Wayne Shorter's The All Seeing Eye and Faust's self-titled album. Both are gifts for a friend though I may keep the Faust album since it's a 2008 repressing.

Wayne Shorter is considered a living legend in jazz. Born in 1933, he did not pick up a musical instrument until he was sixteen when he started playing the clarinet to placate his father. A quick learner, his passion for music grew quickly. After earning a degree in music education from New York University in 1956 and a two year army stint, Shorter turned professional in 1959 with the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra, which also included at the time Joe Zawinul. At the same time he became close friends with John Coltrane and the two would often get together to woodshed and discuss music. In the fall of '59, Wayne made his breakthrough joining Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers with Lee Morgan. In 1964, he joined Miles Davis, pumping new blood into the Miles Davis Quintet of the time with Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams, which is regarded as one of the most influential and the most innovative groups in jazz history. Throughout the sixties, Wayne also recorded an impressive body of work under his own name for Blue Note. His creative muse seemed boundless. Wayne, Miles and Herbie Hancock would again change instrumental music in the late sixties with an open-ended music that would later be called fusion. Wayne and Joe Zawinul, both of whom can draw great drama and beauty from music using color, rhythm and leaping intervals, formed the most creative and innovative of fusion bands, Weather Report, which they co-led until 1985. His latest release is “Beyond the Sound Barrier” and for his first time appearance at Skopje Jazz Festival, Shorter is joined by his all-star band featuring Danilo Perez, John Patitucci and Brian Blade.

The 78th Kaikoura Three Day Trial was held on the traditional date in June, now named King’s Birthday Weekend. 76 solo entrants and 7 sidecars tackled the sections at a different property each day.

The first day was at Birches Road, Oaro, in fine weather with no frost. 3 laps of 12 sections, with no deep mud this year, and just a couple of sections in my grade that I couldn’t clean. Day 2 was held at Dairy Flat off the Inland Kaikoura Road, with fine weather and again no frost. A longer loop today with 4 laps of 10 sections. Only one tricky section in my grade, so points were low.

Sunday night saw us congregate at the Whaler Hotel for a meal and presentation to David Chambers who was riding at his 50th Kaikoura event. A great achievement and no doubt he will notch up a few more.

Overnight some periods of heavy rain could be heard on the roof of our accommodation, however this reduced to just some occasional light rain showers once we got to the venue. Half a dozen sections in the creek, with 3 laps of 12 sections in total. Some higher scores on this last day, but easier sections in our grade this year compared to previous.

Then to prize giving before disbursing for home. The event is supported by riders throughout New Zealand with a large number travelling from the North Island as well as regular competitors from across the full length of the South Island. A notable point is the number of families taking part with two and even three generations competing at the event. The large field of 10 Junior riders completed the same sections and loops as senior riders on all days. Seeing this number of Juniors completing the weekend, and their riding skills is great for the future of the sport.

The placings for each class are on the Pioneer Website. Stand out rides were Finn Pearce riding the red line and looking great on the bike. Each time I see him his riding has improved and he must surely be a future champion. A great ride also by Stuart Lawton on a 70’s Twin Shock TY taking first in Twin Shock, but also first in Intermediate. The Sidecar classes also saw some new pairings and new outfits this year. Stand out ride must be John Lawton who, with Conner Newton in the chair both had large smiles all weekend.

Wayne Williams was a former resident of Birmingham Alabama who moved to Detroit to get a better job in housing construction.

Although Wayne is currently without a job or home, when I met up with him, he was on his way to collect two large turkeys and take them to families that he knew would need them more than himself.

Capitol Reef National Park is a United States National Park, in south-central Utah. It is 100 miles (160 km) long but fairly narrow. The park, established in 1971, preserves 241,904 acres (978.95 km2; 377.98 sq mi) and is open all year, although May through September are the most popular months.

Called "Wayne Wonderland" in the 1920s by local boosters Ephraim P. Pectol and Joseph S. Hickman, Capitol Reef National Park protects colorful canyons, ridges, buttes, and monoliths. About 75 mi (121 km) of the long up-thrust called the Waterpocket Fold, a rugged spine extending from Thousand Lake Mountain to Lake Powell, is preserved within the park. "Capitol Reef" is the name of an especially rugged and spectacular segment of the Waterpocket Fold near the Fremont River. The area was named for a line of white domes and cliffs of Navajo Sandstone, each of which looks somewhat like the United States Capitol building, that run from the Fremont River to Pleasant Creek on the Waterpocket Fold. The local word reef referred to any rocky barrier to travel. Easy road access came with the construction in 1962 of State Route 24 through the Fremont River Canyon.

Capitol Reef encompasses the Waterpocket Fold, a warp in the earth's crust that is 65 million years old. It is the largest exposed monocline in North America. In this fold, newer and older layers of earth folded over each other in an S-shape. This warp, probably caused by the same colliding continental plates that created the Rocky Mountains, has weathered and eroded over millennia to expose layers of rock and fossils. The park is filled with brilliantly colored sandstone cliffs, gleaming white domes, and contrasting layers of stone and earth.

The park is filled with canyons, cliffs, towers, domes, and arches. The Fremont River has cut canyons through parts of the Waterpocket Fold, but most of the park is arid desert country. A scenic drive shows park visitors some of the highlights, but it runs only a few miles from the main highway. Hundreds of miles of trails and unpaved roads lead the more adventurous into the equally scenic backcountry.

Bruce Wayne, from the side. The clothes rack is made out of Green Stuff and a piece of a paper clip for stiffness. The cowl, cape, and boots came from an extra Batman figure from the Batman: Alpha set. I had to shave the shoulders down and heat the cape to bend it around the clothes rack.

We slept very late on Saturday since we had been up all night traveling to Vegas. About 2 PM, my luggage arrived. Praise God! Jim, Carl, and I ate a delicious meal at a Mexican restaurant (not on the strip). Then Carl and I took the shuttle bus from the Wyndham Grand Desert Resort to Harrah's for a Wayne Newton Concert and some "walking through casinos" before and after. We rode the monorail for the first time ever.

ever since i first heard wayne shorter's unique sound on steely dan's aja, i was totally captivated. he has a totally unique style, which i was really able to get into by listening to weather report (although his older, more straight-ahead tracks are fantastic too.. i still prefer that zawinul / shorter / pastorius lineup)
