After a three weeks since the building-stop, the first workers are getting back to work. The building-stop was one of the measurements the Beijing government took to decrease air pollution for the Olympic Games.

The Capitolio Nacional has been undergoing lengthy renovations. The road workers are preparing the Paseo de Martí (Prado) for the visit of President Obama just two days from now.
Construction of the Capitolio was started in 1926 by Cuba’s U.S.-backed dictator Gerardo Machado. Its design mimics the Capitol Building in Washington, DC, but with the critical difference of being just a few feet taller. The Capitolio was the site of the Cuban Congress from 1929 until its dissolution following the Cuban Revolution in 1959. Since then the building has housed the Cuban Academy of Sciences and the National Library of Science and Technology but now is being restored for use once again by Cuba’s National Assembly.
Old Havana and its Fortification System was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1982.

Greece is in the throes of an economic meltdown. The IMF, EU, and European Central Bank, with the backing of the German government, have imposed severe austerity measures forcing Greeks to pay off a debt incurred by corrupt politicians. The conditions imposed on a bailout have led to massive layoffs, worsening conditions for workers, rampant wage theft, the shredding of the social safety net, and sharp increases in taxes. The cuts have have plunged the economy into a death spiral, forcing unemployment to 27% and climbing.
Much as the Nazis arose in Weimar Germany by exploiting similar economic conditions, Golden Dawn, an avowedly fascist political party, has been rapidly gaining power in Greece. Golden Dawn captured seven percent of the seats in parliament in the most recent election. Armed with government funding and the tacit cooperation of thepolice (many of whom are Golden Dawn members), fascists attack and murder immigrants in the streets, while offering free social services to Greek citizens to build their support base.
It is a bleak picture- but there is hope. Ordinary Greeks are mobilizing to prevent the right-wing takeover of their country. Neighborhood assemblies, Immigrant solidarity groups, labor unions and other civil society organizations are resisting both Golden Dawn and the destructive government policies that created the economic collapse, and increasingly challenging capitalist control of the economy with strikes and workplace occupations. In northeast Greece, workers at Vio.Me (www.viome.org/) have taken over their building materials factory, restarting production without bosses. They join a rising tide of workers control initiatives across the globe, opening the door to another world.

Taiwan labor unions called lawmakers to vote against the disputed labor bill.
Labor unions gathered at 9 am Tuesday called on the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmakers to vote against a disputed labor bill that would eliminate seven public statutory holidays.
"Go against the party will, Come with the people will!" protesters chanted outside the Legislative Yuan by police line, raising more than 60 placards displaying portraits of DPP lawmakers.
In evening, when the ruling DPP legislators voted to extend the meeting into the night until the Legislature completed a clause-by-clause review of the labor bill. Hundreds of union protesters performed funeral rites outside the Legislative Yuan, symbolizing the "death of democracy," as lawmakers passed a labor bill that eliminates seven statutory holidays for private sector workers.
Three leading Taiwanese enterprises, namely ASUS, MediaTek Inc, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC) announced last week that their employees will continue to enjoy the seven statutory holidays next year regardless of the outcome of the bill.
