The Capitolio Nacional has been undergoing lengthy renovations. The road workers are preparing the Paseo de Martí (Prado) for the visit of President Obama just two days from now.
Construction of the Capitolio was started in 1926 by Cuba’s U.S.-backed dictator Gerardo Machado. Its design mimics the Capitol Building in Washington, DC, but with the critical difference of being just a few feet taller. The Capitolio was the site of the Cuban Congress from 1929 until its dissolution following the Cuban Revolution in 1959. Since then the building has housed the Cuban Academy of Sciences and the National Library of Science and Technology but now is being restored for use once again by Cuba’s National Assembly.
Old Havana and its Fortification System was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1982.
