Petrified Forest National Park

I'm posting this as a record of the first time I've photographed the wrong bird!

Still at Mt Tomah Botanical Gardens, I was following a pair of relatively confiding whipbirds that were teasing in and out of shadowed and protected trees. Unfortunately they were keeping between me and the sun so the views weren't great. When one popped out onto a branch I took a few photos without looking carefully at the bird that was partly in silhouette. So just now I'm surprised to see it was actually a Red-whiskered Bulbul! In my defence they do have the same basic shape and both have a crest, though normally you'd be hard pressed to confuse the two.

(The Bulbul is an exotic Asian bird that has was introduced and settled in Sydney and seems to be expanding from there. Mt Tomah is perhaps 70km as the crow flies from central Sydney).

The painting is a well-known Vermeer painting called 'the guitar player'. She is holding a baroque guitar, which is in fact an ancestor of the modern guitar.

I could be wrong....I usually am...but I think this is a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker that has been visiting our garden for quite a while, usually arriving just after dawn it can be heard tapping away at the dead branches looking for food. We were rudely awoken by a smoke alarm malfunction just before 5 this morning. After being jolted awake it was impossible to back to sleep so when we hear the tapping start we looked out and spotted it. I got my camera which was still fitted with the 400mm zoom after a day at Cosford, I managed to get a few shots off deep in the trees so I had to up the ISO hence the graininess.

Or is it a greater spotted woodepecker.....

This thing (and many other trees and shrubs) had decided it's springtime just as the cold wave was hitting us - today we have snow, I wonder how this feels.. Nature gone crazy :( (But it was beautiful while it lasted; snow is also beautiful but it didn't last - so far)
