The surf was pretty rough yesterday. No-one was surfing or swimming at Lighthouse Beach in Ballina. They looked pretty spectacular from the wall but their true nature and beauty was hard to capture. The water colour was wonderful!
I went down to Camden Head today and walked out to the point. Blustery conditions like yesterday which really smashed the waves into the cliffs. A mother and calf right whale took a rest in the bay behind before heading around this point and down south. The sea spray on the lens adds to the atmospherics, I hope! Wind very strong, difficult to stand against it.

Very strong winds in Whitehaven harbour stripping the tops off the waves on the incoming tide and creating a continual spray mist. And this despite the shelter from the west pier wall and lighthouse and about 5 hours before high tide.
Waves in Nerja on Christmas Eve. The torrential rain had stopped, and the sun was coming through. The water was brown from all the debris that the overflowing rivers had brought down.

During the parade a local drove around waving the national flag from the top of his car.
The Republic of Užupis - Independence Day
The Republic of Užupis (also known as the Bohemian Republic) is located to the east of Vilnius's historical (and UNESCO protected) old town. It was a dangerous ghetto in the occupation times but was given a 'face lift' by the hippy movement in the 80's. It is now an artisans paradise and is full of trendy cafe's, workshops and galleries.
On April fools day 1997 the district declared itself to be an independent republic, complete with a president, army (of around 12 personnel), and a constitution (viewable in this album). Every year the Republic celebrates its independence with a parade, concert and the famous 'boarder control' where you can get your passport stamped with the national visa.

These were all taken on the 1st of April 2011 with a Nikon D3000 (with either the 18-55 or 55-200 lens). They were then touched up with GIMP for artistic effect.

Storms on Christmas Eve 2013 with waves crashing over the West Pier of Whitehaven harbour shortly before dark near high tide.
As we traveled in our bus, the kids would stop what they were doing to wave at us. Actually, anyone who we waved to, would do the same. India is full of friendly people!
A stormy Atlantic Ocean crashing in on the natural lava pools in Porto Moniz, making swimming there impossible that day. I found it fabulous to just watch the waves rolling in, breaking on the rocks, creating huge amounts of spray and generally making a lot of noise.
There's really not much more to do in Porto Moniz anyway...
