Long write-up for today's batch of awesomeness.
First off. This whole covid thing, the election, working from home, not being able to go out, not seeing friends/family, etc. Has me, and I'm sure everyone else frazzled. Having a project to work on, in my case hiking out and shooting photos of graffiti on trains has been the one thing that's keeping me sane at this point. Hoping to see some new pieces from writers that I respect is like opening a pack of baseball cards and finding your favorite players rookie card for me. Yeah, it sounds goofy, but I've been having fun, staying sane, and seeing and capturing some amazing pieces of rolling art.
So I had this weird Monday vacation day on 11-2-2020. I decided to drive out to one my my benching spots and hang out for the day.
The plan was to set up a time lapse camera, and then just hang out and bench freights for 5-6 hours. There wasn't a cloud in the sky and a slight breeze, 88F. high. No clouds makes for a very boring time lapse between trains coming by. I also only brought my little Small Rig clamp for the time lapse camera and couldn't decide where I wanted to clamp it. I should have just brought a tripod.
Out for a few hours before the BNSF guys in their truck rolled up, got out and started walking toward me. "Great!" I thought. They're going to try and chase me away. Nope, they walked over to one set of tracks, walked across the bridge inspecting the tracks, then under the bridge inspecting the bridge, got in their truck and left. I like that. I don't bother you. You don't bother me.
A while later I see tree guy coming back home. I don't know his name, but there's a guy who lives in/under a tree that's next to the trail I hike in on. Once he's in there you'd never know it. I've seen him, he's seen me, and we don't bother each other.
The whole time I'm there I'm using my little Tascam recorder to record train audio every time one comes by so I have audio for the slideshow videos I've been uploading on YouTube. Well, this time I forgot it out there. Didn't dump my photos until Tuesday night and discovered it missing. Woke up early, drove out and it was still there. It recorded for almost 5 more hours before the batteries died. Glad to have it back, I thought tree guy might have found it.
"Fai vedere al tuo sogno che veramente ci tieni a incontrarlo, senza pretendere che lui faccia tutta la strada da solo per arrivare fino a te, poi le cose accadono. I sogni hanno bisogno di sapere che siamo coraggiosi." (Fabio Volo)
Il writing nasce a New York negli anni ’60-’70 inizialmente praticato sui vagoni della metropolitana, per poi esplodere come fenomeno urbano su muri, cartelli pubblicitari, e nelle università.

The Postcard
A Valentine's Series postcard that was posted on Friday the 3rd. September 1909 to:
Miss Windover,
South Park,
Gerrards Cross,
Bucks.
The message on the back of the card was as follows:
"Sept. 3rd./09.
My dearest cousin,
You must think I have
quite forgotten you,
but I have not.
I will write to you in a
day or so.
Hoping you are all well.
With fondest love from
Lil".
Beddington Park
Beddington Park was the former manor house of the Carew family, lost to money lenders and bad debts by Charles Hallowell Carew in the 1850's.
The Domesday Book mentions two Beddington estates, and these were united by Nicholas Carew to form Carew Manor in 1381. The Manor, once a medieval moated house, was home to the Royal Female Orphanage from 1866 until 1968. It now contains council offices and Carew Manor School.
In about 1591 Sir Walter Raleigh secretly, and without royal permission, married one of Queen Elizabeth I's maids of honour, Elizabeth Throckmorton of Carew Manor. Raleigh spent time in the Tower of London for this, and Elizabeth was expelled from the court, but the marriage appears to have been a genuine love-match and survived the imprisonment.
A popular story is that when Raleigh was beheaded by James I in 1618, Elizabeth claimed his embalmed head and kept it in a bag for the rest of her life. His body was buried in St. Margaret's, Westminster, and after his wife's death 29 years later, Raleigh's head was returned to his tomb and interred at St. Margaret's Church. Local myths claim the head remains in Beddington Park, or was inherited by his son and buried with him.
The Grade I Listed great hall (or banqueting hall), containing a fine hammerbeam roof, survives from the mediaeval house. In the grounds are part of the orangery built in the early 18th. century around orange trees planted by Sir Francis Carew (claimed to be the first planted in England) and an early 18th.-century Grade II* listed dovecote.
Archaeologists have recently discovered a Tudor garden including a grotto at Carew Manor, believed to have been created by Sir Francis Carew in the 16th. century. Its exact location has not being disclosed in order to protect it from looting.
St. Mary's Church
The Grade II* listed 14th.-century flint parish church of St. Mary's occupies a prominent position in Beddington Park, immediately south of what is now Carew Manor School.
It contains an organ screen by William Morris. The church is designated at Grade II* for the following principal reasons:
-- It has substantial amounts of fabric from the 14th. and 15th. centuries.
-- It has two lych gates.
-- It was extensively restored and provided with an extremely elaborate and interesting mid-Victorian decorative scheme.
-- It has monuments and other fixtures of importance from circa 1200 to the 20th. century, including Carew tombs and the font.
-- The Morris and Co. organ is of special note.
-- The Last Judgment reredos is unusual.
The Sinking of the Ferry Boat Magnolia
So what else happened on the day that Lil posted the card to her cousin?
Well, on the 3rd. September 1909, the ferry boat Magnolia was struck by another ferry, the Nettie, in Sheepshead Bay, New York.
The Magnolia split in two, sinking very quickly. All 33 people on board survived a difficult rescue.
It seems remarkable that today, over a hundred years later, with modern navigational equipment, ships still manage to collide with each other on a frequent basis.
My write up on photographing the new Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas here
On the weekend of November 20-21, 2010, I was invited to photograph the new Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas prior to their opening December 15, 2010 in Las Vegas NV.
This set of images represents my efforts that weekend to showcase this newest resort property opening up on the Las Vegas Strip. Thanks to David Scherer from The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas for showing me around, to Miiko Mentz at Katalyst Films for helping to arrange the shoot, and to my wife for modeling for me.

the time, tho of late I have used my composition time & energy on my Free Music machines, graphs, etc. More about all this when we meet.
If you can let me know if Macquarie House is still existing, or if there is another boarding house available, we will then decide how many days we will be in Sydney & will write & try [?] engage rooms accordingly. So much hinges on the museum, as we will be able to divide our time, in the future, between Sweden & Australia, as soon as we know that all things of artistic significance are in the museum & we then can sell our American house, etc. And everything connected with the museum has gone so well. It is so roomy & everyone has been so helpful & kind. But of course we must concentrate on museum work this time - so that we can be freer in the future.
Love to you both from Ella & me.
Yrs ever
Percy

Photograph from Simon Burder. He writes "It’s actually a rather unsuitable ceramic Butler sink to which I have added a wooden insert. There is a trap underneath to help prevent grit entering the drains but it doesn’t show in the photo. Someone who doesn’t understand what we are using the sink for had a very bright idea of putting tiles behind the sink which we have to be careful not to smash! The students put a piece of vinyl in front of the water pipes to protect them and the tiles from being bashed by their stones."
