You may not be able to "pahk your cah in Hahvahd Yahd," but you certainly "pahk" your bike. These are parked outside Weld Hall, a Harvard dorm.
Crude, but effective. Lots of welding practice here.
3/4" x 065 A36 hot rolled seamed square tubing (doesn't weld too cleanly) for the frame.
0.125" 1018 cold rolled strip (welds better) for the caster mounting pads.
I was very frustrated with the stick welding objectives, so I switched to TIG and it was just as fun as I remembered and I'm pretty good for a novice, too.
Welding a grating that must stand up to vehicle traffic on a beachfront property. Four welds per joint.

This weekend I finally did something about it.
On the one hand, it turned out much better than I was expecting for a first shot through a very quickly hacked up frisket. On the other hand, I don't expect it to last long. Despite claiming to be able to stick to plastic, the primer's adhesion to the helmet is weak at best and a big chunk came off near her foot when I removed the frisket film. Which is very bad, since the film's adhesive is about as sticky as a post-it note. I suspect that as soon as I start some serious TIGgin' the paint is going to start to blister and peel off.
If that happens, all it really means is that I get to peel it all off and do it again, only better!

At ReStore in Edgewood looking for cheap parts I stumbled upon a welding torch. Replace the upperpipe with something longer and the bottom with an illuminated tube of some sort and this will become a steampunk lightsaber.
Today I was looking through my archives looking for stuff that I might be able to pitch to a market and might have missed. Two years ago I photographed workers welding new steel rails near my home and documented the process. I uploaded the shots to my website today and then e mail picthed to a couple of big companies to see if they might be interested in buying licences to use some of the shots.
The Heath-Robinson process involves "aluminothermic welding".
A granular mixture of aluminium metal and powdered ferric oxide is ignited in a kind of movable coldron. The reaction generates amazing heat and the molten result is poured into a clay mould over the joint gap between the rails to be welded. The mould is broken away and the weld is then ground smoothe while still red hot.
