be considered part of the car. Of course, that was in 1971, and these items may or may not be present at this date (1981). This car also appears to acquired a replacement door during a shopping.

This one I like because of the way we visualized search engines. Because the web forced us to think of things in different ways, we had to come up with new visual conventions. Personalizing technology went a long way toward making things easier to understand.

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class XML-11 49451 at Eola, Illinois on an unknown day in May 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The cardboard sign on the door reads: BROKEN DOOR PLEASE FIX. This car was stenciled: WHEN EMPTY RETURN TO AGENT CB&Q RR LACROSSE, WISC. It was also stenciled: XL and HV.12.69, indicating that it had loader devices and had been repaired at Havelock in December 1969. It has a non-standard paint scheme, likely because the merger was anticipated to be approved, the Burlington Northern colors had been chosen, but not the lettering font or style.
