Robert Pickton's trial has spotlighted violence against women, but society continues to fail vulnerable women, said speakers at yesterday's Valentine's Day rally.
Led by native drummers, more than 1,000 people marched through drenching rain in the Downtown Eastside. Native elders stopped in filthy, needle-strewn streets and alleys to leave roses where women were murdered or disappeared.
"Not much has changed since I left 10 years ago," said Maggy Gisle, who spent 16 years as "Crazy Jackie" on the Downtown Eastside. "Women are still being brutalized."
Pickton is charged with killing 26 women from the Downtown Eastside, and 39 more are missing.
Marginalized women are seen as "non-human," said Pauline Johnson, who lost three family members to the neighbourhood's violence.
"A tree falls in Stanley Park, and everybody runs, everybody helps," Johnson said. "A woman gets murdered in the Downtown Eastside, and everybody turns their backs."
Only six drug-detox beds are available for women in the Downtown Eastside, and follow-up programs to keep women off drugs are non-existent, said Elaine Allan, a Salvation Army manager who is looking for funding for 12 more beds.
The rally included a stop at the Main Street police station. Police have been widely criticized for responding slowly after women began to vanish.
"They did not hear our voice," said C.J. Julian, 38, who started working as a prostitute at age 12 and continued for 22 years. "They called me a junkie, a transient hooker."
Unsolved killings of 11 women and disappearances of eight more in northern B.C. have also received an inadequate response from police, said Gladys Radek, whose niece, Tamara Chipman, 22, disappeared in 2005 from B.C.'s notorious Highway 16.

Im rather depressed and as so, I tend to reflect on my past relationships. So many times I've ripped my heart out of chest to prove myself to her, but they just give it back, if theyre nice. Most times I end up picking my heart off the ground and trying to fit it back in place.

Although the reasons are somewhat uncertain, habitat loss (particularly wet woods and riparian areas) is considered the most likely cause.

An infant sleeps in his mother's arm as she begs on the street in Varanasi, India. However, it's important to note that it's entirely possible in this case that the beggar may not have actually been the mother of this child and was just holding the child to appear more vulnerable. This is not uncommon in Varanasi...unfortunately.

This picture illustrates what you think you know about tigers. However, tigers live in Asia and zebras live in Africa. So now we see what else is true. When it dawns on you that you don’t know how everything fits together, you have an opportunity to learn something new. Being vulnerable that way opens you up to new ways of perceiving.

Dec 10: Australia won the #FossiloftheDay award today, their 4th Fossil award of this COP, for getting 0/100 in the climate policy assesment of the latest released edition of a Germanwatch report, as well as for advocating use of Kyoto carryover credits here at COP25, all the while one of the major cities - Sydney - is surrounded by bushfires with choking smoke for the last two weeks, black water on blackened beaches. Bondi Beach is just not the same. We had a young climate striker Daisy accept the award for Australia.
We also had a well deserved #RayofTheDay to the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) which was accepted by Enele Sopoaga, a diplomat and former Prime Minister of Tuvalu.

Adapted to petitpoint from a painting by P.D Breeding Black. 20" by 28". 18 mesh canvas, This is 324 tiny stitches per square inch, all worked by hand with one strand of Persian wool. I painted and stitched this piece in 1995. Back when my eyes could see much better!!! Why am I putting up pics now? Because I want to do Evies portrait in petitpoint.
Curious piece of graffiti on an old wall near the Cumberland Basin that reads "His charmed foot on the ball..But then his heel, his heel, his heel". A bit of research has uncovered that this is taken from a poem by poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy called "Ulysses" in which the legendary figure of Greek Mythology with the famously vulnerable heel is likened to modern footballing hero David Beckham whose ankle injury ruled him out of the recent World Cup tournament. Not sure why this has been added to this particular wall but it's a poem worth checking out.

The vulnerability assessments were conducted using a method developed by the World Agroforestry Centre, called Capacity Strengthening Approach to Vulnerability Assessment (CaSAVA). Compared to other vulnerability assessments that usually focus on risks caused by climate change, CaSAVA combines risks of biophysical changes (including climate change) with socio-economic and policy factors, which can lower productivity and profits, along with agroforestry practices and forestry.
