Area high school students competed in the inaugural Carl Sandburg College Welding Competition held May 18 in Building G at the Main Campus in Galesburg. Teams from Galesburg, ROWVA, United, Monmouth-Roseville and Galva competed in the event.
Who doesn't like a good Weld, looking like a crazy octopus, and insect magnets too.

they have to heat the heads up to 400 degrees and then weld in stages to build the valve ports up. Then grind down by hand.

Students are working on the April 2020 parade entry--a redesigned ambulance--that will be a mobile tribute to HCC’s dynamic community. Under the direction of professor Ashley Hope, these photos and videos represent their work so far this fall: welding, plasma cutting, grinding, sanding and designing, and a small wedding tribute to a fellow student.

I imagine the act of welding liquifies the layer of zinc/galvanization and the pressure from the arc or welding flame causes spattering, but I don't know.
