As the relationship between China and Jamaica has grown closer, the impact has slowly made itself seen on the streets of the island with more Chinese cars, trucks, bikes, and buses showing up.

This vehicle represents a high profile example of this trend. This is a Golden Dragon XML 6125J13, one of 35 Golden Dragons acquired by the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (the Government owned bus service that operates in and around the nation's capital) in September of 2016. There was a substantial ceremony and fanfare surrounding the purchase as a symbol of growing Jamaican - Chinese relations, and that is also commemorated by the Chinese flag you can see on the side of the bus in these videos. The Chinese Ambassador to the island even made a point of attending the handover ceremony. Most of the 35 buses were smaller XML 6897J13's, but one of these larger units was included and can now be seen around Kingston. They have a nice sound to them and don't look half bad.

Golden Dragon is a subsidiary of King Long, one of the largest Chinese bus manufacturers. King Long sells buses under 3 brands: Higer, Golden Dragon, and King Long (King Long, interestingly, literally translates to "Golden Dragon" in English). Their buses have appeared all over the world as Chinese influence has spread, and you can find them in over 40 nations (Tanzania's new modern bus rapid Transit system, established just a couple of years ago, has a fleet consisting entirely of Golden Dragons and the brand has also found a lot of buyers in the Philippines). King Long brands have a strong foothold in Jamaica now - there is this big batch of Golden Dragons operated by the JUTC and also a significant number of King Longs operated by Knutsford Express, the largest long range/intercity bus operator in Jamaica.

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class XML-5 23230 as a pigeon roost at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in August 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was built by the CB&Q at Havelock, Nebraska in 1964. Sorry about the lousy grab shot, everything was moving, including me.

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class XM-4C 49531 ( stenciled XM ) at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in October 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is excerpted from the book, CB&Q Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment, by Michael J. Spoor: CB&Q #'s 49400 - 49799 were built at Havelock ( CB&Q shops in Nebraska ) during 1966 ( as Class XML-11 ). Built to a Northern Pacific design, these were the only boxcars on the Q to feature the waffle pattern on the car side. All of the cars featured the combination 6' and 8' plug doors with grain access doors ( at the top of the 8' door ) originally introduced in 1963 on the Class XM-4's. Also like the XM-4's, they had an inside length of 50' 6" and a 5,080 cu. ft. capacity. While the XM-4B's of 1966 came with roofwalks and ladders, these cars never received either, even though both groups of cars were being built at the same time.

The waffle side cars featured protrusions on the exterior which held load tie-downs on the interior. Between 1967 and 1970, 126 cars had their loading devices removed and were re-classed XM-4C while retaining their former numbers. The only visible difference was the class stencil - XML or XL ( loader equipped ) or XM ( loaders removed ) - to the right of the CAPY data.

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class XML-15 19828 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in August 1981, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in October 1967 by Pullman-Standard, it was one of 15 cars in the 19825 - 19839 number series equipped with Hydroframe cushion underframes and Evans DF2 loader devices. This car was stenciled: RETURN TO AGENT AT&SF RR. GALESBURG ILLINOIS. Most of the cars in this series were assigned to the Admiral Corporation in Galesburg.
