I'm also sharing this photo for Week 2. In this photo, I was attempting to capture the motion of a little girl, laying on the floor and pretending to make a snow angel. I used a narrow aperture because I found the wider aperture led to an over-exposed image. I limited the shutter to 10 seconds (vs. 20 or 30 seconds) to also keep too much light from overexposing the image. This setting allowed me to capture a lot of the detail in the objects that weren't moving (e.g., chairs, rug) while still getting somewhat of an outline of the girl.
Annual Science Week is a week long celebration of science held in August each year. Check out the Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery centre's web page and facebook for all of the activities happening in the region and especially what is going on in the centre. Making science FUN!

Remember when we found that Dam Chicken?
She looked awfully cute in the bathtub, the following day...
We didn't really stick with Dam Chicken as her name, most of the time - she became Damsel. It seemed to fit both the "Dam" and the "in distress" part of her rescue.
Except.
She ... isn't.
A she, that is.
We suspected, last week, when 'she' conducted a little "biology lesson" with one of the hens... but ... there are lesbians in nature, so ... maybe not. But "her" comb was getting bigger, and in general Damsel seemed a whole lot bigger, and struttier ...
And then today ... he crowed in response to the rooster down the street.
So our two roosters have the girliest names in the flock: Roxie, and Damsel. I'll try to get a picture of him soon - he's definitely growing, and I think he's going to be quite pretty. He must have been quite young. We just thought it was a hen - but now we know it was a young rooster. At least now we have an idea of how old he is!
A little bit late with my week one painting for various reasons. I signed up late and then worked slowly. Acrylic on canvas sheet, with some used international postage and a bit of a late eighties National Geographic map added for good measure. Oh, and it is a bit overexposed here. February in Vermont makes for less than stellar indoor photography conditions. Had to use the scanner.
To celebrate banned books week, the MCC-Longview Library has set up several displays around campus with books that have, over time, been banned in various libraries.
The theme this week will be to emphasize that you, the reader, should think for yourself when it comes to what materials you should read - or not read.

Cylindrical
I have been a little under the weather this week (and so does the rest of the US, it seems like!) but my flowers lift up my spirit. This one in particular has very strong cylindrical stem and reminds me of peppermint candies!
