"How to weld", by Todd Brigidum. Seems like a pretty good book. It covers stick, MIG, TIG and gas welding plus gas and plasma cutting. Also some good basic metallurgy and shop theory. Good stuff.

Ellen McGlynn and Caitlin Graboski learn to Arc Weld and cut steel with the Oxy-Acetylene torch. Ellen made an awesome flower pot and E for Ellen, and Caitlin made a beautiful tree.
Poor Polo had to be welded back together and fitted with new number plate and bulb to pass MOT.
But it's passed now so I have another year of uncomfortable and noisy but cheap motoring ahead of me!

Feb 25, 2014: The job: restore a bearing surface on a badly galled shaft. Here it is welded all around to fatten it up again. The real trouble was that 4 in dia, 6 in long slug of steel in the middle: after welding each end it took two hours to cool down enough to turn it smooth.
