November 3, 2007 - This is another 'thing' I made in welding class at The Crucible. A total of five pieces of metal taken from the scrap bin. The antlers were the inspiration for the rest of the moose, as I found that piece as-is.
He lives in our garden now hidden amongst the plants, but I'm pretty sure he keeps the mountain lions at bay.
Except for light branch lines, just about all line in NSW is continuously welded. These are thermit welds, done in field to join sections of rail.
A friend was doing some welding so I decided to try my luck at getting some close-up shots. We had a good system where I'd focus on the spot, shut my eyes really tight and then he'd start. When I heard sparks, I shot. Got some pleasing results.
Using a $5.- fixture from my electronics workbench to hold a tab in place for welding to a curved surface. Worked really well.

Getting ready to remove the "stumps" that used to support the parking deck. I think this contraption is meant to go down in the muck and cut them off. (Or maybe it's supposed to shake them loose like a pile driver action in reverse?)
My first ever attempt at welding. An utter failure as a weld, but a stupendous success as a piece of art.
