Newport News, Va. (April 3, 2003) - Northrop Grumman Newport News Shipbuilding employee Michael Bonelli welds, and later grinds, a newly fabricated pad eye on the flight deck of PCU Ronald Reagan (CVN 76). Both Sailors and the ship's builders are working diligently to meet the deadline for the upcoming sea trials and commissioning in July. Friction Stir Welding was invented by Wayne Thomas at TWI Ltd in 1991 and overcomes many of the problems associated with traditional joining techniques. Friction Stir Welding is a solid state process which produces welds of high quality in difficult to weld materials such as aluminium and is fast becoming the process of choice for manufacturing light weight transport structures such as boats, trains and aeroplanes.

QB Fabrication and Welding is making the frames for the solar panels on Oregon's Solar Highway demonstration project.
Methuen Construction (a bit of a misnomer; they are two towns away in Plaistow NH) is a construction company. Some UMass Lowell students (I was one of them) took a tour of this company. This photo shows welding. I took three welding photos, but the other two aren't uploaded here because they have people in them.
Super stoked to finally ground my welding stand. I think on average, I waste a good 15 minutes clamping, unclamping and clamping the frame to the ground lead. That's just a guess, but it will be interesting to see what kind of time savings I'll gain. It will certainly allow me to keep a good flow going and not tangle up all the leads constantly. Things will be tidy, or as Poppy used to say "Just So".
These girls danced to some techno music and wielded their, er, welding machines and letting sparks fly in tune (or to their credit a best attempt) with the music.
Wendy stepped on her sunglasses snapping the nose bridge and rendering the glasses unwearable. Rather than give up on them we decided to try and mend them using acetone (found in some nail polish removers). They welded together enough to handle. I'm not sure that this will last, but it beats the mess of working with gorilla glue.

Working on the exhaust pipe before we put it back on the car. I love that he moved around in this shot and I got some cool ghost-y effects.

i used a queen bed frame becasue it was available and steel prices are going up. One afternoon for this handy space saving device. construction planning was rather a challenge so i would still have access to all the mig compartments and not void a warrenty. it has its own air regulator. It now has and a "common" plug and common ground for the different components. in the future would like to also have a place to hang an angle grinder. a real one stop shop.

Untouched, but here is the details. First attempt with welding screen glass at long exposures. This was taken with a Parweld Shade 8, with an aperture of f11 for 93 seconds. There are marks on the glass, plus some flare, which I will investigate in time.
