Writeup from Meteoritical Bulletin 89:

Northwest Africa

Found 2003

Carbonaceous chondrite (CV3)

Hundreds of fragments (total weight of 5895 g) were purchased in Erfoud, Morocco in December 2003 by Adam and Greg Hupé. Description and classification (Ted Bunch and James Wittke, NAU): olive gray to tan in color depending on the degree of weathering. In thin section, much of the matrix has a pronounced “ripple” texture: subparallel, curvilinear thin bands of olivine grains (Fa32-36), up to 10 µm in size, enclose pod-like masses of micron to submicron Fe-rich olivine (Fa42-58), pyroxenes, sulfides and minor weathering products. Chondrules are typically <2 mm in diameter, although a few chondrules may be as large as 8 mm in diameter. A small stone was found to contain a dark inclusion measuring approximately 9 cm by 2.5 cm by 1 cm. Many types of small CAI inclusions are present and rarely exceed a few mm in diameter. Low weathering grade: no metal observed in the matrix, although some chondrules contain fresh metal. Specimens: 20.3 g, NAU; main mass, Hupé.

So I am feeling better - and thank you to everyone who left me comments, sent flickrmails, e-mailed and IM'ed me, you really are sweet, I do so appreciate it - and after going to the gym I decided to do a little girly pampering. It definitely helps being a freelance artist for a company that gives you tons of free stuff. Hellllllo gratis!

Face masks have come a long way, hey? Now they are a nice iridescent glowy pink instead of weird green stuff. Now I am nice and relaxed and realized it is 9pm and I still didn't do that thing I have to do. Hmm...

Traveling out from Center City Rochester along State Route 31, about the place where urban sprawl ends and the City become Pittsford sits Long Meadow, the first ever Monroe County subdivision.

Developed in the early 1900's when the main way into the City was a trolley line, that ran alongside the alternately dusty or muddy two-lane dirt road, “the Avenue”. It ran from City Rochester to Village Pittsford and back.

The subdivision was “advertised as ‘Long Meadow Bungalow Sites’”. Now a lovely neighborhood with large lots, mature landscaping, and homes of varied architectural style.

I happened upon the area by accident. A friend whose car was in the shop needed a ride. This brought me into the subdivision. I was struck by the peace and beauty of the neighborhood. And as I drove out the variety of architectural styles. By chance I had my camera with me and just had to snapped away.

Information for this writeup came from The history of Long Meadow - Part 1 and Part 2 on the town of Pittsford web site.

The architecture is awesome here because it's designed to get people to communicate with each other (open area, single coffee bar, etc). I'm sure you've read that ad nauseum in writeups of Pixar.

I've seen women dressed up as Willie before, but never with the chorus singers too.

May the Plush Be with You

By Erica K. Landau • Photos By C. Stiles

What if Darth Vader were a cuddly Beanie Baby — a tiny, stuffed Sith Lord accomanied by a lovable poem about his dark side and tucked under the arm of an unsuspecting 6-year-old? The cutesy, plush-toy company Ty Inc. might never go for it. But in a gallery not too far away, an army of more than a hundred hand- stitched Star Wars figures is gathering — and they’d surely kick the stuffing out of any Beanie Baby. They’ve traveled from as far as Pennsylvania, Canada, and London for “Stitch Wars,” an exhibit opening Saturday at 7 p.m. at Bear and Bird Boutique + Gallery in Lauderhill.

Last spring, Bear and Bird co-owner Amanda Magnetta put out a call across the crafting blogosphere, inviting fans of the revered fantasy series to re-create their favorite characters as plush art. Only rule: It had to be in the spirit of the gallery’s monthly StitchBird Workshop, where everything is stitched, knitted, or otherwise handcrafted. The figures range from tiny finger puppets (Star Wars, meet thumb wars) to a kick-ass, five-foot-tall plush Chewbacca. “People love Star Wars — that’s what it comes down to,” Magnetta says.

Even before opening, the show has drawn attention from Wired magazine’s blog, which recently called it a “must-see exhibit.” One of the artists is 28-year-old Dennise Rodriguez. Puerto Rican-born, she has also lived in Miami and Fort Lauderdale, and now has a place in Boca. Rodriguez first saw Star Wars as a 10-year-old on the island with her dad, whom she describes as a “sci-fi freak.” When Magnetta asked her to contribute to the plushy show, she came up with pieces representing a wampa, Chewbacca, and, of course, Han Solo. “That was Harrison Ford before he was Harrison Ford,” she says. Her Star Wars pieces sell for $25 to $50. Other submissions: Kit Lane’s Jabba the Hutt — The Early Years, a felt creation of an innocent baby Jabba cradling a toy bunny; and the knit-bunny series, which includes the ghost of Obi “Bun” Kenobi.

They can trade spear-throwing tips.

We were one tour gardens during our town's sixth annual Secret Gardens of Lake Forest Park tour.

Secret Gardens of Lake Forest Park tour

(nice writeup by Elizabeth Griffin in our local paper)

"Across the city Mary Ellen Asmundson has collected more than 1,000 cultivars in her small suburban garden. Sloping, the yard is terraced in circular patterns with gravel and dry stack stone walls. Within these visitors will see unusual perennials and shrubs from New Zealand and Australia, as well as local varieties. Asmundson has planted a successive garden that stays in bloom 10 months out of the year. To maximize space she grows vines, bravely combining them with other plants. A wisteria grows at three levels with purple clematis and yellow climbing roses circling around it. Her yard will give you a multitude of ideas on gardening with flair in a small space."

We had fun - there were a lot of volunteers that helped - and I would guess we had 300 people through our garden in a day. All the proceeds go to community organizations - so it was satisfying to help in this way.
