The Stacks at 224 is an exhibition by Forrest Sincoff Gard, 2023-2024 Artist In Residence at the Office for the Arts Ceramics Program. The exhibition features all new work by Forrest that was conceptualized and made during his residency.
The Stacks is the newest addition to his Built to Play body of work, which highlights the importance of play throughout our entire lives. In the Built to Play series, Forrest focuses on the mundane parts of life, such as toasting a waffle, folding socks, or putting a book on a shelf. He turns those moments into ceramic art objects as well as risk-and-reward games that are specific for the gallery, often challenging expectations for that space.
Sincoff Gard drew inspiration for The Stacks from the bookshelves in his South End apartment as well as from Boston Public Library, Harvard’s Widener Library, and MassArt’s Morton R. Godine Library, which is where the artist collected discarded books that he used to make plaster molds. These molds were used to create the ceramic books on display. The Stacks also features other objects one might find inside a library—a large hand-built globe, a playable board game, and a wheel-thrown wall clock. Forrest’s decision to include an open plaster mold was inspired by the worktable seen on display as part of the Glass Flowers exhibition at Harvard’s Natural History Museum. He desires to share how the work was made and to remind viewers that these books were made out of clay.
During the reception, visitors had the chance to interact with the work by playing a stacking game. The player who made the tallest stack won a prize: their choice of book from the stack. There was no penalty for smashing a book.

"Octagonal work table veneered in exotic wood; hinged lid with octagonal mirror inside, revealing one central circular lidded compartment and eight wedge-shaped lidded compartments radiating around; on a triangular column carved with acanthus at top, with three square scrolling legs.
This worktable in Western style was designed by King Kamehameha IV of the Sandwich Islands. At the age of fourteen, Alexander Liholiho, as he was then called, had travelled to Europe and met Prince Albert. Later, during his reign, he was keen to combine British manners and behaviour with native Hawaiian culture. This worktable similarly combines Pacific materials with British design. King Kamehameha died in 1863, the same year that Prince Albert died. This table therefore, was a personal gift from one widowed Queen, Queen Emma, to another, Queen Victoria.

King Kamehameha is notable for his unification of the Hawaiian Islands in 1810, becoming Hawaii’s first king. He ruled until his death in 1819.

I will never again make lemonade without adding a tablespoon of Acid League’s honey yuzu living vinegar. Tasting Artizn’s tonic of handmade aged Korean vinegar and fresh fruit juices, and then Apple State Vinegar’s ginger and Hawaiian chili shrub poured with fizzy water, I realized almost unconsciously how narrow an experience it is to drink sodas that are only sweet. Remember the first time you had sea salt on chocolate? Or salted caramel? Sourness, so often isolated, is really essential to a full enjoyment of anything sweet. This argument found its finest point in Element’s blueberry-rosemary shrub, which, when mixed at a ratio of one ounce shrub to five ounces seltzer, tastes precisely like I always imagined fresh spring water did in C. S. Lewis’s Narnia books.

I got a drafting table to use as a desk/worktable. It is great, because the height is adjustable and the top tilts. The wheel under the window is my black walnut 30" N. hall saxony.

Gahhhh. Where am i gonna draw??
Today I'm doing a drawing. Back to basics, just me and a sharpie marker and an unwitting sheet of paper.

Some of my vintage sewing books are under the worktable. The rest of my sewing/crochet/kniting books are in a bookshelf in this room. They share space with some of my 600+ cookbooks!
Mmm... delicious :D The green one is my favorite so far, so different than all the others. None of them are frosted yet.
This is the waist high table my husband built for me. It's perfect for working at without having to bend over. I can also fit several bins and supplies under it as you can see.
The pads on the table are chux or adult incontinent bed pads. They work great for dyeing and can be reused once they are dry if you spill anything on them. These two will be used several times. Get them at Walmart in the health department for less than $10 a package.
