Last month I finally launched a legit website/blog for exploration writeups and stuff. I did a few minor entries to test the waters; then on Christmas - 30 years to the day of the tragic fire, and two years after its first new residents in 27 years moved in - I published a full history and writeup on the Karcher Building in Waukegan, which can be read here...

Incidentally: I don't think I've photographed it from the south end, before, so here.

This house was built by Albert to be a sustainable green house. Here's a writeup about it from the Miami Herald.

'Tis quite a nice place.

The Moscow airshow (officially called the Moscow International Aviation and Space Salon) is like a Cold War spies wet dream. Most of the current russian airforce makes an appearance, along with some of the other exotic stuff that you dont get to see so often on the other side of the curtain.

I had 4 good years with my Canon 40D, 5x,xxx some odd shutter clicks, a broken USB port and a broken shutter button. I can no longer check the shutter count due to the broken USB port, and I can no longer shoot without a battery grip due to the dysfunctional shutter button. Although, I can't say the camera has treated me bad in any way, even after all that stuff, it still produces amazing quality images (like the one you see here ^_^)

After a very long anticipated wait, I have finally decided to pick up a new camera. I purchased a Canon 5D Mark 2 and it came in the mail today. I found this camera on Craigslist Orange County for a good deal with 500 shutter clicks on it, so it was essentially a brand new camera. It had the original box, equipment, receipt and even an extra OEM canon battery! Now you're probably wondering, "Doesn't Watson live in Norcal?" "Why would he look for a camera in the OC" Well, this is where my awesome girlfriend comes in. Heather met up with the seller, bought me the camera and shipped it to my house with 2 day shipping. :D How awesome is that?

I am super super super super super stoked!

You like my use of creative adjectives?

Anyways, I hope you guys are ready for some awesome shots!

The rain wasn't too bad overall, but the wind was strong enough to collapse and - in this case at least - break umbrellas.

blog writeup here

This is a photo of my desk at home. I'm using my desktop PC here and working on the writeup for an Info 206 assignment. The only things supporting the exact task at hand are my keyboard, mouse, and monitor - the assignment is entirely on the computer. I guess you could argue that the coffee is supporting my ability to do the work.

My desk is littered with a variety of things that aren't directly related to the task at hand, but are leftover from miscellaneous tasks in the past week. I do some of my 203 reading here on paper. There is a piece of scratch paper under my monitor, which I used to sketch out some layouts for my personal web site. There are also a few business cards from an event I went to over the weekend. On the right, there is a stack of random papers and mail that I haven't cleaned up yet.

There are a few restaurants in Hong Kong that are famous to locals, but once the big guy drops in, they advertise it like crazy. This place was amazingly delicious, and had the writeup inside the table top.

Museum Writeup: "Stamps and seals indicating ownership or manufacture were very important during the Early Byzantine period. Artisans and merchants applied stamps to their products, and people used them in homes to secure closets and chests. The loops on the back allowed the stamps to be worn as rings, making them always available. The Greek inscription on this example translate as "Health". The piece was used to seal large casks of wine. The Greek inscription on this (2nd) example translates as "Drink Good Wine". It was used to seal large casks of wine."

See its partner in the neighbouring photo. That's how wide the Transfer Table is that moves subway cars around. It runs on these two rails, that are farther apart than the length of a subway car.

Quote by Edgar Allan Poe

My first serious attempt on a self-portrait.

I would like to recount on the slash mark on my right cheek. When I was 3, I used to wonder "Why is that only my father can shave and not me? Why shouldn't I try doing it myself?" Once when everyone was out, I dragged a stool all the way from our kitchen to the toilet, climbed on it and dragged his sharp razor across my cheek. Blood dripped all over my cheek, while I was seriously staring at the mirror to see if I had done it right.

[View it Large on Black]

A couple things 'bout this. First, this guy was actually no more than three inches long. You're looking at a nice macro shot (105mm), where the lens was stolen borrowed from the fellow in the previous shot. Probably two years ago. I'm still using (good gawd, it's an awesome lens!).

Go ahead & look at the large view. It's really nice. If I were to post the full-size version, you'd be even more amazed.

Second: this is a strobist shot, and it was taken in Hawaii - on our Lanai. But the shell? It was a gift from the ocean (and not plucked from the sea - some things you just don't do!). Mile 69 beach, to be exact.

I tried to writeup a couple of explanations on how it all went down, but I think I failed. If you care, you can see:

* The setup and another view (click the image there for a closer look).

* Yet another view and the blow-by-blow. (BTW, I'm not playing with Hardy's recent post. I'm classy like that.)

So I dunno. I've been having a rough month - not able to get thoughts into words very well. But if you stumble through any of the links, let me know what you think. Maybe I'll get on the right track again.

Oh, about the cowry

Strobist: one strobe, with softbox to camera left. 1/4 power, manual. One strobe to camera right, reflected off of Oceanic product booklet. 1/8th power.

An excellent talk from Phil Hawksworth at FullFrontal:

"We all love to see exciting and innovative "interface shizzle" driven by JavaScript and the ever increasing rendering capabilities of modern browsers, but are we getting these at the expense of the Web? This talk will explore the good, the bad, and the fugly of rich interfaces, while examining how and why we should take care not to damage the Web."
