For Greg Lee, starting a business during the recession was a daunting endeavor. Yet, Lee’s G Michael Salon didn’t just survive, it thrived. In fact, it thrived so much that Lee is planning to relocate his Noblesville, Indiana salon to Ironworks at Keystone on Indianapolis' Far Northside early next year.

“I started the salon in 2009; it was both scary and exciting, but I knew that my passion and dedication would perpetuate our growth, “ Lee said. “Initially, we built our reputation and brand on word of mouth, and we were successful because of our advanced training, customer service and unique interior designs.”

Steady growth has perpetuated the move to a more central location. As Lee watched Ironworks take shape, he decided it would be the perfect spot. Among other updates, he hopes that the salon’s new “Serenity Suite,” an enclosed shampoo room with spa music and luxury Italian shampoo stations, will be the talk of the town.

Even though he is the owner of G. Michael Salon, Greg Lee also has a full list of customers.

As the salon’s owner, Lee finds himself wearing many different hats, from cutting and styling hair to managing business operations and seeking out opportunities for continuing education.

“The salon industry is super competitive,” he said. “Our artistic design team immerses itself in new seasonal trends by bringing in top educators from around the country to teach the latest color and cutting techniques. For every obstacle, our team brainstorms to find solutions. I believe these reasons have been our recipe for success.”

Question: What are your main responsibilities?

Answer: “When I’m at the salon, I primarily work as a stylist. I have an amazing team in place to help me run the everyday operations; I do however keep a pulse on what’s going on at all times. My responsibilities include being a positive mentor, checking in with my managers regularly to make sure everything is running smoothly and, most importantly, taking time to engage with all our guests.”

Q: What’s a typical workday look like for you?

A: “I arrive to work and engage with my team as we all pitch in to set up for the day, relaying any important announcements or general information. My day is fully booked with guests, so I check in with my team during processing times or in between guests to ensure everything is running smoothly. At the end of the day, I do one final check to see if there was anything that we could have improved on during the day to offer a better experience to our community and build a better team.”

Q: What makes your job cool?

A: “I don’t consider it a job — to me, it’s a gift. I have the opportunity to touch people’s lives. When my guests come to see me, I’m not only their hairstylist, I’m also their friend, therapist and confidant. Sometimes, it’s not about the conversations that I have with my guests; it’s about making someone realize they are beautiful. I love making people look and feel their very best.”

Q: What’s not cool about your job?

A: “With so many photos on Instagram and Pinterest showcasing different color and cutting trends, peoples want those looks now. What they don’t realize is that sometimes going from really dark to really blond will take several visits and cost a lot of money. With the newest fashion color crazes, people don’t understand that the color won’t last, and that it’s either been done that day or the photo has been enhanced.”

Q: What qualifications or training do you need to do your job?

A: “In Indiana, you must complete 1,500 clocked hours in a cosmetology school. Beyond that, you don’t have to meet any advanced education requirement to retain your license year to year. At G Michael Salon, we require our stylists to attend advanced education courses regularly to ensure that we’re up on the latest techniques and trends.”

Q: What skills and characteristics are necessary to be successful in this line of work?

A: “A great personality enables you to quickly establish trust and build long-lasting relationships. If you’re able to connect with your guests, you can really understand what they’re looking for and nail their desired look. Another important characteristic is the ability to adapt to change. In our industry, techniques and trends change seasonally and if you don’t keep up, you’ll quickly fall behind.”

Q: Where do you want to go from here?

A: “Once we’ve settled into our new building, a few ideas are to open a spa, develop our own product line, or open a G Michael advanced academy.”

From the university's writeup on the building:

"The Valley Life Science Building (VLSB) was funded by a 1926 state bond that was actively campaigned for by UC Berkeley students and alumni, designed by architect George W. Kelham, and completed in 1930. The building is located in the center of the UC Berkeley campus .

"At the time of its completion, it was the largest building in the United States west of the Mississippi River and the largest academic building in the world. The building is mammoth in its proportions. The footprint of the building is approximately 250×500 feet; its figure eight racetrack of hallways extend for over a mile. The building has five floors, for a total of 408,500 gross SF1 of space, of which 269,500 SF is assignable space. VLSB was designed in a 'Neo-Babylonian' style; the four projecting pavilions at the corners of the building contain art deco elements such as friezes of garlanded ox skulls, griffins, and Egyptian-Babylonian priests."
