This is Daisy. She is my friend's Giant Wire-haired Daschund. She is naughty, funny and very very scruffy!

don't know what it is about this particular photo, but i can't help laughing every time i look at it.

a fuller description of matea can be found on her "set" page: www.flickr.com/photos/illonahaus/sets/372673/

hard to be the location scout, chauffeur, trainer, behaviorist, photographer, AND the hair stylist. i had to suck at at least one of them.

next time i'll let smers do his own hair for his shoot.

more to see in merrick's "urban" set.

better yet, check out merrick's urban blog entry

quick trip to the water bowl and she comes back to find her spot on the couch occupied.

my girl enjoyed a hike last week with friends ... so nice to get out on a real hike ... just like old times.

A digital artwork of the Wirehaired Vizsla. The Wirehaired Vizsla is listed #144 on the AKC list of most popular dog breeds

... from his big sister.

and this boy has a lot to learn about the world.

it's going to be quite a long time before merrick will be off-leash. he listens well, however, one scare and this boy would be gone. so it's a long-line or the flexi for now ... and even THAT was a small feat. because of merrick's past, he was terrified of the flexi leash, and it took several walks and training sessions before he was able to trust it enough.

i do hope he will be off-leash one day. a dog needs to be off-leash and free ... but safe. once i see his confidence high enough, i'll start off-leash training as i have with all my other dogs to have them safely off-leash and enjoying great adventures. i SO look forward to that day.

but for now ... baby steps.

today i got a call from a guy who owns a deer farm ... haven't heard from him in over two years because it's a rare occasion when one of his stock goes down. the last one, two years ago, had been in a snowbank for a week, so it wasn't the freshest and actually pretty frozen ... but today when he called, he had a 2 yr old buck down and there was no hope for him. knowing that i could come right away, they ended the buck's suffering, and even though i didn't manage to get the dogs out for a walk today, i DID bring them home an entire buck.

hours later in the garage, with not a bone left uncleaned, i now have 80 extra pounds of fresh venison.

matea, of course, helped with the cleanup.

and if anyone's interested -- while in the vein of raw-feeding (no pun intended) -- you might want to check out a piece i wrote as a rebuttal to a vet's extremely ignorant article on raw-feeding this past week. here is the link:

my rebuttal to some extraordinarily archaic thinking regarding feeding a species-appropriate diet

there is a link at the end of that entry which takes you to the vet's article, but if you want to go to it directly, it's here:

how nutritionally-ignorant, closed-minded vets think ...

if you're a raw feeder and would like to add your comments under the piece, please voice your opinion, experience, etc.

The hardworking Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, renowned as the 'supreme gundog, is known for the harsh, low-shedding coat the breed is named for. Outgoing, eager, and quick-witted, Griffs are incomparable in the field and loving at home.

(photo taken last thursday) no fun and games for matea for a whle, but she'll be back to her old, mouse-snorkeling self soon. i have to believe that. she's my girl.

yup, it's one of those that's better large

Top left to right: Borzoi, English Springer Spaniel, Greyhound

Center: Shiloh Shepherd, Biewer Terrier, Smooth St. Bernard

Lower: Whippet, Wirehaired Dachshunds, Great Dane

These are a sampling of the breed dogs that were on Exhibit at the Expo. Most are champions from show ring circles - all were very used to people. ( *None of the breed exhibit dogs were for sale or rescue, only some of the Greyhounds.)

The Greyhounds are all rescues from the race tracks at Tijuana, Mexico. If they don't run well they're put down so there's a huge rescue operation going on in So. California all the time. I HATE dog racing and exploitation of animals!

Only three and a half months old here, she's already fully aware of the wonders of the kitchen table. Since then she's grown into her ears and skin, but her nose is still big.

Debbie likes the snow. She likes everything, really, as long as there's a ball involved.

this was a lucky capture, taken during a quick shoot i did for a blog entry

merrick's got a big tongue.

and for those of you who know matea for the supreme no-bull bitch that she is, i'm sure you're as surprised as i am. for those of you who DON'T know matea ... well, just imagine that little, scraggly kid in Aliens going up and giving the queen alien a kiss just as she's crapping out another egg. then you have some idea just how amazing this new relationship truly is. :)

We got these two to settle down for a photo together after they ran on the soccer field. Both are focused on Sandy who has the reward cookies for posing nicely.

Rosie the pup. A standard wirehaired Dachshund. Almost 5 months old

This week I spoiled Barclay with a bag of toys, a bone, a frisbee and a new collar. His favorite toy is a blue and red shoe. He carries it all over the yard and the house. He loves it when somebody throws it for him and he can chase it through the yard. When no one is around to throw it he runs down the yard with it in his mouth, drops it and bats it with his paws, picks it up again and runs back up the yard just like he does when someone throws it for him. I just love him so much. (Christine and Coco got new bones too). Here he is with his new shoe.

Barclay's favorite spot in the house is on the loveseat looking out the window. He watches the chickens and the birds from this window. He also sees whatever is going on in the wetland next to us. He sits here for quite awhile. He and Pearl (the cat) both love this spot.

Why I got a standard Dachshund, because a mini wasn't enough.

my girl in my favorite alley. you can take her out of the field, put her in the middle of the city, in a dingy back alley, with nothing for miles to hunt ... and this girl is still hunting.
