October 2014 - An Immature Bald Eagle in the process of landing on this tree branch, in the Whiteshell Provincial Park.
October 2009
A new edit and crop of an old photo from 2009...
While travelling thru the Whiteshell I was fortunate enough to come across this red fox that was walking along the cut grass beside the road...
I pulled over and got out of my vehicle and sat down on the edge of the road, about 100 feet ahead of him... he paid no attention to me but kept walking toward me until he got within about 20 feet, at which time he decided to turn around and go back the other way...
A few more pictures to follow in coming days...

On New Years Day i ventured out to see if once again I could find a Great Gray and fortunately I came across this guy who was hunting for a morning snack...
He would make a couple of plunges into the snow and often sit there for only a few seconds before flying back up to a higher perch, missing whatever he had been trying to catch..
Every once in a while he would land and stay there looking around (as in this shot) and then plunge his head into the snow face first... signalling that he had caught something... eventually he would bring up his catch and in a matter of seconds it would be down the hatch (no bitting or tearing just open up and say ah....)... more pics to follow.

October 2015 - This young red fox was so unconcerned about my presence that he lied down and went to sleep for a few minutes on the rocks not 40 feet away from me.
December 2012
What an amazing experience I had back in December
It was cold (-20 celcius) with a wind chill (-30) and still I braved the cold to go look for Northern Hawk Owls, with the hope of maybe seeing a Great Gray...
I was quickly rewarded. I found this Great Gray that was sitting high up in a tree not far off the road... and over the course of the next couple of hours I photographed him in a variety of trees as well as hunting for mice...
In this picture he had flown back up in a tree and was perched there looking for food... eventually he would fly down and plunge into the snow in an attempt to catch a vole... though not always successful, he did have a good meal this day.

A very close up of this fox that I had been watching in the Whiteshell.
He actually walked to within about 8' of where I was sitting as he walked past me.
This particular shot, taken from about 15 feet away, was just as he was walking inside the minimum distance on my lens...

This fox that I had been watching walk along the side of the highway in the Whiteshell, ended up walking into the woods, but not before he stopped while standing on a fallen log and looked back in my direction giving me this parting opportunity...
November 2013
This Red Fox was in the process of making off with his meal... a nice large jack rabbit...
Unfortunately he picked up his meal and took off never looking back...
Christmas Eve Owl
This Great Gray Owl presented me with an early Christmas Present...
He was extremely photogenic and cooperative.. despite the -35 degree wind chill, he hunted along the side of the road in front of me for a couple of hours allowing for a number of decent shots...
In this particular shot he had landed on a short metal post that was just off the north side of the road, and I was positioned across the road on the south side... several cars drove by between us as he sat there watching them and me all the while keeping an ear out for any mice or voles.
Unlike years past, this year there seems to be an abundance of Great Gray Owls in Southern Manitoba where in years past you may have been lucky to see one all winter...

Here he is seen with the mouse in his beak about to be swallowed whole... interesting that as they swallow their prey they cover their eyes with their protective lid... more to follow.
He did this twice more over the next while each time giving me some great shots.... when I got home I found that I had over 400 of this beauty....

While out for a drive in Eastern Manitoba right before Christmas, I happened to come across this Great Gray Owl...that was hunting for food along the side of the road...
Over the next while he proceeded to give me many great opportunities for photos as he hunted, captured, ate, rested and hunted some more,..

On this windy day, I had gone out to the Whiteshell with the hopes of seeing a fox... and at the end of the day I was finally rewarded with this fellow who was standing guard just outside of a den... (the entrance to which is at the far right of this frame)..
I was able to get a couple of distant shots before he dove into the den for cover.

August 2013
The eighth and final shot in a small series of shots of this Blue Heron that posed oh so nicely for me....
We had noticed him flying across a river in the Whiteshell and landing on this rock as we stopped the vehicle... I got out and was able to slowly work my way down to the shore line and sit on a rock in the water about 100' across part of the river from this guy.... he seemed content, as he stayed there for about 15 minutes during which he displayed some interesting behaviours...
This fellow woke me up when he borrowed my canoe early in the morning (we were sharing a campsite) - which I didn't mind because I got two really nice shots out of it.

During a trip out to West Hawk Lake looking for Bald Eagles I came across a family of Beavers on a small pond...
I watched the beavers for a couple of hours taking lots of pictures as they swam around and foraged for some food that they were stockpiling for the winter...
In this close-up picture, the male was keeping a close watch on me as he swam back and forth about 20 feet away from where I was perched on the shoreline...
I really like this shot as it looks almost more like a painting than an actual photograph or so I think...
