Since purchasing the SB900 a couple of days ago I've been researching flash photography. I came across a DIY lightbox writeup (from another Flickr user) and built one today. All up cost me around $15 which is great. Anyway, this is my first feature shot tonight. I'm a bit dissapointed since the Nikon lens cap is under exposed, if only I had another flash to the right!

DIY lightbox with subject in the middle. SB900 on left outside box triggered by Nikon CLS. Shot with Tamron 17-50 at f/5, 1/250th sec & ISO400. D300s 5 sec timer on tripod.

Funny kid. I wanted to take an average picture and it looks like on a dare from his friends over to the right, he kept nonchalantly walking this path. Had a smirk on his face. I didn't care.

this is an image of the ganga aarti at the Dashashwamedha Ghat on the

river Ganges in Varanasi (Benaras). writeup:

Dashashwamedha Ghat, is Varanasi’s most popular and accessible bathing

ghat, with rows of pandas sitting on wooden platforms under bamboo

umbrellas, masseurs plying their trade and boatmen jostling for custom.

Its name, "ten horse sacrifices", derives from a complex series of

sacrifices performed by Brahma to test King Divodasa: Shiva and Parvati

were sure the king’s resolve would fail, and he would be compelled to

leave Kashi, thereby allowing them to return to their city. However,

the sacrifices were so perfect that Brahma established the Brahmeshvara

lingam here. Since that time, Dashashwamedha has become one of themost

celebrated tirthas on earth, where pilgrims can reap the benefits of

the huge sacrifice merely by bathing.

Ganga Aarti at Dasaswamedh ghat, is one of the prime attractions of

Varanasi. It starts just after sunset, with a bunch of young men

choreographing to the chantings, holding the lamps. People start

arriving at the ghats as early as 5pm. Dasaswamedh ghat becomes a hub

of activity, with people sitting and waiting for the aarti, buying

flowers and other things from nearby shops or performing pooja. As the

aarti begins, the men take their positions at the platform and begin

swinging the lamp to the tune of chantings. Big lamps look beautiful

after darkness sets in. The choreography is excellent and worth seeing.

This mural is at 20th St. on Indian School, north side of the street facing west. This was painted by Thomas Medina back in 1992, or so. (thanks to the AZ Republic for the update)

Here's a more informative writeup from one of our fine Flickorettes:

City Street Mural Art: Close-up of Marilyn Monroe Mural, Phoenix, Arizona

Vintage "pinup-girl / come hither" pose of Hollywood actress and iconic sex symbol Marilyn Monroe (June 1, 1926 - August 5, 1962).

City mural is painted on business wall on northwest side of Indian School Road, west exterior wall of Truckmasters.

Artist: Medina ’02

Info about the mysterious Monroe mural, from Sam Lowe at Arizona Oddities:

For nearly a decade, an image of actress Marilyn Monroe has been catching the eyes of those who pass the northeast corner of 20th Street and Indian School Road in Phoenix. The mural-sized rendition of the late sex symbol languishes for more than 30 feet on a black background on the west side of a building currently occupied by Truckmasters, and although many are familiar with it, nobody seems to know why it’s there or who put it there.

One version offered me a few years ago is that the owner of a motorcycle shop on that corner wanted to paint a sign on the building, advertising his business but couldn’t get a permit from the city. So he commissioned the painting of Marilyn instead because it was a mural, not a sign. The cycle shop is now vacant and nobody in the two adjacent business places seems to know about her origins.

These few shots are some old ones of mine from a drift day last year at Santa Pod Raceway.

I needed a few extra shots of the Team Sannsi cars for a write up on www.fueltopia.co.uk so I had to dig these out of the archives :)

One of the most exciting announcements at this year's NextFest was the $20M Google Lunar XPrize. Wired magazine has a nice writeup on it, discussing the primary motivation (cheap, private space travel) with some nice quotes from my old boss Peter Diamandis.

Of course, because there's finally an article about Peter, the moon, and private space travel, BlastOff! is finally mentioned in the press. BlastOff!'s mission plan was almost exactly what is now the Lunar XPrize. BlastOff! was the little space startup that could. I worked for them for about 6 months in 2000, until it imploded because of the dotcom bubble crash.

When I started suspecting things were going downhill, I wrote a little page in a purposefully wide-eyed naive tone. I was intending a "behind-the-scenes" feel without giving any information away, hoping to spread it on the Net. It was never released because I kept to the stealth mode policy and no one thought it useful to release it. I used to wish I would have, but back in 2000 the world wasn't quite ready for private space companies. Now they are.

African immigrant beach traders, Marina di Palmense on the Adriatic coast of Italy.

The bags might be counterfeit designer labels, for all I know about it.

The source of these bags might be the Camorra – see Hotel House.

But then again, in either case, they might not. I wouldn’t know.

There are three bag sellers in this picture, and this is typical at certain times of the day on Italian beaches in 2011.

This morning as I sat with my green tea and poppyseed bagel, I drew the Empress from my Rider-Waite Tarot. For reasons that I've expressed in past writeups, I don't 100% relate to this deck, but I've felt very compelled to work with it this week.

Anyhow, The Empress. The card depicts a lady in a flowing gown decorated with pomegranates (yum) and what looks to me to be a crown made of flowers. She is lounging on some luxurious pillows in a field, with trees and a stream behind her.

I got two reads on this:

I'm sure The Empress is my sister, who is expecting. Earlier this week, she had occasion to be in hospital (false alarm) and that day I got "The Empress", "The Star" every time I picked up my deck. I think sister is ready to have her baby.

I'm also wondering if The Empress is me, but not for baby reasons, just general lady reasons. I've been growing out my hair and wearing jewelery again for the first time in a long time. Heck, I'm wearing a skirt today. I wonder if The Empress represents my renewal in a more lady-like wardrobe.
