One of the most powerful moral attacks on the institution was Theodore Weld's "American Slavery as It Is", first published in 1839 and reprinted several times.
Made up principally of excerpts from advertisements and articles in southern newspapers, the book condemned slavery out of the slaveowners' own mouths. Among hundreds of similar items in the book were reward notices for runaway slaves containing such statements as "it is probable he will aim for Savannah, as he said he had children in that vicinity," or advertisements like the following from a New Orleans newspaper: "negroes for sale.—A negro woman 24 years of age, and two children, one eight and the other three years. Said negroes will be sold separately or together as desired."
Harriet Beecher Stowe used Weld's book as a source for scenes in the most influential indictment of slavery of all time, "Uncle Tom's Cabin". Written in the sentimental style made popular by best-selling women novelists, Uncle Tom's Cabin homed in on the breakup of families as the theme most likely to pluck the heartstrings of middle-class readers who cherished children and spouses of their own.

Theodore Dwight Weld (November 23, 1803 – February 3, 1895), was one of the leading architects of the American abolitionist movement during its formative years, from 1830 through 1844. Weld played a role as writer, editor, speaker, and organizer. He is best known for his co-authorship of the authoritative compendium, American Slavery As It Is: Testimony of a Thousand Witnesses, published in 1839. Harriet Beecher Stowe partly based Uncle Tom’s Cabin on Weld's text and it is regarded as second only to that work in its influence on the antislavery movement. Weld remained dedicated to the abolitionist movement until slavery was ended by the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1865.
Weld became a student at Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati in 1833. There he became a leader of the "Lane Rebels." This group of students held a series of slavery debates over 18 days in 1834 that divided the community. When the school's board of directors, including president Lyman Beecher, tried to prohibit the students from supporting abolitionism, Weld and a group of students left the seminary and were accepted by Oberlin College.
After 1830 Weld became one of the leaders of the antislavery movement working with Arthur and Lewis Tappan, New York philanthropists, James G. Birney, Gamaliel Bailey, and the Grimké sisters. He discontinued lecturing when he lost his voice in 1836, and was appointed editor of its books and pamphlets by the American Anti-slavery Society. From 1836 to 1840, Weld worked as the editor of the Emancipator. He also directed the national campaign for sending antislavery petitions to Congress and assisted John Quincy Adams when Congress tried Adams for reading petitions in violation of the gag rule.
Weld married Angelina Grimké, a strong abolitionist and womans rights advocate, in 1838. In 1839, he and the Grimké sisters co-wrote the pivotal book American Slavery As It Is: Testimony of a Thousand Witnesses. As Weld used pen names for all of his writings, he is not as well known as many other notable 19th century civil rights advocates.
With this Tiger (Chinese) laser diode (325nm/~180mw) in a reused driver+enclosure I can fuse/solder the really really fine 40ga cathode wires used in 2.5mm El-wire...
but to be honest I find that the "soldering iron and copper foil" technique is much easier and safer.
I recently tested a 640nm (red) / 205mw diode in this same enclosure and it (regrettably) only lived about 30 seconds before it overheated. Not unexpected, but fun while it lasted - it would burn holes in car tires 5M away.
4 beads, 4 students, 3 have never tig welded before tonight and the other maybe 3 hours. I do enjoy this. My 1st #welding with #tig didn't look like that the VERY 1st time I added wire the puddle. Much to learn and a great deal of room for improvement but an excellent start. The 4 overlapping beads were done by me while demostrating.

Bruce Cormier (L) and Elias ( R) prepare a ladder rung for welding at Point of Grace school site, Ogal Beach Kenya August 9,2011. The school site is located near Lake Victoria just west of Kisumu. Bruce was part of the Bethel Lutheran Church team from Sherwood Park, AB who installed a playground and hosted a Vacation Bible School for Point of Grace. Elias is a Maasai who also looked after site security. Bruce is the current Edmonton Chapter Chair of the Canadian Welding Association.
