Mounds of almonds
Despite weather worries early in the year, the state's almond crop will likely bounce back to 1 billion pounds, a federal agency reported Wednesday.
Industry people were concerned that the harvest would fall short for a second straight year because of cold and rainy conditions during and after the late-winter bloom.
But plenty of nuts have emerged on the branches, and the August-November harvest looks to be a strong one, the National Agricultural Statistics Service said in its initial report for 2006.
"It started off a little scary, but it's made a nice recovery," said Doug Flohr, a statistician for the agency, during a briefing at the Almond Board of California offices in Modesto.
The report, known as the "subjective" estimate, was based on a telephone survey of 368 growers, representing 24 percent of the acreage. The "objective" estimate, based on the agency's own inspection of the orchards, will be released in late June.
The stakes are big for the Northern San Joaquin Valley, where almonds brought more than $900 million in gross income to growers in 2004. This money, from consumers the world over, rippled out to tractor dealers, fertilizer suppliers, lenders and others connected with the crop.
The state harvest hit 1 billion pounds in 2002, 2003 and 2004, after years of expanding acreage. It dropped to 915 million pounds last year because of wet weather during the bloom.
The weather was cold and wet in much of early 2006, prompting concern about another short crop. That could keep the industry from meeting all of the demand it has cultivated — from snack-nut buyers in minimarts to candy and cereal makers who purchase almonds by the ton.
A short crop also could raise almond prices, prompting food processors to increase the retail prices of items containing the nuts — or to not use them.
The 2006 projection of 1.02 billion pounds is shy of the record crop of 1.09 billion pounds in 2002, but welcome nonetheless.
"I think that the supply that we have is just what the doctor ordered," said Dave Baker, director of member relations for Blue Diamond Growers, a major almond marketer.
Experts cited a couple of reasons for the turnaround:
The weather improved long enough in February to allow a good bloom in the nonpariel variety of almond, the most common. Later-blooming varieties had more trouble.
Beehives for pollination were available, despite fears of a shortage due to a mite that has ravaged colonies across the nation. Renting hives was more expensive than usual, but the bees were "aggressive" in pollinating the flowers, Flohr said.
"We track bee flight hours, and in fact, bee flight hours were better than last year," said Dave Phippen, a Ripon-area grower.
Bill McKinney, a grower just north of Modesto, said he saw some frost damage in early February but improvement later on.
"We went out and looked at it after all the hard freezes, and we were expecting a disaster," he said. "The trees seemed to hold on."
McKinney said extra fungicide spraying helped control diseases that can emerge in wet conditions.
Wednesday's report projected that the average acre will yield 1,760 pounds of almonds this year, up from last year's 1,580pounds, but down from the record 2,000 pounds in 2002.
The state is expected to have 580,000 almond-bearing acres this year, unchanged from last year. A sharp increase is expected by 2010, as harvests begin in orchards planted in response to the high nut prices of the past few years.
The average price hit a record $3.08 per pound last year. Baker said 2006 nonpariel almonds are about $2.25 a pound, enough to provide profits to growers.
The industry, expecting 1.5 billion-pound harvests in a few years, continues to work on boosting demand. It has been aided by studies indicating that almonds could help prevent heart disease and certain kinds of cancer.
A report this week from Rabobank, a Netherlands-based lender involved in agriculture around the world, cited the challenges ahead for California's almond industry.
In a news release, Rabobank analyst Chris Noble said that growers "need to keep in mind that, although global demand and appreciation for almonds is at an all-time high, it is important not to overproduce, and to maintain the correct balance between supply and demand."

So after the dinner we went to this massage parlour. Don't worry totally legit. Most painful experience ever! Those chinese girls sure give painful massages. Should of known it was a bad idea considering I am very tickelish. After waiting for a room for 4 for 30 mins watching some weird tv show and concluding that mainlanders can't dance, we entered the hour of torture. I spent the next 45 mins screaming in pain and laughing. It started off nice with a facial and heat packs, but then they started touching me below the face and thats where it all started to go down hill. The girl meant well and totally didn't understand my reaction (i found out later Jeff the evil guy told them to keep going and that I liked it when i'm screaming out in pain and giving them hand signals to stop). But most things she did to me was so painful. I gave everything a try but I couldn't take it. Don't know why I even let them step on my back, because Jeff was screaming in pain. Should of said no.... they did some thing where they dug their heels into my bum cheeks and that was sooooo painful! The massages were so violent! I had a good sleep that night but never again... while sober... So after the crazy massage we stopped for supper. Here we are at tables outside and bowls and plates shrink wrapped.
