A friend was doing some welding so I decided to try my luck at getting some close-up shots. We had a good system where I'd focus on the spot, shut my eyes really tight and then he'd start. When I heard sparks, I shot. Got some pleasing results.
Found in a vacant trade school: A 1942 Jam Handy instructional filmstrip on the delicate art of welding aluminum tubes.

Area high school students competed in the inaugural Carl Sandburg College Welding Competition held May 18 in Building G at the Main Campus in Galesburg. Teams from Galesburg, ROWVA, United, Monmouth-Roseville and Galva competed in the event.
this is one of the only times I saw him wear the mask; most of the time they just weld with their eyes closed. The dust from the flux burns, so there was a dropper with saline in it in the shop.
Before I left, I left about $1000 to buy new safety gear (helmets, aprons, gloves, safety glasses), but unfortunately somewhere between the check being delivered to the school and the shop, the money disappeared.
Bright arc lights, flying embers and no health & safety. Great for photos and not bad welds for first time welders!
